    What? Open mass murder was very common in the century that ended just 48 days ago. Millions were openly murdered in Nazi Germany, The Soviet Union, The Peoples Republic of China, and Cambodia. The Nazi murders were racist mainly, Though speaking out against Hitler got a lot of people killed. The other three mass murderer states did it in the name of Marxism. You decry the mild perscution of Marxists in the USA, Yet you failed to mention the millions who were murdered and imprisioned for the crime of not holding Marxist views.

    When I suggest people try Linux I often get asked about AOL.Last month I wrote AOL and asked if they planned on adding Linux support. This is the reply I got.

    I want to personally thank you for taking the time to write with your concerns about using the America Online (AOL) software on the Linux operating system.
    America Online for Linux is currently in research and development.
    AOL Member Services is currently "collecting the data" on requests for AOL for Linux and I assure you that your feelings and input are being used to help AOL make the best possible online experience.
    I am excited about any improvements to the service and will be able to answer questions about AOL for Linux as soon as information and a possible release date are made available.

    Most ISPs terms of use forbid making offtopic and spam posts to news groups. Just add a trace to the routine that accepts the post, and does a lookup for who that IP adress is assigned to. When a post reaches -2 the name of the ISP, time of the post, and the IP address get added to the post. All the information that is needed for readers to slashdot the ISP's abuse line with reports. Anonymous Cowards who troll deserve to become Well known cowards.

    The first MS product I used was the Basic on my C-64. Since then I have used everything from DOS on an XT to Windows NT on a Pentium II. After this history I am in no hurry to shell out hundreds of US$ for Win2000, Or even $60 to be a Beta tester. I have made posts here and elsewhere to the effect that due to MS's history of releasing Buggy OSes I see no reason to beleave Win2000 will be any different. If you want to change my mind, then send me a copy. I'll try it out. If it is as good as MS claims I'll post how good it is here. If its as bad as your other OSes I'll flame the hell out of it AFTER I try it out.

The formula, Trash something, wait for links on news sites that people actually read, and watch the hitmeter go crazy. Then tell the advertisers "Metcalfe's coloum got XXXXX hits last week, Want an ad for next week?"

    A pre-release of 5.0 was the code Netscape opensourced to Mozilla. After the stuff Netscape didn't own was ripped out, what was left was a basket case. After 6 months Mozilla tossed it and started over. Netscape 5.0 existed but wasn't released. So the new browser IS 6.0.

    The day Netscape opensourced the Mozilla code, They annouced that the next Netscape browser would be based on Mozilla. Netscape 6.0 will be a branded version of Mozilla, Not a replacement for the Mozilla browser. There will other branded versions, even MrEd 1.0 if you feel like downloading the code, and creating your own branded verision.

    Where can I access the W2K buglist so I can check it out myself? What is Microsoft's URL for a searchable bug database like Bugzilla? I just checked Knowledge base for product "Windows2000" keyword "issue" and only got 200 matches. Keyword "bug" only gives 16 matches. The article says "Microsoft is estamating that 28,000 of these are likely to be "real" problems." That leaves 27,784 real problems that Microsoft is aware of. What are they?

    Don't worry about the GUI. It's just a skin. You can change it. Mozilla skins will be as common as themes. Just pick the one you like. I'm sure you will be able to get a classic Netscape skin, or even make it look like IE (To fool your PHB into thinking you are using the company approved browser.) Don't worry about the bloat. It's open source. If Mozilla or Netscape don't have browser only downloads somebody else will. The DOS window is just dogfood. It'll go away soon.

    You could start exporting now, But the problem is first you have to rewrite many Aps to include Crypto. Then you have to be ready to rewrite them again if/when new regs come out. Very time consuming. I think the best bet is to lobby your representives about writting these new regs into law. Then programers can make long term decesions without worring about who will win this years election.

    This isn't a law. It's a regulation. Laws are passed by Congress and can only be changed by Congress. The Current law allows the Commerce Department to Issuse whatever regulations it wants to regarding Crypto. Last year Congress was moving towards changing the law and reducing the Departments power regarding Crypto. Clinton was having trouble keeping it bottled up in comitee. By changing the regulations now they avoided losing the power of setting regulations. They can change the rules again next year. Lucy (Commerce) still controlls the football. We might get to kick it today, But she can jerk it away anytime she thinks she can get away with it.

    Since Windows seems to be setting the example here's how MS handled it. When you look in System Properties A Letter is Appended to the Build. Win95 with SP1 is A, OSR2 is B, Osr2.5 is C. So if Foo came out in the spring of 2000 That would be Foo 2000. A second release in the summer would be Foo 2000A. Then you wouldn't have a problem unless you released more than 27 times in a year.

    Year versioning also makes it easier to compare products from two venders. Look at the recent jump in Slackware numbers. Too many people were assuming that Slackware 4.0 was older than Redhathat 6.0. If they were Redhat 99 and Slackware 99 the confusion could have been avoided.

    I was a campaign manager in two elections for the state house. Most of the so called reform is one group trying to prevent it's opponents from making contributions. The real problem is the Goverment has assumed too much power. Most contributions are made because someone wants to use the goverment as a club to beat someone over the head OR because someone is trying to keep from getting beat over the head. Limit the power of the Goverment and you will find the contributions drying up.
