Down the politics rabbit hole on a tech site. OMG we are a 3rd world nation because we have a few less weather guessers and no money for free interweb. Everyone should hate the president, blah, blah, blah. He gave money to the rich guys like google, apple, and amazon blah, blah, blah, What this really comes down to is hating America. Obama came up with and implemented some pretty choice things during his eight year reign with his cell phone and his pen. Lots of people , your fellow Americans to be clear, didn't much care for that brand of stink either. So they voted in a boisterous, opinionated, driven, successful, tough, and sometimes even belligerent business man to follow up the last act. So instead of maybe becoming introspective and wondering how such a thing could happen and realizing its just possible some of the left's ideas are too extreme the public square becomes a fling fest where the babies in the culture fling their diaper contents constantly. This kind of nonsense should be beneath the tech community. Hating America has become the national pastime of the malcontents. At some point this translates to hating your community, your family, and yourself. Get help its just a few weather guessers in a country that has a multi-billion dollar 24/7 television network dedicated to just weather. Not to mention the billions spent on satellites, data collection stations, computers, all just to be wrong as often as right. Just how much money and how many morons does it take to achieve this ridiculous task? Oh, I forgot its just an excuse to foment hatred and divisiveness all in the name of love and diversity. IDIOTIC
Ah, Someone who has read Heinlein. Starship Troopers was one of his shortest works he should have a look at Job or Methuselah's children. Heinlein was at best humanist at most bordering on anarchy. I went through a spell when I read just about everything he wrote. Hist story telling and situational ethics scenarios were pretty mind blowing. Figures some idiot picks up some obscure expanded shorty story of his and decides they know the author. His stuff is advanced reading for people with open minds it certainly isn't a conservative diatribe.
Anyone who knows apples' history and isn't a sycophant is aware of just how abusive they are toward their users.Never owned any of their product because its always been over priced over hyped under performing junk assembled out of a bastard mix of proprietary parts and driven by software mangled up, closed and constricted by draconian EULAs. So for them to actually concede something to their corralled peasants and throw them a bone was a rather fine concession considering their approach to marketing and their attitude toward customers (more like suckers). Maybe later I'll tell you how I really feel about Apple, but hey folks line up for this stuff so, it must be good right?
Really? Who and how much is apple paying in bribes to keep this story in the news? Does anyone but the most devout apple fan boi think any of this nonsense is true? The more it is harped on the more absurd it becomes. Apple fan bois don't need convincing and anyone who has a fundamental knowledge hardware just rolls their eyes. Physical access is Root access.
Well I'm not as old a codger as some of these folks who replied. I really hate it when people are on my lawn though. I do squeak in with a 5 digit ID. I got a full house too. Irritatingly I have bad Karma whatever that means. I guess I'm not a loved/.er because I don't slather crap all over this "social media site" YAWN, Oh well I'm going back to sleep I'll post again in another 10 years or so...
Here goes, I got my first programming job in a machine shop over 25 years ago. Today I'm a dumb fat and happy cad guy in a construction company who also manages the companies pathetic yet effective network I built for them long ago (think last century). I make an ok living and am paid a fair wage. Bottom line is I came up through the trades. I have done some high flying exercises over the years including lots of start up crap when the money was hemorrhaging during the dot com days in the late 90's. Just in construction as an example there is this thing called David Bacon. Without going into the merits or detail what it fundamentally does is mandate minimum wages on work performed on any federal construction project. A typical rate is around 40$ per hour. Oh and did i mention overtime? A typical apprenticeship is 4 years at which time you are to be paid on a graduating scale for each year. So at age 22 or 23 a typical "journeyman" tradesman is knocking down 80K gross (before overtime). To add cream to their coffee they aren't dependent on "workers" to bail them out (pun intended) when their toilet stops up. So yeah the mayor has a point. Not everyone has the aptitude to actually "work" but, for those who do the compensation can get very "real" very fast. Oddly enough there are always jobs out there for the hard working talented ones...
the point of interest in this product is its fundamental principal that it is open. so some dimwit comes along with 10 mill and say hey ill steal that idea and get rich. well uhm no. you will burn through 10 million and make i'ts present organizer very comfortable (i don't blame him a bit either). next door the rap rip will pick up where they left off. if he thinks he can steal rap rip's new effort then i suppose they will have to deal with the wrath of of the contributors to the new forked project who i am sure are at least loosely related to some lawyers some where. this is proof that you do not have to be smart to have money. note to investors: open source is not a playground for capturing, stealing, and exploiting the work of stupid altruists...
