Forgot to mention that you had to spend at least $30 on three different visits and pay by speedpass.

  2. I got mine for free. on Exxon And Timex Release The Speedpass watch · · Score: 2, Informative

A chain of grocery stores near my home ran a promotion: spend at least $30 and pay with your speedpass, get a free Timex/Speedpass watch.

The grocery chain is running a pilot program in my area-- as soon as we found out about it, we went up to the customer service desk, hooked our speedpass into their accounting system and a month later had a new watch!

  3. Re:Firefly on Firefly: A Special Feature · · Score: 2, Insightful

I thought the show was slow until I watched about 4 or 5 episodes. My husband was really into it, so I was "forced" into watching it.

What I really liked about the show (once I understood the characters and their motivations) was the rhythm that developed between the plot, dialogue and action. I had to become invested in the story in order to appreciate the speed of delivery.

Yes, but I like other Windows users, won't bother switching from mozilla to internet explorer.

And if most slashdotters are using ie, well, it's a sad state, isn't it? I hate opening ie because (1) it takes so long to load and (2) it sabatoges my browsing and takes me to the Windows Update page... not to mention pop-ups, oh terrible pop-ups....

Guess that's one way to make sure that the site will stay up.

  6. more on ferrets on Household Pets for the Common Geek? · · Score: 1

For the last year I have had four ferrets, though I only started out with two. These are my recommendations:

Buy more than one: This will prevent YOU from being the focus of attention whenever the ferret is out of the cage. It wants to play... and it will play with you if nobody else is around... this is a great thing, except if you want to get work done! (It will do pretty much anything to get your attention!)

Let it out to play: Ferrets go crazy when they are locked up in a cage for days at a time. They need stimulation, which can only come from being outside the cage. The last ferret I rescued was fat and spastic because he was let out for half and hour every week or two-- he thought that every second he was out of the cage was play-time, so I had an exhausted ferret trying to keep on playing.

The Ten Minute Rule: Leave a glass of water/soda/beer in a room and within ten minutes a furry nose will get into the glass and induce a spill. I have ruined more keyboards this way.... and now I have a no drink without supervision rule for myself and my husband!

I love my ferrets more than anything! They are not an annoying as cats, who jump on your lap and demand to be petted. They can be trained and are fun and cuddly, you just have to work at it!

Scooping the litter and washing bedding regularly will prevent ANY odor!

    Good luck choosing a pet!

Thanks-- I was able to access it by going to http://webmail.mac.com as you suggested.

  8. Can't Access from a non-Mac on WebMail Beta II Available · · Score: 1

Isn't the point of web-mail to provide a way to access your mail when you are away from your own computer? I just tried to access iTools (yes, I have an iTools account already) from my W2K station at work and was denied access because I must be on a Mac to access this part of iTools.

Why provide web-mail when you have to be sitting at your own computer to access it?

  9. Cancelling the "AOL Piggybacking" ""Service"" on Disconnecting · · Score: 1

What would a 70-year-old user say under those circumstances, or a kid, or somebody who didn't speak English very well? Or somebody who just didn't want Brian jeering at him in a voice that vacillated between rude and intimidating?

I'm an English speaking American and I didn't understand the mumbo-jumbo that an AOL customer service representative spewed at me when I tried to cancel service.

Apparently, I agreed to three months of free service. I have no idea how that happened (oh, they were happy to explain that when I called back four months later wondering about the new charges).

About the "Piggybacking" service that AOL provides. I had a cable modem and signed up for the piggybacking service so I could try out AOL for my mother. I would try to surf AOL but was confronted with timeouts at every turn. Even within AOL (not a partner that was another web site) it timed out all the time! It got so annoying that I would try to use the service and quit after 3 minutes!
