  1. It was a bloody stupid question. on Linux DVD Player on a Bootable CD? · · Score: 1, Flamebait

Why on earth would anyone build a PC to do something a piece of hardware can do cheaper and better? There's absolutely no point. If you want to do something "hacky", for fun, at least have it be something *useful*!

  2. Getting karma's pretty easy. on When Microbes Ate the Ocean · · Score: -1, Offtopic
A few months back, this account was bitchslapped for some reason or other. Nobody ever explained why. My precious karma went down to -5 (from 45).

Within a week, I was back posting at +2 with a karma of something like 35. I've found that, the more agreeable you are on slashdot (and the earlier you post), the more karma you get.

    Tips?

    • Post early - this ensures people will see your post, as most people use threaded/earliest posts first.
    • Shorter posts are better - people hate reading really long-ass posts (this one is already starting to drag on.) The more succinct you are, the more likely people are to read your post. As long as you say one interesting thing in it, you'll get modded up.
    • moderators love links - always include some relevant link, if you can. People love cross-references on slashdot
    • Say something funny, even if you're a retard - some of the moderators on slashdot have terrible senses of humor and find anything funny. Take advantage of this! A +3 Funny is still 1 or 2 karma points.
    • Ride +5 posts - if someone else says something insightful, take advantage of it. Try and get people to click on your comments, because most people have their accounts set up to display the full text of high-rated comments.

      • Anyone else have any suggestions? This is just stuff I've experienced.

Basically, what Philips wants to do is prevent you from watching something you've recorded on one device in your home in another room (presumably on another device) in your home. In the analog world, this is tantamount to shooting you if you're caught carrying a VHS tape from one VCR to another.

When all's said and done, it's just a machine, designed to perform certain tasks efficiently. Personally, I find OS X slow and too full of eye-candy. I find Windows XP to be the same way. Hopefully, this isn't the start of a trend.

  14. Two DAYS? what crack are you smoking? on Rio Riot and Lyra Personal Jukebox · · Score: 4, Informative

Let's see. USB is 12 megabits per second. Let's say that's 1 megabyte per second.

Now, 20 gigabytes is 20,000 megabytes. So it'd take 20,000 seconds to fill the hard drive in the Riot. How long is 20,000 seconds? Well, let's do some math here.

There are 60 seconds in a minute, and 60 minutes in an hour. That makes 3600 seconds in an hour. 3600 goes into 20,000 roughly 5 times.

So it'd take about 5 HOURS to fill the thing, not TWO DAYS! Let's get our math straight first before we make declarative statements about the product.
