  1. Cape Boy on RF Connector Chess Set · · Score: 5, Funny

*IF* I ever did let my son wear a cape (see article pictures), I certainly wouldn't plaster his picture up on the internet. How bad is that kid going to feel in 10 years when his friends google him and find that picture. Not only will be be labeled a chess geek, but he'll be cape boy forever. Sad.

The problem is that mac os x uses display technology that is not easily accelerated by current graphics cards. A lot of screen drawing is done with vectors and bezier curves that are closer to the type of acceleration that a 3d card provides and not a 2d card. However, until recently, 3d cards weren't easily made to run custom routines. You had to rely on a set of standard calls. The geforce 3 changed this. I'm sure once those drivers mature, os x will really shine. On a side note, I run os x every day on a powerbook G4. While I wouldn't call the us fast, it is very usalbe. 10.1 will only improve on this.

I was using an old mac for a while with ipnetrouter. The software is pretty full featured although I think it costs $50. I eventually got sick of the noise and electricity and ended up moving to a link-sys. Its a pretty decent unit, but does lack some of the features I've seen on the d-link routers that cost about 10-20 less. It also works nicely with my apple airport that serves macs, windows and linux machines in my house. I'm eventually trying to phase out all the ethernet in my house and I'll go wireless. Its a much less cluttered solution.

I believe they are debating the merrits of the vergins in the castle, with some characters thinking it is no more than a sad attempt to make some "pusy" jokes. Not really all that funny.

However, this support has alwasy been based no TIVO not hurting the industry. This is why tivo doens't have a commercial skip. It takes away from advertising that tv networks depend on. I'm sure once tv networks start seeing shows on the net sans ads, things are going to change- TIVO will crack down on the community and a lot of useful stuff will get shut down. I just graduated with a computer engineering degree and I struggled with this decision for four years. Basically, my advice is this: Do whatever you think is going to make you the happiest. Computer engineers seem to get paid a bit more out of the gate, but most computer engineering places aren't as fun. The arugement that my professors used was to go into comptuer engineering and you can do computer science or computer engineering when you are done. I don't think that is the best arguement though. If you aren't going to be a computer engineer, you really don't need to know all that stuff. Also, you do learn a lot of computer science on the way to a computer engineering degree, but in my opinion, its not enough. Go with what you love.

Thirdly, who plays just a game and then leaves the computer. I'm always surfing or checking my email. With this, I would have to boot up once to play the game, then again after that was all done. Here is some more info from Maccentral

the G4 processor, which has a sustained speed of 1 gigaflops and a peak speed of 4 gigaflops.
Apple's new systems are available in 400 Mhz, 450 Mhz, 500 Mhz speeds. The 500 Mhz version will include a DVD-RAM drive, which can record several gigs of data to a CD-sized disk.
The 400 Mhz system will be priced at $1599, the 450 Mhz system at $2499, the 500 Mhz at $3,499.
Apple will be immediately shipping the 400 Mhz system, with the other two systems shipping in a "few weeks."
Jobs said that the new systems will ship with a Photoshop plug-in that will recognize the G4 processor.
In a head-to-head race against a Pentium III system, the PowerMac G4 handily blew away the Pentium III system, rendering a scene with Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story more than twice as fast as the Pentium machine, which was running at 600 Mhz.
The next demo tested memory bandwidth. Again facing the fastest Pentium III currently available, the PowerMac G4 crushed the Pentium system.
Next came a QuickTime encoding demo, where the trailer for the James Bond movie was compressed in real time on the PowerMac G4, but took about twice as long on the Pentium system. In fact, the PowerMac G4 could actually compress the James Bond movie and play it back before the Pentium system could encode the clip.
A college professor then took the reins to demonstrate the supercomputer capabilities of the G4.He demonstrated the popular SETI@Home project, where a G4 was able to process in 6 hours the same amount of information that a Pentium III could process in 25 hours.
To demonstrate encryption speed, a 1000 bit encryption key was decoded on both a G4 and G3, where the G4 was almost seven times faster. Standard cryptography applications run at 3 to 8 times the speed of Pentium III systems, according to the professor.
The last demo showed actual data from the Mars Pathfinder mission. A G4 and a Pentium II system set up head-to-head showed the rendering of data from a probe flying through a valley on Mars. The G4 played like a movie, while the Pentium III played more like a slide-show.

You can't go around threatening other companies like that and expect total cooperation. The funniest line is by far:

But these were no ordinary lawyers. They had a second whole computer system ready to press their case.

Wow, those are some bold statements. The funny thing is that I know a ton of places to get the VCD. In fact, all of the places I know of have not been shut down or aproached by lawyers. And just wait until the new semester starts. This VCD stuff is going to be huge. And I was the industy I'd be really worried. Sure the quality isn't great but it is good enough.
