    Maybe... we did develop via evolution... then we kicked the shit out of the big G's little experiment and sent him packing.

    Yeah... that's the ticket... I mean... shit, if you're going to start questioning "established fact" (as the sticker suggest) then the best place to start (IMHO) is the weakest link.

    Personally, I would love to be in a school like those stupid Bible thumpers want. That way I could make their life a miserable hell hole every day when they come to school and want to "debate" reality.

    I would say that it really depends on what happens when you open up a shell and type:
    man man
    But... that isn't really what "defines" the term.

    I believe that in the end it is all about system calls.

    In the end, it would be up to these guys to say that you are a Unix OS. The closer you get to meeting the spec... the more "Unix like" you are.

    And "pretty" isn't necessarily worth $250.

    Not running Windows...

    Not paying yearly for Virus software...

    Not constantly checking for security updates...

    Knowing that every time I turn my machine on to do something really important that absolutely must be done right now and know it will "just work", even if I've never done it before...

    Abso-fscking-loutly Priceless. (easily justifying the $250)

    If it is just going in a closet to be a file server, he is probably better off buying the smaller drive.

    Keep the OS on the factory drive.

    Buy an external USB drive (or better yet... a drive enclosure and supply your own drives) and keep your data there.

    Use a format on the disks that will be readable if the "server" dies.

    I own two Macs.

    Neither have the factory keyboard or mouse attached. (OK, technically the powerbook does... but it also has an external keyboard and mouse plugged in.)

    Save me the dough... keep that sh*t. I'll get my own.

    Especially compared to an iPod...

    They are not just selling one thing. They are selling a lot if inter-related things... you can't take it out of context and understand the product(s).

    The MacMini is geared towards the people that buy the $349 POS you just pointed out and realize that the only usable parts are the display, mouse and keyboard. (at best)

    Let's face it.

    You can not compare a computer NOT running OSX to one that DOES.

    If you want a piece of crap, buy a piece of crap.

    I really wish there was such a thing as a "barebones" mac, or that they'd open the platform up to third parties. But then, they'd face the same software challenges as MSFT, and their OS would perform about as well.

    And stop trying to drag everyone else down to your level.

    Yes, but how do you justify paying $13/month for just a program guide which is free on tv.yahoo.com or your cable provider's site?

    Easy.

    I can work as many hours as I want, and my billing rate is $40/hr.

    If I have to spend more than ~20 minutes* babysitting the box in one month... then I've "spent" the $13 dollars.

    * I'll leave the exact calculation for the truly pedantic... this post is costing me money. ;-)

    Up until at least 5PM the tickets are only $5.50: not too bad.

    We aren't all in high school.

    Some of us remember when the matinee movie cost a quarter (US)... and that included the popcorn and soda.

    So, yeah... $5.50 looks like a lot. You just busted the $20 mark for a family of four and still haven't bought any refreshments.

    you are making the copyrighted material available for others and you know you are.

    While I agree with your sentiment, I'm sure it would be incredibly easy to put twelve people on a jury that have used software and have no inkling of how it works.

    I think proving that the user of the software knows that in the bowels of the software it is sharing the same file that it is downloading would be quite hard.

    I can see it now:

    "So, you assert that the software uploads the movie?"

    "Yes..."

    "The movie we are downloading... because we don't have it?"

    "Well, it doesn't quite work that way..."

    "Please answer the question. Yes or No. The software shares the movie we are downloading because we don't have it yet?"

    "Yes"

    "So, even tho we don't have the movie... this software manages to upload it to others?"

    "It isn't..."

    "Yes or No please."

    "um... yeah... I guess you could say that"
