  1. Random Benchmark on MSN Search Roundup · · Score: 1

    Hi,

i started a personal random benchmark:

Assume i want to seach for "Jabber", "Nokia 6310i"
and "Simpsons". I tested the german version of both Google and MSN search.

    Jabber:
    MSN: Jabber.org on Rank 2
Google: Jabber.org not even on first page

    1:0 for MSN

    Nokia 6310i:
Nokia 6310i Product Page on rank 2
Nokia 6310i Product Page on rank 2

    1:1

    Simpsons:
MSN: Official US Simpsons side on rank 1
Google: Official US Simpsons side not even on first page

    2:1 for MSN

Of course this is not a representative result, but interesting anyway.

  2. GPS instead of camera or RFID on Smart Cars Tell You About Road Signs · · Score: 1

    Hi,

here in germany a high percentage of new cars are equipped with GPS. Wouldn't it be the most easiest and reliable solution to have a database of traffic signs on DVD, together with an update over GPRS or UMTS telephony?

  3. Brightening the edges on Seamless Video Walls · · Score: 1

    Hi,

what makes you realize that there are edges behind the lenses, is the fact, that the picture is somewhat darker in that areas. But the graphic driver has to be patched anyway. I wonder whether it isn't possible to eliminate the darkness by simply brightening the picture in the areas where the lenses are used.

  4. Game Suggestions? Super Mario? on New Gameboy Announced · · Score: 1

    Hi,

Cool! The black one is the GBA I will buy when it ships in Germany :-)

Ten years ago(?) I was addicted to "Super Mario World" and "Tetris" on my little brother's GB, which was one of the first ones. I'm not up-to-date with the latest GBA-games. Are the new "Super Mario"-Versions comparable to the first versions on the classic GB (because a sequel is not always better)? Is there a "Super Mario Kart"-style game?

  6. OpenSource for german schools on German Elections Go Open Source · · Score: 2, Informative

    Hi,

my wife is a teacher of a german primary school and there she is a representative for new technologies. So I get all the info-material the school gets from our government for consulting issues ;-)

And, i'm impressed of the OpenSource-activities they do for german schools. For example they support the opensource school-server project of the (IMHO best) german computer magazine c't and have a detailed brochure about the use of open-source software.

If you boycott their products the bosses will think that everyone is copying and not willing to buy the CDs.

If you want to tell them that you don't want the copy protection buy copy protected CDs and bring them back into the stores 2 days later because they are not standard compliant.

I think in the long term this definitely will help.

  10. Peer to Peer slashdot? on Announcing Slashdot Subscriptions · · Score: 1

    Hi,

what you are doing is the same as making open-source programmers pay for their own code. In my opinion people will stop (meta-)moderating if they have to pay for the stuff.

Here is my solution to minimize bandwidth-costs: How about a P2P-Version of Slashdot where the data is replicated to Proxy-Servers? Then you're still able to read slashdot with your well-known browser but everyone's the server :-) For your administration costs you can still use banner ads as long as they are not annoying.
