I think this is the first time Cringley is on to something. What he is onto isn't this Apple buying Adobe thing though. Its the following quote from the article stub:

Steve wants Windows applications to run like crazy on his hybrid platform but to look like crap. In his heart of hearts, he'd still like to beat Microsoft on the merits, not just by leveraging some clever loophole.

OS X running Windows apps in ugly gray, thats what he is onto. Its coming.

  9. Limited to ASM? on Ambidextrous Linux/Windows Virus · · Score: 2, Insightful

"Writing a cross-platform worm is difficult because it limits you to functions that are available on both operating systems," Ullrich said. "You have to also code the virus in assembly to make it work without relying on any OS-specific function," he said.

This isn't actually quite true, it is merely one way of doing so. You could easily write a virus that uses tons of API and platform specific stuff, but contains a generic detection mechanism at the beginning of its execution and then forks between two pieces of code. One portion contains code specific to Windows and another code specific to Linux. Apart from the generic platform discovery code upon execution it would be like any other platform specific virus. I'm actually surprized this is the first, at least publicized, detection of such a virus.

Negotiations with the DIX management are ongoing, but the current theory is that I will have to close the GPS.DIX.dk server or pay a connection-fee of DKR 54.000,00 (approx USD 8,800) a year as long as the traffic is a significant fraction of total traffic to the server.

I owe $5000 to an external consultant who helped me track down where these packets came from.

I have already spent close to 120 non-billable hours (I'm an independent contractor) negotiating with D-Link's laywers and mitigating the effect of the packets on the services provided to the legitimate users of GPS.dix.dk.

Finally I have spent approx DKR 15.000,00 (USD 2,500) on lawyers fees trying to get D-Link to negotiate in good faith.

And it never occured to him to systematically unplug each device to see if it was the one causing the problem and then spend $99 on a new router? Something seems mighty fishy to me.

The lawsuit, which was previously filed by Lucent against Microsoft, was ruled in favor of Microsoft, not on legal grounds, but because of a typographical error in Lucent's patent papers.

The typographical error in question was the use of an unusual symbol by Lucent in place of the more standard 's' in the word 'Microsoft.'

A plan for a new internet "domain" for pornography has once again been shelved, dealing another blow to the US-backed addressing system that acts as the glue holding together the unified global internet.

The setback is likely to add to pressure stresses that could eventually fragment the internet, breaking it into a collection of separate national systems, some internet experts warned.

The reason for this I assume is because if users can't easily access porn, there really is no point to the internet, is there?

  19. Encyclopedia Galactica on Britannica Attacks - Nature Returns Fire · · Score: 5, Insightful

Wikipedia is so much better than Britanica in so many ways. For example if you look up Allentown, Pennsylvania it tells me, "The city also is somewhat known for a Billy Joel song, "Allentown," which appeared on Joel's "The Nylon Curtain" (1982) and "Greatest Hits: Volume II" (1985) albums. The song depicts the resolve of Allentonians, amidst the rough and hardened life that characterizes this East Coast, industrial city. "Allentown" also references nearby Bethlehem, home of the then-declining (and now defunct) Bethlehem Steel Corporation." While this may not be a fact that is highbrow enough for inclusion in Britannica, this is actually one of the things I think of when I think of that city -- making it much more useful to me on a practical level.

    Or in other words:

Here's what the Encyclopedia Galactica has to say about alcohol. It says that alcohol is a colorless volatile liquid formed by the fermentation of sugars and also notes its intoxicating effect on certain carbon-based life forms.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy also mentions alcohol. It says that the best drink in existence is the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. It says that the effect of drinking a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is like having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick.

    Thats the difference.

  22. I Don't Buy It on Apple to Face iPod Clone Attack · · Score: 4, Interesting

This year they [cell phone makers] will start releasing phones with the same storage as iPods -- up to 30 gigabytes. iPods themselves will have to become phones.

This makes perfect sense. We all know cell phones are amazingly easy to use with simple and consistent interfaces. I can't wait to run out of batteries from listening to music so I miss important phone calls.

There is also the consistent leapfrogging Apple seems to do. This generation of iPods might be able to be almost feature-matched by the next generation of cell phones, but by the time the next generation of cell phones come out the iPod will be a VCR/TiVO as well as a music player.

I'm sure journalists then will be saying the iPod will die because the next generation of cell phones will play videos.
