What is most telling about this legislation is the timing. Politicians are extremely savvy about when the public is most willing to accept legislation they don't want. The London bombings provide the perfect event for getting Americans in the mood to accept this, and our politicians know it very well. They took advantage of 911 the same way to sell Americans (I was never sold) on the Iraq War. Of course later when then euphoria wears off and the hangover sets in, poll ratings begin to drop. But politicians don't care about poll ratings. They care about grabbing power. That's why we have checks and balances. But now that right-wingers own all 3 branches, checks and balances are playing second fiddle to the biggest power grab from the people since WWII.

This is they're business. The reason OS/2 is not being released in parts is that MS has a stranglehold on the desktop market and huge leverage against anyone that threatens it. IBM is terrified of pissing off MS. Linux desktop is DEAD. It has no true support among major businesses. A truly great Linux desktop could be written in ... well, about as much time as little ole Apple wrote theirs for Darwin. Period. Sorry to bust anyone's bubble.

  5. It's Unix vs. Windows on Desktop Linux on x86 - Adapt or Die · · Score: 2, Interesting

The game is Unix vs. Windows.

Micosoft is breaking its noodle to crack the Unix server market. Now here come two Unix-based OSes entering the its desktop market. The more Unix that enters the desktop market, the less chance Microsoft has of taking over the Server market. Why? Because Microsoft is trying to define the server market by creating "features" and proprietary formats in the desktop market. The best example is Outlook-Exchange which is dominating the Intranet mail. That could change. What if Novell open sources Groupwise (yes, you heard it here first!)? What would the repercussions be? What if OSX becomes a clone OS running on any hardware?

I know this post has been somewhat of a rambling wreck, but really you see my point. Unix on the desktop is what MS fears. So I say OSX is good for Linux.

Now, why isn't it happening NOW? Because MS is scaring the shit out of hardware vendors with reprisal should they abet this effort. But eventually the dike will break and ... I think I see it starting to break now... Bill's got all ten fingers plugging leaks ... whoops Bill, there's one more leak right at about waste level...

  9. The Switch will HELP linux on Dvorak Says Apple Move to Intel Will Harm Linux · · Score: 1

Come people! Look at the obvious. The one thing that's holding Linux back is that Windows is running the desktop -- that MS is the monopolist. If Apple can take desktop share from Microsoft, that is great for Linux because it puts a Unix on the desktop. All of a sudden, server-workstation integration paradigm shifts. Unix firendly workstation applications makes Unix servers more attractive. The desktop is the battlefield. If Linux people want the desktop, then write the desktop that can compete with OS X. Until then, Linux needs Apple to win the desktop.

As for the server environment, Linux/BSD people will stick with Linux/BSD. Mikersoft people will stick with Mikersoft. Who's left to switch to OS X?

I'm an admin for a large national law firm in the US. I must say that really what is going to kill Microsoft is Windoes XP and Server 2003. These OSes are so much better than previous ones from Microsoft that I see no reason to upgrade in the remotely foreseaable future. Software assurance? Forget it. I.E. becomes a problem again? Use Mozilla. MS stops "supporting" them? Big deal. We plan to use these OSes ad infinitum. Now I suspect that most of corporate america is thinking the same thing. So where's the future revenue coming from? That's why MS is moving into Antivirus. They'll move into other enterprise areas also. I'd say they're in for a rough ride. Especially considering their multifront battles with Sony and Google and Linux. I don't wish them good luck.

Groupwise is very nice but still the client is a few light years behind Outlook 2003. But the Server has certain features that make it light years ahead of Exchange. So you end up with a few Outlook junky grumblers and a majority of satisfied users. The problem is when some of the grumblers are at the top of the company comparing notes with Outlook users at other companies. They don't understand the technical justifications for Groupwise over Exchange and the herd mentality dominates. Then there's always of Groupwise's high cost and of course it's closed.
