    Various subtle design enhancements have gone into the 1200 over the past 20 years. The only reason most people don't know is because there are so damned many of the ancient ones still working, I imagine. At any rate, the electronics inside the thing have changed a lot.

    There's a place in Boston that'll do it for $40 per dub plate. Dub plates don't last as long as records, though. (5 plays, I've heard, before the quality starts to go to hell, but that number seems a *tad* low.)

    Well, I can scratch pretty well. I've heard others that are absolutely incredible though. Quick response time is critical. I hope this program/hardware can keep up.

    Not sure what the difference would be, but when I decided I liked the fonts on the SGI at work, I simply tarred the directory up, FTPed it to my personal machine at home, untarred it, and did the normal X font-adding procedure, followed by xset fp rehash. They were immediately available to me.

    I haven't tried this with my solaris box. Maybe I should.

    It took me like 30 minutes to hack together an awk/perl/sed/etc script with which I can search by track name, file size, case-sensitive or no, and I can do it on a per-disc basis. Once you get up around 20 CDs full of MP3s, these things become necessary. (I'm up to 25. . . :)

    Exploiting Open Source software like Apache and then being "generous" enough to open some tiny portions of their new OS in some half-hearted attempt to look like some sort of longtime friend. Wow gee thanks! So, what's up with not allowing the Xanim people to even distribute a binary codec of a more recent, and, maybe, for once, useable, Quicktime? Oh, I see. You get nothing out of it.

    I guess as long as it's making Apple money, Open Source is great.

    At least Microsoft has the decency to just shun us outright.

    ...and it's a purple box 'stead of a beige one. Though I might be getting a nice blue one too with a 200 MHz IP22 in it. (It went off lease at work. SGI forgot to come get it. Oops!)

    I still think nothing can touch an IPX-type Sparc case in terms of simplicity and looks though.
