If I had mod points I would mod you up.
My phone contract expires in about 8 weeks. With a contract renewal I will get a new phone. I have a bunch of criteria that I have around what I need but being 1mm thinner than the previous model isn't on my list. With Apple having issues with bending phones with the last release I would be tempted to think that unless they make the whole phone bendable a thinner phone will simply mean a fragile phone.
Removing the audio jack is design wank. A bunch of "creative types" has decided that they want a thinner, sleeker phone and that it would be cool not to have the audio jack. Marketing thinks it's great because they get to sell lots of Beats by Dr Dre headphones at vastly inflated prices. Customer think it's a con because they have wired headsets and are still smarting from having to replace their expensive Bose speakers because of the Lighting Connector. Change for the sake of change.

It's not central Australia that's the issue. Have a look at some of the images from the Black Saturday fires in Victoria, Australia in 2009. 1.1 million acres burned and 173 people died. Victoria is Australia's most densley-populated state. Melbourne's temperature reached over 46C, (115 F).
If you have a look here you will see the cloud of smoke from the fires, the land mass on the right of the picture is New Zealand, and the cloud is covering most of the South Island. Entire towns were virtually destroyed by the fires. So the issue isn't just central Australia, it's the populated areas.

Yep, I had Kanga Bangas for dinner last night. Not as succulent (fatty) as regular sausages and with a stronger flavour but not bad all the same. Kangaroo burgers rock, and Kangaroo steak is great when done quite rare, but overcook it and it goes tougher than a pair of Chuck Norris's boots.
Kangaroo meat is also much better for you and the environment than beef. Kangaroos need to be culled in many parts of Australia due to rising population levels (there are considerably more kangaroos in Australia now than before white settlement, due to agriculture), the meat is very low in fat, and kangaroos fart far less than cows, so we don't get the methane output that cows produce. If you can get kangaroo meat, try it.

They are facing the very real reality that Windows 8 will flop. Tens of thousands of PC's are being replaced with ipads both at home, and in the enterprise. This trend is likely to explode in 2012, when a large enough portion of the non developer population will be using them to matter. Sure, they're doing extremely well in video games, but their own mobile efforts haven't panned out, and probably won't. If Microsoft loses the Enterprise to Apple, they will be effectively marginalized in their core business. So what do you expect them to do? Those that can't make an honest living litigate. If the entertainment industry has taught us nothing, it's that.

Apple isn't going to win the enterprise space any time soon. Sure they will get companies who buy iToys for their employees, but let's face it, iPads are an unmanageable mess for an IT organisation. How do you effectively manage the data held on them, and the security on them? If big organisations can't control laptops, how do you think they will control iPads?
I know of a lot of large organisations who would like to use tablets but won't go near Apple because they don't understand corporates. Sure they're shiny and employees want them ("we'll be more productive" hehehe now get me Angry Birds) but controlling what is on them and who gets access to it is a nightmare. Even Apple know that this isn't even in their sights. Nobody who actually uses a PC for more than just email and presentations will use a tablet for core business use. You need to add a keyboard and a mouse and a bigger screen if you use it for more than a few hours, but wait, that's now a very expensive and underspecced laptop. Just wait for all the OH&S claims when people start complaining of eye strain or issues with handling the bloody thing all the time.

I don't agree with Microsoft suing over obvious and broad patents, but trying to say that Windows 8 will flop because Apple brought out a tablet is facile. Apple are even more litigous than Microsoft. In fact, one thing that constantly amuses me is the fact that all the reasons why Apple fanbois give to hate Microsoft, Apple are actually worse at (EULAs, screwing over competitors, screwing over customers, anti-competitive, vendor lock-in, etc).

If you like historical romps the whole "Flashman" series by George MacDonald Fraser are excellent, and they even include one that centres on the events of Harpers Ferry. The concept is that Flashman (the bully from "Tom Brown's School Days") is expanded on and his life after being expelled is explained. In his memoirs he describes how he became a hero and celebrated soldier all the while he was a scoundrel, coward and cad. Excellent series of books. Apparently when it was first published, at least one reviewer thought it was a real memoir.

Terry Pratchett, Robert Rankin, Jasper Fforde are all great, quite British but I'm sure an American wouldn't be too put off by anything in there.

The only way it can be undone, though, is by overturning the legislation that caused the problem. Then shipping costs will be unappealing and jobs will come back home. Until then, don't hate companies for surviving and trying to give you the lowest-priced product possible despite government manipulation.

Care to tell us what "government manipulation" of the economy there was? The reason jobs went overseas was that companies can make more profit if they have a lower cost base.
Henry Ford had a very smart aphorism - There is one rule for industrialists and that is: make the best quality of goods possible at the lowest cost possible, paying the highest wages possible.
What has happened in the past decade is that companies have made the worst quality products that they can, at the lowest cost, playing the lowest wages. How is this the fault of the government?

Never mind the fact that no ride-on mower has one, or that one doesn't even exist.
