  1. Re:Pascal? on The Most Important Obscure Languages? · · Score: 1

I code in Object Pascal using the Delphi/RAD Studio IDE. I can't say that I know how many people are using it but it must be significant. At least enough for Embarcadero to justify it's continued development. They've been on a six month release cycle for several years now and have a new version available today.

  2. The user needs to take a bit of responsibility on Why Gmail Has Better Security Than Your Bank · · Score: 1

It seems to me that, unless the bank REQUIRES use of short, all-alphabetical, all lower-case passwords, it's not really the bank that is insecure. Instead, it's how the individual is using the available security which is insecure.

  3. Only for the first year on Microsoft Reveals Windows 10 Will Be a Free Upgrade · · Score: 2

Did M$ actually say the OS would become a subscription model? Perhaps saying it would only be free for the first year simply means that if you wait longer than a year to upgrade, it will cost you. I could see them doing this to encourage a lot of early adopters

Trying to implement a subscription-based OS would be akin to their attempts to create a a walled garden like they did with Windows RT. Stupid. Hopefully they learned from their experiences with RT...

While not free, their academic volume pricing is up to 97% less that commercial list price.

BTW - I work for a company that is currently using Delphi XE4 and will be migrating to XE5 (just released) after verifying it's stability with our existing code base. Guess we're gonna hold out a bit longer... :)

If you're gonna to knock my favorite IDE, could you at least try and get your facts right? Delphi 1 didn't ship until 1995

    So there! ;)

  6. Applies to hands-free phones, are you sure? on NTSB Recommends Cell Phone Ban For Drivers · · Score: 1

I can't get to the referenced ntsb.gov page but the CNN article states just the opposite. The last line in CNN's article reads: "It would not apply to hand-free devices or to passengers."

  8. Remember Borlands "No Nonsense License Agreement"? on Doctorow Suggests Simple EULA Solution · · Score: 2, Interesting

Reminds me of Borland's old software license agreement from the '80s.

"You must treat this software just like a book...

    <snip/>

By saying "just like a book," Borland means, for example, that this
software may be used by any number of people, and may be freely moved
from one computer location to another, so long as there is no
possibility of it being used at one location while it's being used at
another or on a computer network by more than one user at one
location. Just like a book can't be read by two different people in
two different places at the same time, neither can the software be
used by two different people in two different places at the same time."
