    I have a .ac.uk connection and would really like SUSE linux 8.0 when it arrives but I cannot really afford to buy it. Why can't i download the full cd set? I dont need the extra support from buying it

    There is no way i could afford to buy visual studio and office 2000 (XP now) but m$ do/did them from £99 so I won both. The same goes for mathematica which i have on student licence again for much less that the retail price of the "pro" versions.



    A lot of companies are no realising that people stick with what they know. Give a student a discount on your software and when they go on to ear big bucks they will buy the retail versions. (Hello calling macromedia)

    Actually the scissors dont close instantly. The clsoing action propergates along the metal at the speed of sound in the metal. Same with waggling a long rod. Speed of sound in steel = 5000m/s ish right? (i dunno the real number)

    Same with tugging on a lightyear long rope doesn't "instantly" send information to the otherend

    Acer Travel mates (well my 312T) do the same thing in SUSE linux. If you shut the case it goes into suspend mode (function key +f3) to hybernate fully i needed to leave a fat32 40MB partition to dump the ram to as the bios didn;t seem to want to dump to the linux parition.

    Obviously i dont use the laptop for large numerical simulations but i just tested it with a fortan numbercruncher program running and it woke up fine

    With the VIA 266a being the fastest chipset out there.... Also being rock solid stable way beyond the 133(266DDR) with the epox boards going to 200(400DDR) with good ram chips

    This is even more true with big numberical simulations (that you are too lazy to port to fortan) The new Intel Compiler running on a P4 really makes the code fly even compared to MS VS6.0 (student edition)


    gcc is nice in that I can run a copy to develop for my pc or use it to cross compile demos for my Dreamcast but a good IDE for C++ in linux is always going to be a good thing for those who want such a thing. There is a time and a place for two terminals and a text editor and the same is true for IDEs

    I am a bit of a geek with a few PCs in my room + lapto + stero equipment like many a slashdot reader has I am sure. However I find that I possitivly cannot sleep if there is anything electrical near my bed. I accidentally left a mobile phone near me the other night and couldn't sleep a wink. Probably caused by too mush slashdotting and irc. My GF is similar she cannot sleeo with her alarm clock by her bed as it gives her nightmares

    Generally -4C and almost silent running. A few overclockers UK people get 1.4 g athlons to 1.8/1.9

    All seven discs are encoded with the Macrovision(TM) AntiCopy process. The above information pertains to the North American release only.

    When are we getting them in region 2? Will ours be macrovision free? As we know only you US guys copy them to VHS for leet pirate salez :o)

    The university network run in the UK by Janet is in constant need of extra bandwidth be it for normal use (downloading linux isos from mirror.ac.uk) or for filesharing. Janet charges the UK unis around 2p per MB which can mount up if 1000s of users in halls are pulling stuff over the atlantic but interuni stuff is free.


    Some universitys are now capping people at around adsl speeds to try and limit the charges
