And then another company starts, mysteriously with the same management as the first, and creates a competing product (which happens to be the only one compatible with the proprietary software of the previous company)... thus 'forcing' you to buy the new product(and soon, since your old key is about to run out), and sign into a new, less reasonable, contract for the keys. sounds like a m$ scheme to me... oh wait, m$ is trying to do this ... No, because I can get a laptop with out a 3com ethernet, since 3com does put clauses into their contracts that say 'if you want to use us, you shall offer no alternatives'. Nor did US Robtics (when it was at its pinnacle) demand such clauses.

I do not mind buying a bundled product. I do not want to eliminate microsoft. I do not want to infringe upon their legitimate profits. I want to stop their infringing on mine. I do not want a lesser quality product being the only preinstalled option available on machines that I purchase (thus forcing me to pay for something that I do not feel is a quality product, it bypasses the competition discouraging poor products). Granted that is changing now, which started with some of the bolder and better established computer retailers choosing to pay exorbitant licencing agreements with microsoft for the privilege of offering an alternative. But of course, that started after I purchased the laptop.

I am under the impression that microsoft put clauses in many of their agreements with vendors, that do not allow them to retail other operating systems. I believe that this constitutes abuse utilizing microsoft's monopoly of the market. Or did i miss the point?

The issue is that they dont ask. They tell in an agreement that most people click right through. I dont trust m$, so I ditched my only hotmail account a while ago. They advertise a free email service. While I am quite aware of the TANSTAFL philosophy, they should not advertise it as free, if there is a cost. The common assumption is that they get their $ from advertising and linking. The point is that this is another example of their attempt to obfuscate and hide thier true intentions to lure people into using thier service. They want the customers who want privacy, and to violate that privacy. Kinda the cake and eat it too. And they got caught, but instead of confessing, they are saying that ooohhh ... it was all a big misunderstanding.

What if someone emails me a code or code snippet for review (for whatever reason, yes, it is insecure, but people have done it.). Does that mean that I think that m$ should have access to it? Not at all. m$ should respect my intellectual property, since it is, after all, the great protector of intellectual property (its 'own' anyway)

He seems quite proficient at making dramatic, sweeping statements concerning all sorts of things (wether he knows what he is talking about or not). This sort of 'journalism' is best suited for tabloids. Is this where slashdot is heading? towards becoming that tabloid of technical world? I have read several articles from mr. katz, and they all seem to lack a solid basis in the technical world. I think that i know now what I should expect from mr. katz. His 'Articles' read more like sermons or calls to arms then any sort of responsible journalism. Though his works are syntactically and grammatically quite elegant, the content is lacking. Catch phrases and grandiose statements concerning new sweeping revolutions that exist only in the minds of those who have a weak grasp on technology is not the basis for good writing. mr. katz, please educate yourself before you presume to discuss on a topic.

And some people can not handle it, because they have never had to imagine or conceive of anything going wrong.
