    The security you are thinking of is a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stateful_firewall, which is a side effect of NAT but can be implemented independently of NAT.

    How is it (or rather smart phones in general) not? It's at least as world changing as the internet itself.

    Being able to access nearly any piece of human knowledge whether I'm standing in line at the grocery store or out camping in the woods is pretty fucking amazing to me.

    Oops, I wasn't thinking about the corporate side of computer systems.

    I work at an ISP/computer repair shop so we deal with a lot of home computers which aren't as amenable to the imaging solution.

    • Find installation discs for all your programs
    • Windows updates
    • Remember where the license keys are for your programs.

    • Realize that you forgot to back up some important file you had in a folder somewhere.

    I build mesh networks for a living and for fun (use meraki at work, open-mesh at home) and I have not seen the horrible performance you've described.

    That's assuming the whole mesh network is fed with only one uplink. Add a few more in various places and performance will improve.

    open-mesh.com uses code built from http://www.open-mesh.org/ which is an open project.

    What I like about open-mesh.com is that they have 802.11n mesh units for cheap and a fairly usable dashboard to control it all.

    A teacher of mine who was left-handed told me that when she was girl in Catholic school attempting to write with her left hand would earn her a slap on the hand from a nun's ruler.
    They forced her to write with her right hand because using the left one was "wrong and unnatural". It just seemed similar.
