Warning: About 1 million years of evolution of the human species required
While I do agree that natural selection will take a logn time, there are some steps we can take to speed this process up.
1. Start having more children. We can never obtain a majority if we don't step up our carnal activities to the amazing speed at which morons reproduce.
2. Find potential geeks and train them in the ways of technology and freedom. If we each took one such person in to our care, we could double our numbers.
3. The third and most effective method of speeding up the natural selection of geeks is the BFG9000. We need to develop a weapon of mass destruction that can only be weilded after reading the man page.
A nuclear power plant, with all that tech, simply heats water to steam and moves a turbine. The nuclear part is just a better heater. This strikes me as silly.
I couldn't agree more. What we really need is some peizoelectric material that can turn the molecular motion of heat directly in to electricity.
Well, in fact, I don't take my first ever working prototype running pre-alpha code and show it to the world end expect people to 'ooh' and 'aah' at the innovative ways I manage to make my product crash. -----------------------------

I thing the GPL needs to add a clause about monitary compensation. Somthing to the point of:
Uppon distributing this GPL software you agree to comply with the tearms of the GPL. If you do not comply, you are liable to the copyright holder(s) an amount to be not less than $15,000 per copy distributed in violation of the GPL.
A clause like this would at least would make a starting point for awarding damages.
As with most things in life, you get what you pay for. Do people really expect teir 1 support with their $299.99 Windows box from the local mega-warehouse-electronics store?
The way I see it, you have two options with tech support. Pay for it or shut the hell up. -----------------------------

I gave up on Perl as well. That's just how I felt back when I was first learning perl. Now I'm sorry for all the 'cool things' I did in perl because I have to maintain them.
I am a serious Python addict now. Python is a beautyful language. It allows programs to be very compact and still be amazingly easy to read.
If a cat were to walk across my keyboard while I was working on a perl program, I'd have a hard time seperating the line noise from the perl code. In Python, the noise stands out like a flashing red sign shouting "BROKEN." -----------------------------

I believe the largest factor in Perl's popularity is Lary Wall's personality. He's just silly.
Programming perl has a joke or two on every page making it seem like fun to learn that crazy language.
Not to mention the sense of power you feel when you type some code that is incoherent gibberish to 99.99% of the world but is actually a usefull perl program. -----------------------------

I trained a bazillion DOS users on how to use Windows. It wasn't all that hard. I'll train your 1000's of Windows users to use KDE. It will be WAY easier then the DOS->Windows transition was.
I'll also rewrite your dozen or so programs that you use to run on Linux instead of windows. I will set up a Citrix server for the transition period because it will most likely take me more than a day to rewrite all your programs.
As for the "How to use Linux and X" classes, I suggest we enforce standardization on the KDE desktop and avoid the Linux and X training in the first place. We don't want people futzing with the command line interface anyway. We should restrict access to the command line interface to system administrators and programmers.
I'm serious too. I require only $50,000/year and health insurance.
Don't think I'm just calling your bluff. It can be done and I'm willing to prove just how easy it is.
I love my Microsoft Mouse, Keyboard, and GamePad. They are some of the best Linux compatible devices I've used. (Note to Microsoft: Please make a wireless version of your optical mouse!)
Hell, I'll probably buy 20 Xbox's to set up as a render farm for the game I'm working on and maybe even a few more Xbox's to replace my workstations. I just hope Debian/GNU/Linux will work on the X-box.
Microsoft makes damn good hardware. It's their software that I won't touch with a ten foot pole. -----------------------------

I think the whole point about the 'public defenders office' idea is that EVERYBODY can use the services.
Nobody should have to waste money defending himself against frivolous lawsuits.
In fact, while I think a public defender would be a great idea, I think even more needs to be done. The defendant should be automatically garenteed FULL reimbursment for legal fees, travel expenses, time off work, and any other expenses caused by the lawsuit.
I was recently on the recieving end of a frivolous lawsuit and even though I won the lawsuit and won my countersuit I was still out a lot of money from lost wages, expenses, etc.
In my opinion, our legal system needs to come down HARD on people who abuse the system.
Well, I don't know when it became policy (or even if it still is) but the offer was made in 1997. -----------------------------

I ended up returning four DVD players because I thought they were defective.
Eventually the sales person asked if I was trying to run the signal through my VCR and told me I had to buy a $70 thingy to remove Macrovision from the signal. -----------------------------

I've only been to a tropical island once for about a month so the heat and pests didn't have time to get to me. Now that you mention it though, a cold climate would be much easier to live in.
I wonder what Canada is charging for Vancouver. -----------------------------

Until the military starts using this technology on their own pilots and divers, and it gets a lot cheaper, I'm going to hold back.
The US military does use laser vision correction for it's pilots. One of the benfits the Air Force
recruiter promised me if I signed up for service was FREE laser vision correction so I could be a pilot.
Of course, I didn't sign up because of the low wages and long term contract so I'm still wearing glasses.
I have a few suggestions:
1. Let's not call it "Geekdonia" on "Nerdvanna" as that would be likely to tip off the island's high concentration of slashdotters.
2. We will need some sort of doomsday device so the island will not be attacked by other countries and all the inhabitants enslaved at software mills.
3. A tropical island would be nice:)

They charge for commercial deployment. On top of that they charge by the 'volume' of curl usage.
Curl was dead before the press release.
