Then you can only say "Do you sell water, whateverelse is in soap, and water". You can't say do you sell soap and water or you are mentioning water twice. But face it...you can't make soap without water.
D. It's just a TV show, folks. Don't base your life on it, unless you really, really identified with Galaxy Quest
Galaxy Quest kicked ass.
Crewman #5: "I changed my mind. I don't want to go."
Numbnuts: "After all of the wining and pleding you don't want to go"
Crewman #5: "I am gonna die. Crewman always die"
(ok so I didn't get it perfect...but who cares..you get the point)
Ah...Windows already does this using a little spec called ACPI. And no...the video memory isn't saved. And no the registers aren't saved thus can't be restored. You have to have drivers that know how to do that and know when do that. The "kernel" can't do that for you in some generic manner. duh.
God when is someone gonna actually put PnP and ACPI into Linux. Oh wait..Linus said that he didn't want to increase the kernel the meg or two it would take to do that...oh well...guess you are stuck back in the DOS type darkages.
Ah...you make a very good point when you say "...or plug in a USB digital camera...". Without any PnP support in Linux how can one expect to be able to support the ability to plug in a USB digital camera and then unplug it when you are done with it?
So I opened up my trusty My Pictures...select a image...clicked on "Order prints online". It walked me through a wizard and guess what? Kodak was one of the companies I can order my pictures online with (RC1 build). Geee wiz....the writter of that article needs to check their facts first before they publish an article....just goes to show you to not believe everything you read online.
If you want screen shots of all of this....ask.
So your saying that MS has compition in the OS market? But I thought they were an monopoly with no compition in the OS market? At least that is what 8 judges have said.
Before making a post like this please ask yourself one question. What would opening up Microsoft's source code for public consumtion do as a punishment to their monopoly? If you know the answer I would love to hear it.
Maybe you mis-interperted what your ex-CEO said. Maybe he actually said, "I hope you guys have enough money to last till June" cause under his breath he was thinking, "Cause its gonna take you that long to find a new job".
Yup and the feature is off by default as the article mentioned. Just turn it on or turn it off if you want. As to how it looks...you can completely tell it is a different link because when you click on it it creates a little I icon and you have to click on that to get the context menu with the link info. If someone can't tell the difference then they need to really get a clue.
You are talking about high school. High school isn't reality. High school is those 4 years in which every kid around you tries to make you do what they say. In the real world you don't get labeled as dangerous if you do what you mentioned. You get a job at some rising.com (well...not anymore.:) ) and make a fortune. Once you get out of high school this will make sense.
So hows the power management support? How long is your battery life? I am willing to be bet it sucks. Hows the Plug N' Play? Can I randomly plug in a USB device into the laptop and have it "just work" without having to do any configuration or mucking around or rebooting to find the usb device.
Hows about that CardBus support? PMCIA is old news boys.
How about 1394? Does it work? Can I use a 1394 CardBus..oppps..wait..no cardbus support.
Does the system actually know if it is on DC power and adjust its power usage to help increase your battery life or does it just run the system full speed?
What happens if you run one of those new cool P3 1gig laptops? Can your system actually run longer than 10mins? I bet not since that processor has such current drains that it can't run on DC at 1gig without causing the laptop's safe guards to power the system off due to heat problems.
Oh that reminds me...are your fans always running on the system? That eats batteries too.
What all of you seem to be missing is is FreeBSD, Linux, any flavor of UNIX a good OS to run on my laptop. I know the answer is no because of two key missing elements. Power Management support (and no APM doesn't count as it is support int he BIOS not in the OS) and Plug N' Play (hows about docking man...does it work?)
And I would like to make one more comment. If a company is foolish enough to rely on DSL for their Internet access and hosting of their servers...then they get what they get. There is a reason why T lines are consider "commerical grade".
No they said Microsoft is a monopoly due to their OS selling/blah blah blah practices...nothing has ever been said about MSN. MSN is the underdog in that department.
Guess what? Where I live in Issaquah Highlands in Washington State, USA the entire neighborhood is wired with a fiberoptics. Everyone's place is conencted via a 100mbps network and every home, townhome and apartment is wired. We have 3 ISP's who can provide us with Internet Service. Hell soon Microsoft is gonna be building their second largest campus to this place and maybe I will have 100mbps RAS access!
If you don't like the new interface they put into WindowsXP you can always turn it off. Some of the icons will be different (seems just like a refresh) but you can have your old Win2k like interface just like you maybe used to.
So then....stop trying to tout Linux as an alternative to Windows!! It may be another OS but if it is kept the way you want it to be then it will always just be a hobbist OS. Nothing wrong with that but people shouldn't try to tout it as this grand thing that is all wonderful and that.
Because people do this every day with Windows. They bitch and moan when it gets upgraded and what worked before doesn't work now. So why not apply this same standard to Linux or any other version of Unix?
And those people are likely going to want to have the newest and best Java run-time that they can have. Microsoft's isn't that because Sun said no.
What did you need out off that control that required you to ship an updated version of it?
Then you can only say "Do you sell water, whateverelse is in soap, and water". You can't say do you sell soap and water or you are mentioning water twice. But face it...you can't make soap without water.

APM sucks and the ASUS P2B is the worst ACPI implementation out there. Plus it is 3 years old.
I know another microkernel out there that seems to get the job done...take a look at your favorite Windows2000 system.

That's funny. I think that the "Church of Scientology" is going to IPO soon. Want some?
