  1. Re:Georgia Tech Historical Note on The History of the CompSci Degree · · Score: 1

    Georgia Tech had an undergrad ICS (information and computer science) program that started in 1972. I started in 1973 with the second class of undergrads. IIRC, when I was looking at undergrad Computer Science programs at the time there were only two. Stanford and GA Tech.

  3. Worry about corrupt politicos! on Supreme Court Rules Private Property Can be Seized · · Score: 1

    The ruling seems reasonable IF you accept the premise that the local government is working on behalf of the people it serves. If my memory serves me correctly, all politicians are corrupt, all the time, absolutely. They are only concerned with number one, and you and I aren't even in the running to be number two.

    So the danger of this ruling is that corrupt politicians will line their pockets through these types of takings for commercial use. The Supreme Court however does not have the power to alter law based on future corruption of local governments. How sad, since it would be so sensible to do so. We now have a carrot dangling in front of corrupt goverment, any guesses as to when they are going to start developing your backyard with their developer bribers^h^h^h^h^h^h ... uh .. friends?

  5. Re:You are right... on C++ Templates: The Complete Guide · · Score: 1

    As someone who has had to use templated code in many a port, I would never ever advocate using templates. If you say that you need to use templates then you don't understand OO. If you say you actually like using templates well that you don't understand programming. If you say that templates work across compilers then you are insane!

    As has been mentioned templates are evil, exorcise them from all code. Now!

    Just to be clear you can't patent out of order execution (a concept). You can only patent a specific implementation of it.

  7. On the cheap. on Monitor One-Upmanship From IBM · · Score: 2, Interesting

    How about hooking up 4 15" lcd displays at 1024x768. Costs are about $1100 for the 4 displays. Just hack (hacksaw :-)) the cases and put them in a bigger case. Yes you need 4 adapters to run them. But throw in a machine just for running an X server and you still are in the $2000 range for a 2048x1524 resolution 30" monitor.

    Sheesh, my first 21" monitor (NEC) cost $3600 back in 1982.

  8. didn't Dr. Dobbs have something like it? on Printed Embedded Data GUIs · · Score: 1

    I thought Dr Dobbs (or maybe another magazine) in the late 80's or early 90's would embed their source code listings in the magazine with a similiar scheme and you could then download the source using a special reader. Seemed hokey at the time and it fizzled after about a year.
