  1. Re:Why? on NASA's E-Nose: It Smells, But It's Improving · · Score: 1
There's an article here at SmokeDot about how and why marijuana became illegal, and I think it illustrates some of the petty reasons they became illegal in the first place, even though now those reasons have been buried.

Something I've heard which would be interesting if proven true, is that the tobacco industry was one of the biggest lobbying groups behind the illegalization of marijuana. I know if I could get cigarettes, which definitely are addictive, and give me a slight buzz, or pot, which definitely will get me high, but isn't as addictive, I'd go for the pot.

I also find it funny that alchohol is legal while drugs like acid and pot are illegal. Sure, people flip out on acid sometimes. But how many times do people beat the crap out of each other thanks to alchohol? My guess would be every night of the week somewhere in this country.

I personally find drug use to be like a dirty little secret that no one wants to talk about. More people do drugs than most realize, but are afraid to admit it, due to the stigma attached. Not to mention how many people in this country are DRUG ADDICTS thanks to the tobacco industry. I love how cigarettes fall into a different category simply because they're not a very powerful drug.

Someone already commented that 3DFx is losing, so they're holding onto their closed API as a last resort.

What I think is they are losing the 3D battle BECAUSE they have a closed API.

Put simply, they got lazy. They thought no one could touch them and their API. So their hardware development suffered.

  6. Re:C'mon people. on Patent Attempt on some forms of Dynamic Web Posting · · Score: 1

I think the anger towards patents is based on the fact that the patent office apparently has *no* standards anymore. It seems like they'll give a patent to anyone, without looking into prior use.

I agree that patents are needed. But I think an innovative way to handle this would be to make patent applications public right from the start. That way if I have a prior use issue, I can notify the patent office to let them know. Then they can look into it. It would save them money (since it's impossible to look at everything in the world for prior use) and save alot of people hassles and money.

Just doing a quick search on dejanews, I found about 50 posts by skyroket@aol.com...but they were all from 1997, and all on sex newsgroups. It looks like he was a spammer. Most likely the virus' author was a regular on one of those newsgroups and has an aversion towards spammers (who doesn't?) I'd be willing to bet money the skyroket@aol.com address was faked for the posting (need a scapegoat? Use a spammer :)
