Only thing I can think of is cooling problems. They all seem to have fans in them, so they must have massive heatsinks inside as well. Remember the computer burners for blue-ray are the same size as dvd and cd burners but the pc burners don't have decoding hardware, output, or power supplies to worry about.
I seriously doubt that Costco tv offers 1080p INPUT. If I remember correctly there is only one tv out now (HP) that offers 1080p input over hdmi. My samsung allows it over vga. The HDMI spec allows 1080p, but no one (expect already mentioned HP) have it setup to accept it.
"'Yes, the very same federal government that is cutting back on college loans and food stamps will soon be issuing TV vouchers' - $1.5 billion to help U.S. households buy new digital TV equipment."
The same student loans that kids use to buy cars, beer, and drugs instead of using for their education. The same food stamps that families use to buy things their kids don't need instead of good food to live on. $1.5 billion is a drop in the bucket compared to other things.
Would be nice if a story could be posted without the editorial in the actual story post. Leave that crap for the comments.
Gee, since when does having small data files with basically IP addresses in them mean "offer warez over HTTP"?
None of this stuff was stored by him. He was basically a search engine, just like google. Google provides links just like he did so why wasn't all of googles servers and pc's confiscated?
DRM is not about increasing sales, its about getting studios to sign on and release movies in your format. This has nothing to do with the consumer and everything to do with making the studios happy. No studios no movies, no movies no sales.
This might not be the case still. They ARE looking at changing this stance since so many folks will be left out and won't buy the devices because they don't have hdmi on their tvs.
Nothing is set until the devices start hitting the stores, until then there is still hope.
I have a new samsung HLR6168. It only accepts 1080p over the vga input which for me is fine. If I ever do decide to take advantage of it its there. Currently (and at least as far into the future as I can see) there will be NO 1080p content. HDDVD and blueray are not initially (or at all) going to output 1080p. No broadcasters are even thinking about it. Maybe 10 years from now we'll see it but by then I'll probably be shopping for a new tv again.
Next year samsung models will support 1080p input via hdmi if you want to wait till the summer.
I do occassionally see rainbows at home even though I didn't see them when viewing in store, but it is so extremely rare that it never bothers me. The picture is extremely sharp and bright and I have never seen the diamond pattern produced from the wobulation.
I would love to see a poll asking how many people are really effected by those IE "holes".
I would bet its such a small percentage that it is laughable. Remember, the security companies get money and PR by exposing as many holes in software as they can find. In all the lifespan of using windows and its various versions and IE I have NEVER encountered any site with any of the security problems that the "experts" jump up and down about.
Yes they should be fixed, but they should also not be treating this stuff like its the end of life as we know it.
When he called on day 2 and they said it wasn't in stock why didn't he just cancel his order instead of threatening the "company"? I mean really what was the point of threatening the company with writing a story about their (at the moment it wasn't) bad service over shipping of a camera that they did or didn't have in stock?
Majority of the sites do NOT have real time stock information that updates after every order placed. This guy brought all this on himself. None of this would have happened if he had just cancelled the order after calling the 2nd day and being told it was out of stock.
Except the games are still all the same. Madden is still the same as madden from last year, just sharper less aliased graphics. Platformers are still the same jump and run and shoot. FPS are all the same find the key, kill some guys and move on. Everything is exactly the same as before. Only difference is less jaggies. 720p is about all you are going to get out of this generation. You'll be lucky if a game comes out in 1080i. Meanwhile I can do those ultra high resolutions on the same games on my pc (even connected to my hdtv if I want to). So why spend 500-600 on a console on release day to play games that are nothing but poorly compiled tech demos?
Obviously you have issues. Not my problem, not slashdot's problem either. Linux is NOT easy to use. Its not easy to setup, its not easy to install. Its easier than it used to be by far, but its not as simple as put the cd in and hit next a few times. Enter your time zone, hit next a few more times.
You have a lot of built up anger over something that is just an OS. I mean really to hate someone based upon what OS they prefer to use and because they speak nothing but truth about another OS?
