  1. US Supreme Court Uses WordPerfect on U.S. Justice Dept. Chooses Corel over Microsoft · · Score: 1

Has sanity finally set in, or is this just a blip in Microsoft's dominance in controlling government software decisions?
Neither. The legal community uses WordPerfect because the standard was set by the US Supreme Court which uses WordPerfect exclusively and issues all of its decisions in WordPerfect. Most of the US State Supreme Courts have followed suit. The lawyers just want to use what the courts use.

A great Go variant that is easy to learn yet challenging for years is Pente. Based on Go-moku and played on a Go board, the object is to be the first get 5 stones in a row. It was out-of-print for a couple of years, but is now made by Winning Moves

I guess I have Memphis Networkx to thank for Time Warner pricing Business Class Cable (3Mb down/768Kb up) at $100/mo. And none of these silly Comcast-like monthly usage quotas.

they love giving out free samples of the latest high commission pharmaceutical to get you hooked on the latest advancements in allergy fighting.

Right, because that pharmaceutical company has a monopoly on the manufacture and distribution of that drug, so once you are hooked, the money flows directly into their pockets.

Street drugs can be purchased from any on-the-corner dealer, notwithstanding the strongarm efforts of street gangs to obtain and maintain positions as the monopolistic supplier. There is no incentive for the illicit drug dealer to give out free samples.

In the US, however, tuition does not cover the true cost of a degree. Considerable amounts of state and federal dollars are needed to keep institutions of higher education afloat.

The only way we can have a profitable education industry is to charge higher tuition to foreign students, as citizens are unlikely to stand for tuition levels needed to cover education costs.

So, if you have a bad month getting the movies you want, you'll have a good month the next time, then bad, then good.

Not so. I will still get (and watch) the same number of movies in a bad month, but the movies sent to me will be those lower down in my queue.

So a bad month gives me just as many movies, but I don't get the benefit of either seeing the movies I really want or getting a higher priority the next month.

This would only be fair if I were to cut back on the number of rentals when they reduce my priority. Doesn't sound like a service I am willing to stick with and pay for in the long run.

You paid for it, it's yours, and you should be allowed to do whatever you want with it.

Exactly...which is why TiVo should change their business model if they want to keep customers out of their boxes. My cable provider supplies a digital box as part of my monthly fee. They own the box and can easily justify any service agreement clauses keeping me from fiddling with it.

If TiVo really wants to retain control over the hardware, they need to retain ownership of it.
