  1. Non-Programmable RPN for Testing? on HP Releases New RPN Scientific Calculator · · Score: 1

Does anyone know of a usable RPN calculator which isn't programmable?

I will be taking a series of professional examinations which allow a calculator, but it cannot be programmable which nixes my beloved 32SII. This is also an issue for many other standardized tests.

    Thanks for any help!

  2. Why did NASA name the rock after Windows? on Mars Rock Supports Cross-Seeding Theory · · Score: 1

"Bounce" is clearly a reference to our least favorite operating system.

Didn't Slashdot just request a few rocks named after Linux ("Name a rock, 'Tux'" in comments)?

Why is "geek-oriented" NASA dissing us so bad?

  3. Re:A bomb? What are you giving him a bomb for? on Always Look on the Bright Side of Life · · Score: 5, Interesting

For those who can't wait, there's an interview with Eric Idle [RealPlayer Audio] from yesterday's "Which Way, L.A.?" program on KCRW. Apparently, the Pythons want to cash in on the furor over "Passion of the Christ." In the interview, Eric claims he's a "lapsed anti-Catholic" and an "Alzhimer's agnostic" - great stuff!

  4. Re:Viewsonic on Shopping for a New Monitor? · · Score: 1

We have about 150 19" and 20" monitors at the architecture firm where I work: The 1995-vintage Viewsonic 20G's are real workhorses. They're beginning to fail now, but they've lasted. On the other hand, the 1997-vintage Viewsonic G800's are complete crap and always have been. They're heavy, have a small viewable area, and they're fuzzy!

More recently, we've had good luck with the Dell-branded monitors (don't know who mfg's them) including the M990's, M991's and one gorgeous 1600HS (trinitron). We've got ~20 and no problems.

We also have some NEC FE950+BK's which are quite reasonable (flat-glass CRT).

TIP 2: Get your glass block rep to drop off some 12"x12"x4" glass block samples - they're perfect monitor stands!

TIP 3: If you're in Southern California, remember that Viewsonic is conveniently located in Walnut/City of Industry.

  5. Space Elevator Failure Danger on Highlift Systems' Space Elevator In The News Again · · Score: 1

So, I'm remembering a fairly horrific description of a space elevator failure in Kim Stanley Robinson's "RGB Mars" books ("Green" I think...).

The gist of it was that the cable was broken, and wrapped itself around Mars (faster and faster). At the end, the impact was producing as much energy as an atomic device.

Now perhaps Earth's deeper and thicker atmosphere make things different here, but as I recall, Earth's gravity and the scale of an earth space elevator would also be larger...

Just wondering. Can a physics guru help?

  6. Re:When can I get custom alarmtones for my car ala on Ring Tones Will Save the Music Industry · · Score: 1

Ironically, Monty Python chose The Liberty Bell (by John Philip Sousa) because it was an old BBC(?) recording which had entered the public domain! Talk about a great example of original, creative derivative work...

  7. Secret Identity of "W" on Ask Alton Brown How Food+Heat=Cooking · · Score: 1

My wife and I continue to be curious about "W," Good Eats' cooking device maven. Most of your guests are identified, but she remains strangely anonymous. Could it be that "W" stands for "wife"?

Oops, I zagged when I should have .sigged.
