  1. That would make Apple a worthless brand on Daring to Dream: Apple & IBM · · Score: 1

Most of the Apple hardcore loyalists would drop Apple like it had a big nasty worm.

I doubt Jobs would sell Apple. And IBM getting rid of their PC division because it has no profit potential. I doubt they would be able to better manage Apple than Apple can by itself.

I say this is a speculative unlikelyhood.

Back when I was working at a large southeastern university, the Math/CS dept. ordered a SC2000 from Sun. It was shipped by FedEx (w/o insurance) and it was delivered by one FedEx guy who tried to roll it on the truck lift. As it was going down it tipped over and fell onto the ground. It was crushed by its own weight.

It took about a month of negotiations before Sun would replace it with a new one. Mainly because there was no FedEx shipping. After that all shipments came via Viking in the US. I wonder why?

Broadcasters don't have their act together now and probably won't for a while. I suggest getting the display now, tuner later. Many sets can just act as monitors and that is a good thing since the tuner adds a big cost to the set. However, movie DVD playback is where it's at right now. Get a set for $3000-$5000 and a $500 DVD player is a great combo, esp. if you already have a good audio setup.

If you got the money to burn, the real winner right now is the Panasonic PT-42PD3-P and the PT-50PD3-P. One is 42" diag. and the other is 50". I recently saw "A Bug's Life" on the 50" model at Fry's and it blew me away. Of course, the price tag of $14999.95 is a bit steep, but it is only 2.5" deep and puts out no heat!

  12. Solaris is encumbered on Novell Embraces Open Source, Sun Still Flirting · · Score: 1

What is all of this bitching about? First, Solaris is not a Sun creation. It is the derived work of many other companies (AT&T/Lucent, SCO, and even Microsoft!). In order to go open source, Sun not only has to change its license, but convince the other owners to do the same. I can bet you now that is not likely to happen anytime soon. Second, the whole open source announcement was a mistake from a unknown veep within Sun. It seems that one veep was quoted that Sun was going to give away source, then the other veeps in the compnay started parroting the same thing to not look like fools. So for a mistake decision, it is a pretty good implementation.

  23. Re:Didn't Oracle use its own FS? on Why eCommerce Sites collapse · · Score: 2

Oracle can use either a file or a partition for its datastore. In recent versions of Solaris, Oracle will put the file in a mode which can bypass the VFS layer of the OS to get near raw partition speeds.

The inside scoop was that, because eBay did not install the latest kernel patch to Solaris 2.5.1, they ran into a bug where if you have a kernel core dump of more than 2GB, it will piss all over your disks. I suspect they do not have root or swap under Vertias control.

So when the machine panic'd, it overwrote most of root (the core dump starts from the end of swap back to the beginning, many users have root just before swap on their disk).

So they not only had to restore Solaris, they had to restore their configuration. Not something that can occur quickly, esp. when the CEO of a company is breathing down your back. It is also my understanding that the eBay database itself was okay and didn't have any data corruption.
