  2. The BEST way to make it big in the music industry on Online Marketing for an Indie Band? · · Score: 1

...is to cop what the flaming lips (and countless other bands) did. Become a one-hit wonder with a crappy, catchy, easily accessible hit -- then turn into the "next radiohead" with your next album. Once you have your foot in the door, the great reviews of your amazing album will pour in (and most everyone will forget about your crappy single way back when) and you'll be set for life.

I highly recommend watching Quake Done Quicker. These guys beat Quake 1 in 12 minutes.. and there are plenty of trick moves to keep the audience entertained... definitely not boring.

  5. SGL = excellent product, excellent install method on Sorcerer Review, and News of Impending Doom · · Score: 5, Interesting

It would really be a shame if SGL stopped getting support. I switched from Mandrake a month ago and I'm more than satisfied with the results. Yes, the install is more difficult and time consuming, but it was worth it for the experience I got out of it. I now have an intricate knowledge about how the inner details of linux works.

I also believe that their method of installing applications is better than any binary install system out there (apt-get/rpm). Although it may take a bit longer to compile things, they're installed *right* and are compiled specific for your architecture. All dependencies are automagically downloaded, compiled, and installed without any user interaction (although you can interact if you want).

No other distro provides more control, flexibility, or ease of use better than sorcery. I hope it doesn't go away.

why is there so much debate/commentary about binary distros nowadays? I've been using sorcery for 3 weeks, and I've never been more satisfied. I'm willing to wait an hour for a piece of software to be optimized for *my* particular hardware configuration, rather than waiting 20 minutes for downloading a pre-compiled binary. cast apt-get, anyone?

  8. WINE, anyone? on Michael Robertson Interview about Lindows · · Score: 2, Insightful
I still can't believe that these guys can race ahead of the WINE developers when it comes to running windows apps in linux. It seems to me (and this has been posted before) that they're probably using some sort of wine-related or vmware-related tool to get the job done. It also makes me think of these points:

for $100, I could get MS windows and run it natively.

for FREE, I could download mandrake linux and run windows apps through wine or VMware.

What does lindows have to offer that the above don't? NOTHING.

so you're telling me that most game reviews are lies? WTF? If a developer sends a product to be reviewed and that product SUCKS, then it deserves a review stating it SUCKS. Seriously.. I don't think the technical problems should be mentioned (it's not really a review of the game), just the gameplay itself. And what about reviews that PC Gamer occasionally does? They always review a game that gets a score of 15%. These reviews usually rip apart the game so badly it's FUNNY. I can remember one game that had a list of 'cons' a mile long and the 'pros' section said "it came in a nice glossy box." Does PC Gamer get calls from developers whose feelings are hurt because they released a shitty game?

Attempting to upgrade using RPM is a cause of migranes. Although I'm ususally running Mandrake 7.2, it angers me when I have to download 500 rpms to make one app/upgrade work. Not only is it an inconvenience for desktop users, but it can sometimes be critical for sysadmins trying to get a service (or whatever) up and running. This is one spot where windows does better hands down. Run setup.exe and everything works? Wow. Run rpm -Uvh and lib.so.? is needed by somedealie.3.x? wtf? I think this is a main reason linux is not as popular as it has the potential to be.

  13. Same woes @ Drexel University on Getting The Most Out Of Co-Op Programs? · · Score: 1

I've had nearly the same exact experience at my last co-op provided by Drexel University. The want ad billed the job as 'PC Tech Specialist' that promised cutting-edge work in many computer related diciplines but the real job mainly consisted of moving boxes in the basement, upgrading Pentium 75s to meet the minimum requirement for their Office 2000 rollout (which we had to perform on all 700 machines), and nothing (going to work and browsing the web for 2 weeks with nothing to do). So far, my experience being a co-op is nothing but crap. We're used for cheap labor or labor that no one else wants to do. We're not treated like regular employees, but more like kids. Experiences like these make co-op seem like a benefit for the university and the employer, not the student.

  16. we're already there... if we choose to be on The End Of Books As We Know Them? · · Score: 2

I recently wandered into a channel called #bookwarez on IRC. Instead of going to Barnes n' Noble to *buy* books the way you're supposed to, you can get them for free in PDF or HTML format. Most of the books I've seen available are tech-related (Teach yourself [language/app/cert] in 21 days), but I've also seen many fiction titles as well. This form of warez is new to me, but the fact that it's out there is kinda interesting. Most of the books I've seen are zipped up pretty good and I'd say 1000 pages = 2 megs. Makes you wonder what *won't* be available for free if you search hard enough. This brings up many ethical issues, and I don't advocate or reccommend that you go out and do this, but it is something to think about.

How many others aren't paying a dime for flashcom's service? Is it any wonder they went bankrupt?
