You can already do that type of stuff with Metastream, and it is based on wavelets, too. They hired a guy straight from MIT to do their compression algorithms - and it was worth it. I remember that a model of a safe that was 2 megabytes in DXF was compressed down to 15 KB, with hardly any loss in quality. Try it out...
The Cartoon Network is spinning of a channel called "Boomerang". The idea is to take all of the old content (ie. Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, etc...) and put them on the separate channel so Cartoon Network can focus more on new content, both in-house and licensed.
So, it's not that they are spinning off a Toonami channel, but they are spinning off the old stuff and making the main network mostly Toonami.
Help bring more animation to DVD. You can start by signing a petition to bring Batman the Animated Series to DVD here.
I'm sure that many of us would like to see other animated series be published on DVD. Personally, I'd like to see The X-Men, Dexter's Lab, The PowerPuff Girls, The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest, Voltron,.... the list goes on and on.
Damn, I really hope they *don't* come out with those on DVD, otherwise I'm not going to have much money left from my pay check....
Well, my friends and I at college were talking about building one of these things around 5 months ago. We never executed on it. Now, you've got this thing, Diamond's making one, and Transmeta is showcasing them..
Oh well. I was also talking about this with a friend of mine at work. He was worried that these things would go the way of the minicomputer. Laptops would become cheaper and more powerful, while PDAs would get a little bit larger and more powerful (probably cost a bit more too), and the product would be squeezed out of the market. While these devices probably have selling potential now, they most likely won't in 2 years' time. It's not something to create a successful startup around (at least that's not my opinion anymore).
There's a company that already has one of these things called ePods. Theirs is $200 plus a 36 month dialup Internet plan. They don't seem to be doing *too* well... But hey, we'll see..
Considering that the hardcore fan will never consider American animation to be of anime caliber, there are a few animated series I would *love* to see on DVD here in the states.
The Simpsons has been announced to be released like the X-Files - by Season - in February, 2001.
Beyond the Simpsons, however, there are a number of series I would want to see. Among them are Batman The Animated Series, The X-Men (I bet I could get many more signatures on a petition after that movie:), and The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest.
I currently have a petition to get Batman The Animated Series published on DVD here . Please do go sign it:) I'd be more than happy to start petitions for the others as well if people are interested...
Instead of embedded links, just place a small colored area to the left or right of the original message saying "Here are some links to products mentioned in this post. Click for great deals!!"
I certainly think this is just as effective, and keeps the original poster's head from exploding over the issue.
I'm a collector of video game music. I have music of everything from the original Zelda game music to the newest Parasite Eve and Chrono Cross soundtracks.
There is some great stuff, and you can get hooked on the music for days. I strongly suggest that anynoe who's interested in finding out more about video game soundtracks purchase the Chrono Cross Soundtrack ($35 for 3 discs and a poster of the chick in the game - sweet:) or even Chrono Trigger ($30 for 2 discs). Also, look to Soundtrack Central for reviews and track listings.
My first thought is that the Traffic Waves site has been posted to Slashdot before. After an initial search, I couldn't find it. Anyone else want to try?
My second thought is this: My first computer was an IBM PS/2. Wow did that thing kick ass - 386 SX @ 25 MHz, 2 MB RAM (I upgraded to 10 YEAH!), 130 Meg HD, and a 12" monitor that you'd swear was frying your brain.
One of the first things I learned how to do was start the example BASIC games that came with that thing - SNAKE being one of them. Ahh, snake. It ruled yesterday's computers, and it rules today's cell phones.
Another thing, that computer came with the most documentation I've seen for any personal system. It came with the ENTIRE IBM DOS manual! It had every utility's switch, option, and description right there! If only modern computers came with such things. But then again, not much you could do in the way of a manual for a GUI driven system.
Anime *has* been moving to DVD. Actually, it's been moving to DVD much quicker than live action has. Animation may just be easier to print to the format or something. In any case, AnimeOnDVD.Com has something like a couple hundred DVDs reviewed, and more are coming every week.
My DVD collection is almost exclusively anime DVDs. I really should get some live action stuff...
Hey Slashdot, I've got a really long-ass essay that I think everyone should read, just to make sure that the future can be a utopia shaped by me and my wonderful views on computing. Won't you please post a link to my site?
[Settle down people, there are probably some good points, but the thing is six pages long! Might as well send some mail bombs to people and then threaten to send more if the NYTimes doesn't publish it...]
Did anyone else realise that this new media is about the size of a Dreamcast GD-ROM (which is 1.2GB)? Perfect for making those pirated copies of DC games on one disc.
Dreamcast Pirated Games are already available. And yes, most fit on one CD-R. Soul Calibur, probably the most media heavy game available on the Dreamcast, fits on one CD (and has been released). If that game can, most likely almost any except ones using a lot of FMV will do so as well...
Here's what you do:
- Go to http://www.dcisos.com and download the boot loader. - Burn the boot loader. - Download your pirated games (heck, I'm not telling you where...) - Burn those to a CD.
Pop the boot loader into your Dreamcast. Wait for it to boot. Then pop in your pirated game. And voila... it's the Playstation all over again.
How'd they do this? I believe they found that using the Dreamcast debugging tool which was posted on Slashdot a while ago, they found they could copy the program data used on the GD-ROM for the actual game. Then, they just pulled it off sequentially and saved it to an image file (not sure how exactly they do that - perhaps software of their own?).
I don't know how they pulled off the boot loader either - but seeing as WinCE boots on the thing, I suppose it was a matter of time for that to happen.
I love the kinds of possibilities this opens up - home grown Dreamcast games, anyone? Someone basically has to figure out the API used for rendering, loading data, etc and you've got yourself a console development platform. Only problem is you'll have to burn a CD each time you make a change to the game:P
Slashdot, while many of its readers are into anime, probably isn't the best place to get news about anime DVDs. I find the following two sites most helpful in documenting daily developments in Anime, Animation and DVD. They also have reviews of almost all the anime that's been published on DVD as well...
Man, Corel had to spend all that money on MetaCreations' products, and now they're going to lay off 320 people and possibly not continue operations past the year-end??
What the hell? I really thought Corel would have more sense than that. I'm more worried about MetaCreations' software - I used to work for MetaCreations. It really saddens me to see such innovative products (not 'Microsoft innovative' - really innovative, both in functionality and user interface) just go down the drain. Corel had better get their act together, or sell those products to a more competent company.
I'm tired of dealing with phone companies. They're one of the few commercial (non government) entities who really could care less about their customers
... Which would mean that the companies do care about their customers.
Get it right people! It's "couldn't care less", otherwise there is the implication that they do care...

Rock on.
The proper way to say the "Image" in their name isn't like how you'd say "image file". It's "Imahj"
You realize that sound travels faster underwater than it does in the air. So which speed of sound is it?

Centuries turn between '99 and '00. Millenia turn between '00 and '01.
Now, there *is* a reason for such a thing as Linux software piracy.

Another such start-up aiming to take away your processor cycles is Centrata.
