You are perpetuating serious nonsense yourself. There is nothing wrong with ASF, but there are *stupid* pirate groups everywhere who have no sense of how to use it. Most ASF's were made from already-bad MPEG-1 files (that's two lossy compressions in a row!), and with a complete inability to adjust software settings. While the MPEG-1's were 1/4th of NTSC/PAL resolution, the idiots recompressed them to a laughably low resolution of 320x200, stripped the framerate from the original 29.97/25 to 15, and generally messed everything else up as well. Oh, and they forgot to check that little box that says "click here for better quality!! do it! do it now!1 damn!!"

There have been a few good ASF releases, but nowadays they're making "DivX ;-)" releases from DVD rips. Only God knows why it's called that, because it has nothing to do with the recently-deceased divx "pay-per-view DVD" format. DivXes are gaining lots of acceptance, because it's essentially the same technology as MPEG-4 ASF's, but with a brand new name!

It's not that bad, you get used to using the mouse in the other hand pretty quickly, and giving your better arm the chance to rest every once in a while helps greatly in preventing any syndromes..

I was amazed at the cellular service in iceland. Not only have they 2 operators in a 220k people country, but the connection is really good even in the middle of nowhere--take a 100-person village, and walk 5 kilometers into the wilderness, and you still have a clear, good connection. Wow.

  19. Re:Europe on The Cell Phone-PDA Revolution · · Score: 1

There are other good reasons, too. For example some people, like students, might move many times, or switch cities or whatever. With a cell phone, you don't have to change your phone number or pay any fees to the operator. And school kids (12-18 years) just love to send text messages to each other in class.

We had an analogic cell phone system in Finland ages ago, the first wave, ARP came in 1977. It was manually switched meaning you "dialed" and someone on the other end asked you where you want to connect. The 80's were dominated by the more advanced, automatic NMT that is still alive and kicking, especially in the wilderness. They're shutting it down now, though, since GSM900/1800 coverage is nowadays pretty good and NMT use has decreased so much.

When the hand-held sized cell phones appeared in the 90's, the pager devices very quickly disappeared, which was right.

I was there. It was yesterday and yes, Transmeta did come up several times... the first question out of the audience after Linus spoke was "what does Transmeta do?"
Some crazy woman wanted to ask Linus something: She started talking about how information technology could be used for monitoring people and stealing their freedom. THEN she started claiming that in the '50's 3 million people had been implanted with a MICROCHIP (a microchip in the 50's!) and that just last week she spoke with a colonel who had refused a microchip. Then she furiously went on saying that soon all babies will be implanted and in the future it will be possible to remotely read anyone's thoughts with such a chip. At this point the audience was laughing their asses off. To this Linus simply replied, "well that was kind of an UFO talk, but.. I can' really reveal what Transmeta is doing (laughter from audience), but anyways, I think information technology will actually help people gain more freedom'
Later on someone was talking about how technology can help us to talk to old or sick people who can no longer talk, to which Linus replied 'talking to the dead, you mean?'. Then one of the panelists said 'Now I REALLY want to know what Transmeta is doing'
