  1. Since 1999 on Debian NetBSD · · Score: 2, Informative

If you check out the mailing list archives, you can see the project has been ongoing (or at least discussed) since May 1999. It just until now to get it to the point where it actually sort of works.

  2. Everybody spies on everybody on USA Busted Trying to Bug China's Presidential 767 · · Score: 3, Interesting

This is not suprising: the US spies on everyone, including allies (yes, even Britain.) (In fact, I saw a documentary the other day about how we bugged the Xerox machine at the Soviet embassy, and got snapshots of all their documents for years.) So while it may be a little embarrassing to get caught, it isn't a revelation. China shouldn't take it personally--we spy on everyone.

Of course, that doesn't mean spying is moral or ethical--that is another discussion entirely.

  3. Re:You want Poser Linux, of course! on Red Hat 7.2 Released · · Score: 1

I'm not really an expert, but here's the general feeling I've picked up:

Mandrake is an easy distribution to install, and looks pretty nice, although it is sometimes a bit out of date (i.e., all the newest bells and whistles won't be there.) I've installed and used Mandrake, but I like Red Hat better.

Red Hat is of course the most popular distribution, and I recommend it.

Slackware is a popular distribution among advanced users, but probably isn't a good idea for beginners.

Oh, and you are going to need to learn how to use a command line terminal. There's just no getting around it. It's actually one of the most useful tools I've found. When I run Windows (which is too often now; I need MS Office and MS Visual Studio for my university classes) I feel lost and helpless without it.

  4. Stop flying too? on Anthrax To Kill Snail Mail · · Score: 1

Email will replace snail mail when buses and trains replace flying.

It's not going to happen. Email is good for many things, such as personal communication, but it is not good for anything official. I can send a casual letter to my friends with email, but I can't sign a contract and send it back by email. Bits and bytes on a computer are great for transmitting information, but too often legal reasons demand you have something on paper.

  6. No, not religion on Jedi Knight Now (Not) Officially a Religion · · Score: 2, Insightful

I've seen the Star Wars movies, and read a great number of the "expanded universe" books. Although there are some inconsistencies in the details as presented by different authors, the best I can make out is that using the Force and being a Jedi Knight is not a religion; it is more like a philosophy or a profession. The Force is simply there to be used--it is not some sort of God to be worshipped. So you could be a Jedi Knight, use the Force, and be a devout .

Of course, I could be entirely wrong.

Please remember, the life without parole is the maximum punishment, not the minimum. Only the most egregious offenders will get life without parole. Script kiddies will probably still get off with a slap on the wrist.

  8. Re:This is a moral outrage! on Yahoo! To Start Selling Porn · · Score: 1

I agree mostly with Anne Marie, with only a few exceptions. A boycott of Yahoo! is not necessary or desirable--it will not make a significant impact on Yahoo!, and there is no need to stop using one of the best (in my opinion) portals on the web. What we should boycott is pornography. >>Pornography is indistinguishable from rape. Come now. Surely you cannot expect us to believe pornography is equivalent to rape?
