  1. compatibility between windowmanagers.. on Controversial Cosmologist Fred Hoyle Dies At 86 · · Score: 0, Offtopic

Im currently in the process of moving my private network to Linux. The only real experince i have with unixes, is Ive used it a bit in my job as a programmer(i just quit my job, to complete my Bachlor in comp. Science(will take a while, ive only got the first two semesters, which ive got through another Danish comp. education)), but it was mostly Java work. Hence i coded a server on the system, not really digging into anything really OS related issues(the only REAL hands on expirence I got from it, was setting up java+tomcat on a unixbox). And on my personal network, Ive just completet setting(/reading :o) up the network related stuff. So i ping the world, u know. And Ive really havent gotten to study the X architecture yet. So, I have a question...

Is all windowmanagers compatible through X or what? The main reason im shifting to 100% *nix enviroment is that I really dig the though of software being open(and FREE). And I would like to get involved in some OpenSource project down the road, but will one have to port a GUI between n different windowhandlers?

I would like to think that you just use some sort of std. X interface, that all the windowhandlers can implement. But i also know that Gnome uses all sorts of custom stuff, glib or something right?

"The catch of "Truform" however is that it has the ability to make 3D-objects look much more realistic while carrying the risk of creating artifacts (not every flat surface wants to be curved)."

I really think that ATI should dig into this problem, since it shouldnt be too hard to solve. Seriusly, NEWTEK have implemented this feature in Lightwave 3D since v. 4.0 or something (4.0, think AMIGA software, thats how old). And it works like a charm, as long as the polygons are flat(imagine a poly with points at 1.0.0 , 0.1.0 and -1.0.0 , this is flat. If you modified it to: 1.0.-1, 0.1.0 and -1.0.1 , it would be VERY bend out of shape, and wouldnt meta-truform very well .o)

If TOM have found artifacts, its likely that some vertex shader is to blaime. Which, easily could screw up the flatness of the polygon.

If one chooses DX8.1, the GeForce3 will just not have hardware support for pixelshaders anymore. And DX will automatically implement this through software instead, this is the way DX ALLWAYS have worked(doing stuff thats not supported in 3DHardware on the main CPU).
MAny people will use the shaders, without ANY HW support. I for example, use a Geforce-2 to play MaxPayne, which works great. Even the PShaders, and thats without ANY support for PShaders. My nifthy ATHLON 1000 does em for me.
But Offcource, some will could argue that the Geforce-3 is so important that it would be smarter to use 8.0 over 8.1 , so the GF3 would still have HW support for the PShaders. But Seriusly, thats like saying DX8 is the last DX. Meaning, newer cards will offcource support the newest version of DX(8.1? :o).

Ballew from Nvidia also seems to be "reaching" a bit, and i quote from the article: "They're claiming that six textures is better. It'll only be better if it's faster."

It would be extremely naive of Ballew to belive(/hope?) that ATI are such fools of creating DSP that they would be around tre times less effecient, thats like saying. "We are the only ones who can do math".

Aaaand one last Ballew quote: "It's hard to battle a paper spec"
Yes indeed, thats what ATI and Nintedo has been shouting out VERY loud in the games industri the last months. About a certain (NVIDIA) powered XBOX (125M+ lit-polygons? YEEEAH RIGHT!!)

PS. A newer (hence Radion2) SHOULD be better/smarter/more-hitech that a older (hence Geforce3) chip.

There a guy who lives of creating games implies that ports are rushed, meaning that if a system is way more effective. Like the PS2 is over the DC, the PS2 developers just used the CPU and left the Emotionengine, and therefore the VU1+VU2 Vector units alone. This is not the way of creating ports that surpass the originals by far.

What I meant with the crasy comparisons of consoles, was that i asked for a example of a ported game. And i just meant that the consoles should be relatively equal in generation. So no examples of SNES to N64 ports(since a PS2-GC is relatively close in specs, the SNES/N64 are not). And to support my statement of ports being close in apperence, heres a quote of the Crazy Taxi preview for GameCube at IGN:

The GameCube version of the game is expected to look just as good as the Dreamcast original, if not better".

Now, you could belive that the "if not better part", meant that the cars have 5000 extra polyfons and the game is really upgaded to fit the GC. I can only ask, when? When have this happend in the past? And but seriusly, how much differnce isthere between the PS2 and the DC versions? I have both maschines, and have played the games on both maschines. And this port, like most other Ive played are relatively alike, in fact, I have owned a: Megadrive(genesis in US?), SNES, SATURN, PSX, N64, DC and a PS2(soon to come a GameCube to). And Ive played quite a few "ports" through the years, and to my experince. VERY few of them, in my oppinion, are remarkably different. If you find this lame just give a example of a PORT then, and remember games like the Resident Evil and Toom Raider on the DC arent ports, they have been developed specifially for the DC.
And the ports being developed for the GameCube right now, are reported very alike to the originals(And if you check out the GameCube Phantasy Star Online shots, they differ VERY little from the DC version).

And on a closing note, Im just going to make one last comment. You write in your reply that: "Lastly, the PS2 and GAMECUBE are not very simular at all. One is a home entertainment system, while the other is a thoroughbred game system".
It seems like you think that the GameCube is a FAR more powerfull system than the PS2? Check out theGameCube Vs. PS2, they(IGN CUBE, BTW so you cant say they are biased or anything) compare the two consoles and interview Naugthy Dog and Bioware. Which have games in development on both consoles, one leaning to PS2 and one leaning to GC as the most powerfull. But youll get the picture, the maschines, AS gameconsoles, are VERY close in spec.

I cant think of one, in most cases the canges are minor.
An example of this could be the playable version of Phantasy Star:Online SEGA had running on the GameCube at this years E3, it is almost idential to the DC version. Eventhough the GameCube is a MUCH more powerfull maschine than the DC, why? MONEY.. Theres more profit to be made just making a little "Special Edition" where they use the new filtering, largertextures, better AA but keep the models.
