    Especially for Prime members.

I live in Washington state. A couple of years ago we got an Amber Alert related to an abduction in California - somebody thought the guy might choose to head north, so they apparently set them off along the entire I-5 corridor.

I disabled them on my phone long before that, but you still see them on freeway signs and whatnot.

The idea behind Amber Alerts isn’t a bad one, but the implementation is rubbish - probably because it’s driven by emotion rather than a rational look at what might actually help.

Sure, it’s nice not to be a target... but even if they’re collecting my data incidentally that’s a problem, since we’ve seen time and time again that law enforcement agencies hold onto incidental data as well. This means it can get stolen and misused by other bad actors; or it can potentially be used against you in the future by government and/or private entities without application of the constitutional strictures that exist in a land where people are supposedly innocent until proven guilty.

  4. So I skimmed the article... on Anti-GMO Activists Slow Scientists Breeding a CO2-Reducing Superplant (thebulletin.org) · · Score: 1

    - As far as I can tell, the reason this plant breeder isn’t using CRISPR is because she is “concerned” anti-GMO activists will fight it. There’s no mention of anything these activists have actually done - so the premise itself seems a bit dicey. It’s like me saying “I don’t want to go outside for a walk because I read about people getting proselytized when they were out for a walk”.

    - The approach itself doesn’t seem to address the fundamental problem of increasing CO2 production. Yes, we can plant some farmland with this theoretical super crop... but the amount of land available for this has an upper bound, so the quantity of CO2 that can theoretically be fixed also has an upper bound. We’re basically talking about, at best, moving the clock back by some set number of years.

It's a great idea but if you're a manager or other similar non-productive type, half of your job is randomly stopping by and annoying your co-workers

That's still quite possible to do remotely.

I had a boss who required we all be on instant messaging at all times, whether in the office or working from home. On my telecommute days he would IM irrelevant crap to me at random times - I assume to check whether I'd respond or not (he would only do this when I was teleworking, never in the office). I'd tell him that having to stay on IM all the time substantially negated the benefit of teleworking, since those were supposed to be my focus-on-longterm-project days - but he would have none of that.

  10. It's fitting that the story comes from the Washington Post since this has nothing to do with Amazon and EVERYTHING to do with the smear job WAPO has been doing to Trump.

So you are claiming that a story about how Trump is pushing the Postmaster General to significantly increase the rates it charges Amazon... has nothing to do with Amazon? Are you saying Trump did not, in fact, press for Amazon's postal rates to increase? Because the Postmaster General has specifically and rather publicly stated why she cannot do that - which would be an odd and random thing for her to say if Trump hadn't asked for it.

How about a similar story from Fox News? Is this one a smear job too? Did Bezos buy Fox News? http://www.foxnews.com/politic...