You have a lot to look forward in life. I predict you'll die a relatively young age from a heart problem brought on by stress. On your tombstone it'll say you died because you were a dick. The best part will be that just like linux, no one will care.
You answered your own questions. The reason IS that they don't care. Why don't they care? Because there are no users. No users means no money. No money means no games. Why are there no users? Because linux as a whole is NOT ready for prime time. Its not easy to setup and use, it doesn't play well with a lot of hardware, and yes, it doesn't have a huge microsoft-like company behind it to push it on everyone.
Try direct X. The majority of games are written using it. Is there a linux version? No, they all have to use opengl. Is that the distros fault? Not really but then at the same time maybe it is. The game makers aren't going to make something from scratch just so the small minority can play their games. It costs too much money. The big guys can have 2 different rendering libraries because they have the cash to do so. But for most of them its not worth the trouble. The games you mentioned exist in the linux world as a favor, do you really think those companies make any money off them to make a difference?
Like I said before it will NEVER happen. You either live with it, dual boot, or bitch and moan on the internet about it. I think we have all figured out which way you are going.
Linux will never be mainstream. It will forever reside in the niche corner like OSX and the server rooms of companies.
Yes, game developers do not support linux but at the same time the linux distros do not make it easy for game developers to support linux. The tools are NOT there, the numbers are NOT there, the ease of use is NOT there.
"Get an extra cable box, dedicate it to your PVR. You're going to be paying just as much (more) of an extra fee to get a smart card for this Microsoft box, as you would for an extra digital cable box from your provider."
Why when the cable boxes that come from the cable company have 2 tuners built in. Also a cable card costs half as much as a cable box rental does. I'm not saying MS's solution is better just that the pc solution isn't up to par yet.
Cause what you suggested is the equivelent of plugging the cable box into a vcr. Change the channel on the cable box while its recording and you change what you are recording. One cable out of the wall into one input on a device is the better solution. But not if a user has to jump through hoops over what they can and cannot watch/record.
You can't which is why I posted my question. Why don't they exist yet and why won't it be until a year from now before a solution exists for MS media center? It can't be a technical reason that type of PCI card didn't come out with the first run of cable cards, so it is either an economic reason or a legal reason.
Cable cards already exist now. You can walk down to your local cable provider and pick one up. So whats the difference between sliding a cable card into a tv and sliding a cable card into a pci tv tuner with an empty cable card slot? What is the delay in making this happen sooner?
I'm feeling the same as you and I'm sure there are millions others with the same feelings. Tired of sequel after sequel that is basically the same exact games. All they do is up the resolutions and polygon counts, but the game is the same. It feels like double dipping on dvd releases. Put out version one, then special edition, then ultimate edition. I stopped that years ago and am not really interested in any of the new consoles.
Let me see if I understand this. The point of the program is to get laptops to poor children in basically 3rd world countries cheaply. So they are going to install a hard to use OS on a $100 laptop for kids that probably have never seen or used a computer before instead of letting apple install their easy to use OS when there is no price difference?
Doesn't sound like they are trying to do whats best for the children here at all. The program is going to fail and be a laughing stock.
Uhhh...I'd say heart disease and breast cancer are human kinds biggest threats. There are ways to control and prevent the spread of HIV, but for many people heart disease and cancer just happen. No matter how well they take care of themselves.
Only thing I can think of is cooling problems. They all seem to have fans in them, so they must have massive heatsinks inside as well. Digital does not mean hdtv. Digital just means digital.

You realize that Sony Computer Entertainment is completely different from Sony Music. Yes they share the Sony name but that's about it.

Don't know about you but I don't even see the ads on places like slashdot unless they are disguised as news reports.

The clones were great for the customer though. The clone makers made faster and cheaper pcs than apple could at the time.
