The big-name recording industry completely abuses and sanitizes every track with endless re-takes, splices, effects, equalization, compression, etc., etc.,

Welcome to the entertainment industry. I wouldn't say they necessarily *abuse* the vocal tracks by adding effects, but rather they're adding pizzazz to what would otherwise be a kareoke rendition performed by you, me, or some other joe.

Performers only want to show a few set of polished characteristics that creates an illusion that they are larger than life. Any tool that would help (mainstream) artists achieve this goal will obviously be put to good use. Not that I agree with the practice, but this has been going on ever since the dawn of time. Entertainers entertain simply by showing a small set of previously rehearsed and trained qualities, and that's how entertainment (mostly) works.

I don't think being tired is an extreme condition.. and if anything, it's used too much as an excuse *not* to exercise. Being *dog* tired, maybe, but I guess I should have re-phrased what I meant to say. There is a line between being lazy tired and being like... insomniac tired. If you have the latter you might not benefit at all. Being lazy is just being lazy, and that's not helping anything, now is it?

Also, I think going for a light swim is an excellent hangover cure. That and some eggs.

You have to make time for exercise, even if you think you have no time. Personally, I've lost 30lbs and gained a lot of muscle by joining a gym and eating healthy (amazingly, after a while you don't even miss junk food!).

The main thing is to stick with it. Even if you're dog tired, hung over, etc.. it's imperitave to still go. Eventually it becomes part of your regular routine, and you feel quite awful if you *don't* work out.

Once I get this, I can then rip the CD and copy it to my ipod.

  9. Re:Is it just me on Flash Applications That Can Be Used Online and Off · · Score: 1

Or does anyone else think Flash should die a quick and painful death? I have never seen Flash used in an application that wouldn't be more effective using javascript or simple HTML.

First off, I'd mod you as a troll if I had the points. Do your research before you bash. Flash alone is simply for glitz and glamour.. which may be appropriate as long as it doesn't go over the top and affect the usability of a site.

Developers (like myself) use Director to create web-based applications. A combination of director and perl (for example) can provide a prettier and much more intuitive interface, and it also allows the author to create a custom look and feel. IMHO, using Director + the Flash Communication Server is quickly becoming a viable alternative to java and javascript for web-based applications. The lingo scripting language isn't too hard to wrap your head around, and it's pretty powerful.

You do have a point, however. There are times where excessive flash gets in the way of productivity (long, stupid intros, wait times, etc), but the same is true for excessive use of *any* technology.

  11. Re:DMCA compliance? on New Developments in Music Technology · · Score: 1

Please point out in the story where it says something about including DSP chips in guitars.

This story is (partly) about how amp manufacturers are including microchips that will emulate how a certain amp *sounds*. IANAL, but I don't think there's a DMCA issue about an amp manufacturer's *interpretation* of how an amp is supposed to sound, is there?

That kind of begs the question - Can manufacturers somehow copyright the characteristics and artifacts of their amp sound?

  12. some other interesting software DSP amps.. on New Developments in Music Technology · · Score: 5, Informative

Amplitube is quite awesome at emulating some of the best amps out there. I've started using this as an alternative to mic'ing my triple rectifier at my studio, simply because the amount of control you get is so much greater (IE changing the amp after the guitar was recorded)

Also, Sonic Foundry's Acoustic Mirror does a great job of mimicking any environment, even the charicteristics of a piece of equipment (vintage mic or amp).

I believe both of these products have demo versions you can try out, and they are both directx plugins (so use with Sound Forge or some other audio editing app).

The thing about it is, I totally expected a post like this. Sure, mod me down as a troll, but this is what happens when the slashdot crowd gets whiff of a new standard in the PC market. Below I have exampled this effect of "reverse luddite-ism".

Dell shipping with no more floppy discs? Oh no! whatever will we do? How about a bootable cd? Seriously. I haven't used my floppy in ages. They're unreliable, slow, and have a tendency to destroy an important term paper that's on it. Good riddance.

Whaaaaaaat?!! Office XP is going to FORCE me to register?!! Why I never! Yes, they ask you what country you live in. If you're not pirating your copy of Office, this ain't no big deal.

Poo-poo to this EFI. I'll never use it! I need diagnostic info! I like text! Besides, Microsoft will hijack it somehow! Like I said before, it won't become a standard unless you CAN use it for diagnostic information. AND, since we're talking about a new standard here, maybe it will cure a lot of the problems that you might need BIOS to debug!

PS - half of my post was funny. The other half is true. Mod accordingly.

However, I don't think her example is valid on a multi-platinum level. We get enough exposure to bigger bands through mtv and radio where we already know if we're gonna buy their shirt and concert tickets.

Parts that are wickedly bad for the environment will cost more to recycle than others. Some parts of computer monitors contain really horrible stuff (read: lead, cadmium, mercury) that should never be thrown in a landfill.
