Those wondering that this would be useful for
doze games, are out of luck since DOS/doze need
to write to their boot device.
As for Linux boot CDs in general, a RAM disk
must be used for anything a harddisk would
be used for normally (for e.g. swap). So a requirement to use this effectively would be loadsa RAM.
Also initially reading data from the CD is
going to be slow, so loading big games will
be very slow.
He's trying to divert the criticism about RH7
to a M$ V Red Hat debate? This is just silly
and actually a microsoftian diversion tactic
IMHO.
They released a beta compiler, code that wasn't
tested continuously for more than 3 weeks (the
update daemon), etc..
Basic stuff really, just to get the latest release
out so the stock proce might go up, and so we
could test it for them. I know we're a community
but basic testing first please before releasing
the bloody thing to everybody, please.
Steve Gibson is loosing his touch I think.
His origonal great product was Spinrite, but
it's pretty much useless now as it can't access
any new drives at low enough a level to be
effective.
So he has resorted to screen savers/ TCP
connection monitors/ FUD
An important point you missed is that
Kylix will also support C++ like C++ builder
in the next release. That's when the large
takeup will happen IMHO.
Note this will also mean that Inprise would
sell more C++ builder/Delphi for doze also,
as this would allow people to write progs
for both platforms, which will really be needed
over the next while.
Most people will not port from doze to Linux just
because of the enhanced stability etc. They will
need an easy transition to Linux that Kylix will
provide.
Well they're not just going to fade a way,
with no value for shareholders. This is just
silly.
IMHO the 3 main options they have in increasing
order of preference are:
CorelDraw 10 + Wordperfect 10 revenue will soon fix things (this will probably happen).
Sell some of there other company holdings (rebel, gojo, many others I can't remember).
Sell off some products.
Sell the whole shooting match to IBM/HP/whoever
The bottom line is that they have great products,
which is fundamentally all that matters, and
the current cash flow crisis is then by definition
temporary.
I'm tired of people being tricked into thinking
by the popular press that Corel have only months
left. It's just ridiculous. It has over 1000
employees, and a huge range of top class products.
And they do give a lot to the opensource community. (contributed to Wine, SMB, QT, gecko,...)
I can't recommend enough Wordperfect Office 2000
for Linux. It's way ahead of anything else on
the platform.
How is this better different than Corel Update?
Could Helixcode not have used this and made it
better? I already supports.deb and had preliminary support for.rpm I understand.
Why all the duplication in the Linux world lately?
Your choice is simeple in my opinion. Use Corel Linux 1.1 and Wordperfect. Corel is based on Debian which is really easy to keep synchronised with a central "image" you set up (look into apt-get). As for wordprocessing, there is nothing close to Wordperfect 2000 at the moment.
This is of the utmost importance for the acceptance of Linux. There is far too much fragmentation in user space. It's just silly.
I looked around last week for a widely accepted C++ framework for use on Linux. It's ridiculous, about 20 different (equally attractive) options.
Choice is of course good. But the first thing people should do before writing some code is: a. Has it been done already. b. Has anything like it been done that I can tweak
This is the only advantage Windoze now has over Linux. It's easy to get MFC/VB/ATL developers as that's really the only options in the windoze space.
In summary people need to stop going off writing stuff for their own glory, and think of the general benefit/detriment to the Linux community as a whole.
Emm it's not the windows binary! It's compiled against Wine! Anyway Corel are only using this as a temporary measure and have said they are working on native versions.
Wordperfect 8 is a completely free (& small) download. It's actually very good and suffices for 90% of the things I want to do. I bought WPO2K4L deluxe immediately when it came out. It's really miles ahead of anything else available for Linux and comparable to MS office. I actually find wordperfect more intuitive.
The feedback form just returns "internal server error"! Maybe it's overloaded:-(
Anyway the problem I was trying to relate was: For duplicate folder names within the bookmark hierarchy, they're displayed incorrectly from the bookmark menu.
When the folders were selected, multiple duplicate folder entries were displayed for one of the duplicated folder names.
Alpha systems have a really sophisticated bus to get the most out of the system. It has a PCI subsystem and this is connected to the I/O controllers, memory and CPU not through a bus but a switch. I.E. there is not contention between the various subsystems! They are all switched! Run Suse 6.3 or RedHat 6.2 on a DS20 SMP (max 2 CPUs) and you will be amazed at the performance. Nothing really approaches it for the price.
If you develop device driver for example, your're definitely not going to write as many LOC as a VB developer for e.g. (Unless you're Alan Cox that is:-)). Seriously though it's only applicable to compare LOC output between people doing things that are VERY closely related. There's sooo much more to programmer productivity than LOC,
Why did you make this statement?
Did you just guess?
PI is a transcendental number.
Linux has loadable kernel modules now in case
you hadn't noticed. They've been supported
for the last few years.

Not ideal...

I think Mike Gancarz' book:
The unix philosophy
is better, from the "Think UNIX" title perspective
From "The UNIX philosophy" which I recommend
everyone should read, it states that printed
data is dead, i.e. you can't manipulate it
in anyway.
This still doesn't get around the problem of
funding the work you talk about, but please
if you do sort that out, just release an
online version.

At least you got the URL right this time :-)
Previously you posted www.jennicam.com !

Hi,
I've have a 6809 based email server
running modified sendmail on OS9,
and it serves >>100,000 users fine.
This will be a good chance for new
carriers like Jtel to become
established.
This book has been out of print for
the last 3 months ! I checked Amazon
again today and it has just become
available. How convenient
