  1. Re:Slowing down on Blind Man Test Drives Google's Autonomous Car · · Score: 1

Also, the car has much lower reaction times. So in some situations, it doen't really need to slow down, it will react immediatly if needed, whereas a human driver will need to slow down to make room for slower refelexes.

THAT to me, is a concern, because the car has to operate on the same road along with other cars driven by lower-reflexive humans. If this car reacts in a split second and switches to the lane next, and the car behind it in the next lane doesn't, that would still be a problem.

But then again, this seems such a basic usecase that may be Google has already factored in all such possibilities.

Google's stock Android doesn't let you uninstall Facebook, Twitter, Amazon MP3 and even Google Books. I'm talking Ginger Bread on Nexus One - so it's not imposed by any carrier. It gets into some weird situations as well - since I'm in India and currently Google Books is not available for India, it won't let me install any updates, but it still shows me update notifications, and would not let me uninstall the app. It sucks, especially since app storage is really small and precious on these old phones.

And run Google inside Chrome for the logged in uses (mail, reader and iGoogle mostly). So, no like or +1 buttons for me.

So equating China which acceeded to the NPT but still supplied Nukes to Pakistan in an open violation of its commitments is stupidity at best.

You're right. I think the main difference between why the invite system worked for gmail and not so well for G+ is simply because an email does not require you to have your friends be subscribers to the same system. So whoever got the service could use it fully and since there was craze to get the account, people who got it were able to use it. Where as for Google Wave and Google Plus, they are not really usable unless all the people are on the same platform. So if I have an account, but my friends don't - I simply can't use it and with passage of time, my interest dies out. That's why even when there is a lot of scrambling for the accounts initially, the activity tapered down in both (at least from what I can see). And without people using it regularly, it dies down.

Just for completeness sake - I don't deny gmail was head and shoulders above other webmail offerings at the time and that definitely contributed to its success, not just the artificial scarcity of the invite system. Google Plus and Wave are good products too, but the invite system and inertia of masses are killing / have killed them.

Umm...many companies (especially in the software/web domain) go IPO because the employees want their big pay-day and early investors want to cash out. It does not necessarily mean they NEED the cash infusion. So they may or may not have a plan for spending the IPO proceeds. Their "plan" could be as generic as "building a war chest for future acquisitions".

Serious question - not a troll. Do you really think Google+ is succeeding? Here is my personal experience FWIW. I have created Google+ account in the first couple of days, sent out invites to my friends and family (at least the ones I really wanted to keep in touch) and everyone was very eager. There used to be so much activity that I thought it's the end of my Facebook usage. Couple of weeks later, it all started dwindling. Now the only updates I see on G+ are the ones I make and the ones posted by my friends who are in Google. Very few outside Google seem to be checking it, let alone post anything. It's probably just inertia and nothing on the quality of the product, but G+, at least in my social circles, does not seem to have attained the escape velocity and unless something changes, is bound to fail.
