  19. Re:Sorry but that's just wrong on Blender Compared To the Major 3D Applications · · Score: 2, Insightful

furthering your analogy, while an automatic is easier to drive than a standard transmission, there are things you acn do with a standard transmission that you can't do with an automatic. So yes there is a steeper learning curve to driving a standard and it is certainly 'harder' to drive a standard than an automatic at any given point in time, but when you need the features of a standard transmission and all you have is an automatic, then you are screwed.

Trying to defend bad UIs in OSS does no good for anyone. People don't want excuses and they certainly don't want to be told that it is their problem.

Denying that a UI is bad is not defending it. A UI that is hard to learn is not necessarily a bad UI. It might be if it were a telephone that grandma has to use, but Blender is not a telephone.

  20. Re:Maybe... on The World's Languages Are Fast Becoming Extinct · · Score: 2, Insightful

So unless you feel that history and archaeology are basically unimportant (probably not a uncommon opinion here), preservation of languages does have a rather important role in science.

Also, studying what is possible in real-world language syntax and grammar can teach us about the language faculties of our brain, and what its limits are.

So you are saying we should force people to learn these languages that are naturally dying out? How about we forbid the people speaking them to learn any other language and thus force them to live an isolated life that is unable to communicate with anyone else in the world? They are dying out because with new technology they can communicate with others, and choose to do so. They could have chosen differently but they didn't.

I think it's great that people are trying to record what they can of languages for academic reasons but the 'destruction' of a language is natural. Nature is cruel. Ask the salmon in the claws of the bear if you don't believe me. Wait - you probably don't speak salmon.

  24. Re:Fixing the wrong problem on Universal Offers iPod-Resistant Music · · Score: 1

Universal's problem is making money - it has nothing to do with downloading, nor does it have anything to do with free. Do you think they care where you want to listen to music? They simply care that there exists a revenue stream for them. The upfront cost of developing this system would be relatively low (assuming they didn't have to negotiate with themselves to get the rights to the music to do this). If it works, they get money - if it doesn't, they don't lose that much, or even make just a little bit.

Besides, I have 2 "MP3" players that could play these files, as well as a laptop or two. I also have an iPod that can't and a PC or two that can't. I will probably be checking out the site to see what's up - after all, it won't cost me anything.