what you sympathize with this turd? so i suppose you luv all the pharmaceutical and phallus expansion spam you get in your mailbox every day too? I have had some hard times but, have never gotten so desperate that I thought that I was entitled to do whatever I felt was the easiest way to steal money from someone else. if i had resorted to such action i sure wouldn't want anyone's sympathy and my view of anyone that did sympathize wouldn't be that they were compassionate, it would be what a sucker and it is too bad i didn't steal from that chump. pathetic!
Stick to what you know Slashdot.... next you will tell us that some brilliant guy came up with the revolutionary idea of using the earth as a thermal mass and pumping some kind of fluid through it to temper the fluid to either cool it down or heat it up based on the need. look i have said it before just because you own a computer that doesn't make you "technical". Next I'll log onto HPAC and they will have an article about the astonishing discovery of introducing "impurities" into pure silicone and passing electricity through it. They will even reveal its nifty sounding name something like "semi-conductors". Stay tuned folks next week we discover using fluid under extreme pressure to perform some kind of linear motion....
yeah,
but I have this thing called a land line. That pretty much works the same way. Except for 20$ more a month they include 1mB of dedicated bandwidth. Ive never seen a use for a $ell phone. Oh, but I am told in europe they got no infrastructure so I guess flat rate $ell phones are some kind of compensation...
you mean like all the biased reporting regarding windows? well I guess since it is the best operating system and it won then I guess looking back at the bias is kinda pointless. As would pointing out any problems with windows or any misrepresentations made by microsoft. It sure is great to live in a country that has a free press! that is unless you factor in the advertisers....
you reply to my post condemning the moderation system with a rant about what "everyone" believes condemning conservatism and it gets moderated a 5 absolutely proving my point. Thanks! That was Brilliant! You know if "everyone" felt as you say "everyone" does then why would there be such a close election time after time? I don't have a dog in this hunt. Discussing politics on slashdot is about as intelligent and useful as discussing religion in a hoar house.
Ok fair enough. However, I cant read every post on every topic. But there are certain subjects here where the moderation system is a total farce. Microsoft v Linux is the most blatant example. Politics is a close second. I like controversy, To some this would I guess make me a troll. I find that when opinion is involved I never agree totally with anyone. However I do like to get well stated opinions on many sides of the argument. This way I can come to an informed decision as to where I stand on a subjective topic. Now this site is "supposed" to be moderated yet, I can without fail predict how stories on certain subjects will be moderated and I chose to make a commentary on that as I know the "discussion" here will be EPIC FAIL from my point of view.
The rating system. Yup that sums it up. The term "discussion" implies that there will be some merit given to the person's argument. That just doesn't happen here. You know like, if you mention Windows and Linux in the same paragraph. I bet I could predict the outcome of any "discussion" about that too. There was a time when you could actually get some useful information from reading the musings of slashdot readers. But to say that this crowd has anything meaningful to say with regard to politics is a farce. However it does amuse me scan these troll fests. but, pretty much anything modded 4 or 5 is gonna be ignorant liberal fan boi bullshit. Which all by itself says a lot.
there is a knob on my monitor that says "brightness" but here it doesn't seem to help....
what a joke this will turn out to be. Here I will summarize before it starts. Liberal good = MOD 5 Conservative bad = Mod 5 Liberal bad = Mod 0 troll Conservative good Mod 0 troll.
Over the past few years a very quiet and innovative revolution has taken place in 3d graphics. I know this because I am immersed in it. Now I don't really know how much bandwidth will be required to make it all fluid. Without getting into brands or specific applications there is software that abstractionalizes all 3d entities into basically database records with a visual component. That visual component can then be placed and oriented into 3 dimensional space. This object can then provide as little or as much information about itself as is required. So I don't think that poo pooing the idea is makes it a stupid one. For over a decade I have imagined a 3-d warehouse that can be navigated visually and then reorganized according to whatever criteria amuses the user. It can be done now rather easily with the right combination of skilled people and software that exists now. Of coarse the computational power is a huge factor. However back in the day when I had a 1meg 386 with a 40 meg hard drive I could not even fathom 500 gigs of storage so that is a relative thing too. I just wish I had the resources and the backers to actually do it. I envy those that are doing it. I smirk at those that don't have the imagination or the knowledge to understand just how feasible useful things can be created this way. So stand by to be wrong.

Back in the 80' they would pull this crap every other year. go look it up. I thought it was bullshit then and I call bullshit now.

I find that FreeNAS and a pair of mirrored raid1 drives is suitable.
People who make such criticisms of people that buy nice things such as a car are compensating for that the fact that they are pettt jealous losers ;)

or,
you could be like the stylish brothers on my block and have 2 or 3 cellphones on you at all times!
I wonder what that is all about......

you must live in the desert or never leave you house then.
I rolled a 12
oh, that would have been much simpler, thanx for the insight
