    Yup, that's because gforge.org just hosts the GForge project itself - it doesn't host other folks' projects. Check out that "list of GForge sites" link in the parent post; lots of people and lots of projects are out there using GForge.

    The big deal about this particular release was that the source code for this large DARPA-sponsored project is now accessible for browsing or for checking out with anonymous CVS.

    The problem is that it's difficult to quantify the contribution of a stay-at-home Mom to her childrens' education, welfare, development, etc. It's very significant; it's just difficult to measure with numbers. "Achievement" means different things to different people.

    One of the most memorable parts of that evening was when my Linux NFS [Network File System] server died, to the point that the console seemed completely dead (the load of all those Doom WAD files obviously got to it). I was about to press reset when Linus stepped in and said he wanted to work out why it had crashed, so he could fix it. I then watched in complete amazement as Linus exploited a remote file truncation bug he knew about in the NFS server I was running which allowed him to peek into the proc filesystem on the apparently dead server and work out enough to find the bug. Up till then I had considered myself to be a pretty good programmer, and quite good at debugging system crashes, but that incident taught me that I would always be an also-ran who just isn't in the same league as
    people like Linus.

    You can do that using SOAP. Set up a SOAP service using NuSOAP that exports whatever operations you want, then use a Java Swing client that uses Axis to talk to the server. Or you can just use a Ruby command line script on the client. You can use complex types, faults, whatever.

    We do this on GForge; it's not a problem.

    From the Verizon site article:

    "Prior to ICANN's October 3 directive to shut down the service, Site Finder had
    been used more than 48 million times by Internet users to get where they want to go online."

    "...has been used more than 48 million times...". Makes it sound like folks are eagerly flocking to the Verizon web site to 'use' this service. It's as if the highway administration shut down all lanes of I-95 and then celebrated the increased HOV usage.

    It works quite well; I was able to convert most of my data with it.
