Try asking http://icculus.org/~icculus/. He used to work for the Linux game publisher Loki and currently works porting games to Linux/OS X. He has worked on some big time titles such as UT2k4, Postal 2 and ArmyOps. He should be able to help you or point you to someone who can.
Man, thats really scary now that they are trying to excercise that kind of control. I wonder if international google also lifted the links, since they arent under DMCA control.
No, it wouldn't. Gentoo uses livecd's to get you into the "install environment". The gentoo install process is alot more interactive then any other distro's installer. We chose this method of installing because you need a minimal GNU environment to compile and install everything. You could boot it on an imac and in theory set up a ramdisk and everything else, but I think the asker was clear in what his intentions/needs were.
This isnt just simply any oddball posting up a press release. It is very beneficial to let the community know about large announcemnts. Personally, I think this is fabulous!! Its about time we had a codec like this with all the stupid restrictions.
I actually always wondered about this. Really interesting, although I guessed that there would be a rapid rate of decay due to the nature of "information." Things get old and pass with time. An interesting application of this would be to keep records over a number of decades and figure out the average life/revival span of certain trends.
You know, If there was one company that I thought would be immune to M$, AMD was it. Now the only saving grace for all that is good in this world may be to be AOL after all. I know I'm gonna start a flame war but AOL is the biggest competitor M$ has and they are usong Mozilla now!!;-)
This is a problem I've hit before. Unfortunately the open source community hasnt produced any Flash development tools since many users of OSS are anti-flash. This is mainly due to the fact that no matter how glitzy, Flash is still not supported by the W3C as an accepted internet standard. Plus PHP works wonders with graphics. Nevertheless, maybe it's time we asked Macromedia to help us out??
Hey I had to do the same thing about 2 years back. After scouring the net and searching other places I realized that I had the OReilly Learning the Unix Operating System. Definately the most invaluable resource you have for teaching them basic directory structure and the most commonly used commands, plus use of VI and EMACS. The Oreilly Bash book is also very good for beginning shell usage/scripts.
I would have to agree that if linux were adopted there than it would be the most excellent thing to ever happen. However, take into perspective the fact that many people would be pissed at the fact that they couldnt run kazaa or some other of their favorite programs. I mean as hard as it is to say for me, windows is more user friendly than linux. My experiences with with trying to "convert" people to linux is this:
1. In the beginning they might love it because its all free
2. Then after a while people get pissed that they cant run some of their favorite programs
3. For a novice with no previous training everything is really hard to configure.
4. For kids the learning curve might suck.
5. Lets face it, bottom line, linux has zero plug and play support. PnP, or some other modularized form of it is a good thing when its done right. Hardware support is a big issue.
I think the best way to learn how X, for example works would be to use the wrox book on X Window programming and then see how that works and move from there. O'reilly also recently released a book about GUIs under the Mac platform. Also, does anyone know how microsoft does there GUI stuff? Gnome is great and all but it just seems to me that the windoes GUI is much better than gnome/kde. I dont want to start a war so i'll say that I'm a linux user nonetheless, but there must be a better way than X windows.
I've been using Progeny since beta 2 on my Dell Inspiron 5000e. Yes you heard right, Dell Insipron 5000e. I tried every distro out there and sent bug reports to every company. There was a problem with X compatability with my Video Chipset. Progeny was the only company that gave a damn to work with me on fixing the bug with their distro. Frankly, I'm disappointed at Red Hat. BTW, thanks ian and branden from progeny for giving a damn to help users. PROGENY KICKS SOME SERIOUS ASS, ESPECIALLY WITH HELIX GNOME!
Hey Guys,
Just think about it for one second. Nick Peterly is right. If all the distributors got together and decided to create a common base installation which was always easy to upgrade, it would do wonders for linux. SO many more people would adopt it as a platform since the frustration that often goes woth updating your OS would be negligible. I set up and maintain servers running red hat and sometimes upgrading is such a pain. With apt-get its so easy. If only debian or progeny would clean up their installs. There is no reason for debian users to have ulcers while red hat and mandrake can set up such a clean, easy install system. I know debian is striving to be the Professional's Linux Distro but come on, no matter how good the OS is you cant use it if you cant install it.

There is a huge rally being planned to take place in front of SCO headquarters. SourceRally. They shut down their site as part of the protest as well.

And you plan on having kids?? Yellow #5 is spermicidal and stunts growth!

They had the correct model. Perhaps it wont be so bad-if they have a lifetime/yearly option.

Just sticking in my 2 cents.
