  1. Invincible on New Linux Worm · · Score: 1

Does anyone know where to find a definitive list of worms/virii that can affect linux? It can't be that many, maybe a few dozen. That many Outlook viruses pop up every week. What we really need is a windows scripting host for linux . I guess the more the platform is deployed, the bigger target for virus-writers it becomes. It still must be much more difficult to write one for *nix though.

Under the normal run of things my opinion would be: "good, screw the company that wants to trademark the name of an open protocol". But this is a little different. He WROTE the damn thing, then gave it away. I don't think keeping the name is too much to ask. Especially considering how widespread this product has become. Do you know any sysadmins who don't use it??

No shit a copyright!= patent. If you read the post, the copyleft works fine on it's own, meaning that it is not a patent, nor was such a thing even implied.

Yeah, sorry bout that, just checked my ref. Probably should have done that BEFORE I posted :-)

  5. Patents?? on Patents For Open Source Projects? · · Score: 2

This whole thing seems rather contrary to the open-source mentality. If you patent something, and don't enforce the patent, it becomes void. This means that open source programmers would have to start the same legal bs that big companies use to protect their patents. Bad idea. I think that the copyleft does a fine job on it's own, thanks.

  8. internet virtual community == myth on Is The Net Revolution Breaking Faith? · · Score: 3

Every time someone mentions virtual community on the internet my stomach turns. It really is just that, virtually a community, but not quite. Sure people will ramble on about the WELL and other successful ventures like slashdot. However these are merely the exceptions that prove the rule. The only kind of online community that really had any credence was the old BBS scene. This was due to the fact that these people generally lived in the same geographic region, had similar environments, and had common threads, the very things that define community. They tended to have face-to-face get togethers (anyone remember board parties??) and were generally more intimate than anyone in the vastness of the corporatized internet is capable of.

You do have a point. However, there is a big difference between pressing a pedal and reinstalling device drivers because windows screwed up your display and you need 800X600 to make this detailed excel spreadsheet your boss e-mailed you visible as one page. Also, one only really does a handful of tasks in relation to driving, whilst computers encompass a thousand totally unrelated (to the uninitiated) activities. It's really easy to learn 10 simple parts of a task (turn key, press pedal, turn wheel) than it is to learn all of the eccintricities of modern technology (read computers and their offspring). just my opinion tho'

  10. UI on Too Much Tech Makes End Users Blink · · Score: 2

Maybe the reason that technology will continue to outstrip peoples ability to deal with it is the fact that people should not have to deal with it. If we spent as much time learning about how people interact with technology as we do learning about how to build bigger/faster/better tech, we'd be light years ahead of where we are now. The GUI was the first big step, how about the next one??

What about peer to peer. Not just Napster either... I'm talking about using every machine connected to the net as some kind of resource, whether it be cpu cycles, storage, indexing, whatever. That's going to be the next really killer app. And it will revolutionize everything.

  12. International Issues on Geographical Borders on the Web · · Score: 3

This does raise all kinds of issues about doing business on the web. Just because my company is located somewhere no longer restricts my customer base to nearby regions, or even customers who speak the same language. How will these issues be addressed in the future? I can only hope that it doesn't get to the point where some kind of international board determines what kind of data goes where. However, with anonymous proxy servers and such, I suppose that this would be very hard to implement. The lawyers must really be scratching their heads over this one. ;-)

  14. Another old-school company, can't keep up on NCR Claims Palm Infringes As "Personal Terminal" · · Score: 2

NCR has little ground for suing. Is keeping my datebook and playing a few games considered "transactions"? I don't think so, at least not in the sense that a company called "National Cash Register" thinks. Maybe they have a shadow case now that things like the palm XII or any unit with a Minstrel wireless modem allow you to buy stuff online wirelessly, but I still think it's a stretch. On a side note, why are they just going after the two biggest Palm OS companies? Why not go after Compaq and HP and the myriad others that make WinCE based handhelds? Maybe their lawyers don't have that kind of guts :-)

Maybe this will end up as a good thing for the software. With Sony's assistance, perhaps the emulator can be optimized and made to work with a greater variety of games. Most psx emulators I've used (read bleem!) have too many bugs to make them alot of fun, and the list of supported titles is too short.
