"More or less" doesn't make it an innovation. Regardless since it was based on DOS which was purchased, it can be argued that all Windows derivatives are derivatives of DOS since without DOS, Windows would have never existed and we would all be running OS/2. And the code used in DOS was what 95 and 98 were based on. And though NT was a rewrite, they still recycled code from the original OS's which were based on DOS and couldn't exist without DOS.

Sure they have rewritten their operating systems since then, they have also rewritten Powerpoint, Global Crossing and all the other programs they bought. Does that nullify the fact that they didn't innovate with them? No. They still failed to innovate. They're just rewriting stuff that other people did first and they failed at.

I heard how they all used more resources but never have I heard things as bad as this. Since when did 98 require DRM? Since when did 2000 require a monitor with DRM technology built in? They deliberately mangled the build to make it so CONSUMERS CAN DO LESS and as a result, had to re-engineer the entire file system and more, thus re-inventing the wheel and breaking backwards compatibility. Not since 98 has backwards compatibility been broken so badly.

And the demands they made on hardware manufacturers but failing to get the requirements to them in a timely manner is their own fault. Before now, Microsoft never REQUIRED hardware manufacturers to change with them. Now they do. And this is the first time we have seen a shift like this as hardware manufacturers try to time their product releases with Microsofts.

So while you have seen this before, you must have special eyeballs that can see into a world in which the rest of us don't live because this hasn't happened before. Good luck in your fantasy world.

Also, I have to wonder how many returns have actually been subtracted from those numbers and pre-sales figures to pump up those numbers... especially when they are having to discount VISTA to get people to buy it when driver support isn't there, software support isn't there and VISTA still has mysterious stalls, crashes and slow downs.

You would be the exception then. because report after report after report keeps coming in saying the opposite. Not only from individuals either but from OEM's! DELL and HP are having issues as well as others and though they made promises (as told to them by Microsoft) as to what would work and what wouldn't, it's turning out that the cold hard facts are that there are still an awful lot of hardware incompatibilities and lack of driver support.

And that doesn't even begin to touch on the sofwater issues, freeze ups, reboots, crashes, slow downs, etc that VISTA seems to be causing. Business sectors are refusing IT departments to upgrade, governments are refusing it, schools are refusing it and people are beginning to hoard XP licenses and looking to alternatives. The doomsayers that said that VISTA was going to push people to alternatives are already turning out to be right as Microsoft is beginning to see this as well and is mulling the idea of re-releasing XP.

I laughed at those racks because whoever attempts to purchase and install those, unless they just bought a brand new machine (in which case it would come with Vista installed by default anyway), they are going to most likely have hardware incompatibilities, lack of driver support, etc and thus be unhappy and return the product. Too many returns will eventually cause retailers to stop carrying them on the shelves.

But this isn't too much of a concern for Microsoft since they only accounted for 10% of XP's sales. However since Vista is not selling anywhere near as well as XP, I'm willing to bet they wish that they were selling well at this point and that they had put a little more focus into this segment of the market.

IE, Firefox, Apache, Linux, Mysql, Eclipse, etc. All of these have stolen bread directly from Microsofts mouths but have put money into everyone elses. Mainly because everyone else isn't locked into one platform and is WILLING to develop for a variety of platforms.

Everyone of those gnats is a potential 700 lb gorilla if you get them motivated enough. After all, Microsoft didn't win the desktop due to superior engineering, they won the desktop due to superior MARKETING. That just goes to show that you CAN polish a turd!

Don't get your terminology confused. They dominate the DESKTOP market, not the PC market; they have never dominated the server market though they try to say they do by slanting in in SALES figures. But since OPENBSD, FREEBSD and LINUX don't cost a dime (generally), those stats from Microsoft mean nothing. In fact, stats from Evans Data Corp put Linux on approximately 33% of all corporate servers.

When you consider that Microsoft is still trying to fight SUN, IBM and the old UNIX's to get it's products onto your servers not to mention that they made this push before and it bit them in the ass (can you say Code Red?), this is a huge chunk of the market that just got nabbed right out from under them. And from the same report by Evans Data corp, Linux is in 67% of corporate server rooms, up from 43% only a year ago. Microsoft only wishes it could sell it's product this well.

Microsoft has to do more than sit back and mature. They need to grow up. That means stop being a child and let other people play with your toys/API's. How many times is the Justice dept/EU going to have to slap them before they get the picture?

Why? The 800-lb gorilla doesn't know which of the million gnats gnawing at its flesh to swat to make the rest of them go away. And all the swatting and thrashing it does only makes the swarm more aggressive.

They tried to pass laws against open source which failed because too many enterprises use it. They tried (and continue to try) a FUD campaign which fails because too many people in the IT industry see the benefits vs the costs (both in downtime and in software price). They tried attacking through a separate company (SCO) but that failed and actually created a media storm for Linux and open source. Now with Novell, they are trying bundling with Linux.

Microsoft doesn't know who, where or what to attack. For every foe they take out, another more innovative implementor arises. Could Microsoft have seen Ubuntu taking off? By the time they notice the threat, come up with a plan and act, it's already too late. The lb of flesh has been removed from their corpse. They act out of arrogance and in shows in everything they do as well as this latest campaign.

So how is this different from supporting Linux? All they have to do is create a knowledgeable support staff, good knowledge base and they'll have pretty much the same thing they have for Windows. It's really not that hard once they make the decision as to what distro they are going to support, strike a deal with the distro's maintainers, and maybe even farm out the support to the distros maintainers or a third party. Pretty simple when you think about it.
