Jamie was great. Bright guy, very honest, very forthright. It was refreshing to have somebody like that to talk to about Mozilla.org and Netscape. It'll be a shame to see him go.
I've noticed a trend lately. Eric Raymond wants his life back. Jamie is leaving Mozilla. Linus will certainly be focusing more and more on Transmeta (read his Linux Magazine interview). That leaves Richard Stallman debating whether Linux needs a GNU tacked on in front of it.
It would be nice if somebody could step up and assume some of these leadership roles. ESR is right -- you need some advocacy. Somebody has to translate the Open Source ideals into English so that the masses can grok it and get on board. Hell, you might not even need a true code hacker for it -- someone like CmdrTaco is great at expressing the Open Source ideas to the public.
But more than that, every single person who believes in Open Source needs to stand up and support it in any way they can. Can you hack code? Then surf over to Mozilla, download some code, and contribute. Go to a Linux kernel ftp site and download that. Hell, start your own damn Open Source project! But get involved...that's the key.
And those of us who can't hack code (like myself), but still really like this whole crazy Open Source thing, can contribute by talking with others, evangelizing, and getting the rest of the world excited about it.
These defections aren't good. It's up to the community to make sure enough people can step up and carry on the good fight.
It had some great effects, but my friends and I repressed giggles a lot through the movie. It was very melodramatic and overacted (expected from Keanu, not expected from a great actor like Lawrence Fishburn). I describe it as Dune meets Jackie Chan meets Alien meets (insert Gibson book here).
It was worth the $7.50, but only for the Keanu eye candy (for the grrls).
These cultures have not "been killing each other for centuries" -- the ethnic cleansing conducted by Serbian nationlists first in Bosnia and now in Kosovo is the product of a deliberate and callous fabrication of history as a means of attainting and maintaining political power.
If nothing else, at least read Survival Guide -- probably the most poignant and clever book I've ever read. Basically, it's a tour-guide to a besieged Sarajevo covering the blacked-out nightly hotspots, corners to avoid because of constant sniper fire, and where to find water (the local creek), firewood (the city's parks), and food (grow it or scavenge in the fields under cover of night).
But for a really good history and background on the current conflict, you have to read Yugoslavia: Death of a Nation.
All I can say is I'm sorry I haven't contributed to Mozilla.
I've become what I used to hate most: A Windows User. An IE user.
In November I discarded my Mac and caved into the Windows mentality, and now I'm successfully converted to NT. I hated it at first, and I was embarrased whenever someone asked me about it. But now it's comfy.
Then in January I caved in and started using IE, because it really is a better browser...
Tonite I'm getting a copy of Red Hat and I'm going to blow the microsoft stuff away.
And I'm going to start in full-force on Mozilla.
I wish everyone else would do the same. If we don't contribute to Mozilla - in a real way - then we're all going to become IE and AOL users.
I had the same idea a month ago. In the end, I never set it up. One reason is my school work. The other is simply this: there are already so many Linux websites for newbies, eg. those by Howard Mann, Josh, etc. and of course the LDP itself. Should I contribute another one? I felt that unless I can fully commit myself to the task, my work may be a disservice to the community. A poorly maintained help-site is worst than a Windows-advocacy site.:)
I am not here to throw wet blankets. If you have the time and commitment, go ahead and do it! Otherwise, help out in existing projects. I am sure the project's owner will be more than happy. Hint: The LDP has some really old HOWTOs that may benefit from a rejuvenation and inclusion of distribution-specific information.:-)
I include below a listing of (newbies) websites which I know of and like. You might want to email their maintainers.
I only read the second article (ie. Freshmeat Editorial). The author forgot to mention another way that non-programmers can help: participation in Linux newsgroups and IRC channels. Newbies can be won over by quick and correct responses from these sources. Just make sure you don't flame them for asking stupid questions (unless they are in the category of "Teach me how to get root!"). Maxim: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
What does that foolishness stand for? Divide youself from 'X' $$$?
Takes a phone line? Charges you for each use? Non-transferable? AND you have to call these people if you have problems?(with the machine USING your phone line?)
I don't know about Disney, but Microsoft must have developed the marketing strategy. Probably the software too, even though the article didn't mention it randomly shutting your TV down.
(Also from CMU) The funniest part about them I thought was when I asked about marketing plans for them, and was told that one of the biggest problems with them is that their heads still break off too easily. Oops.
The various motions they can be programmed to do seem fairly canned, unfortunately. Walking forward is one particular motion sequence, laying down is another, turning left is another, etc.
I don't know anything about the API, but I would think the first thing to work on would be more natural looking (and therefore more efficient) motion. Not sure what sort of sensors they have, I doubt they include joint torque sensors.
Hm... maybe, maybe not. Definitely obnoxious, but this is often true of comedians {Lenny Bruce was not a nice guy}.
Why did we all assume MS would try to suppress UF and segfault? Not easy, and where's the money in it for Microsoft? Generally, when Microsoft does something, there's a profit in it for Microsoft.
I'll admit they had me going till all three sites went down...at which point I'm thinking "this has to be a prank...a frighteningly believable prank, but a prank". Then I laughed, found out the next day Userfriendly has owned up, and went on with life.:)
Just about the only really scary thing is one can't exactly put it PAST megacorporations to do these kinds of lawsuits anymore...still, I'm glad to know we were all merely being kidded with.;) Like people DON'T expect at least one "joke story" or at least one huge, Malkavian-scale prank on April Fools Day. Sheesh.;)
Actually the dial in portion of divx isn't copy protection. You don't want to copy the disc, just watch it. Do you own the disc? Absolutely, a good enough lawyer (or team of lawyers) could kick CC's ass in court if they tried to crack down on a key distribution system.
But my main point is this, I too have heard claims about how "strong" divx encryption is, I think that divx players would be four times more expensive if they had the type of CPU power needed to decrypt (on the fly) and play 5.2 GB of strongly encrypted data. I've heard claims of triple des and what not, but I don't believe it.
If someone were to make the claim that he'd sell you a device that would octouple out gas mileage, double your car's hoursepower and protect you in case of an accident yet only costs $14.99 and fits in your trunk, chances are he's lying. Same thing with divx.

Yeah, As a joke a technican here had his lawyer work up legal papers saying Microsoft was offering to buy our ISP. Looks fully legal, etc. Then he drove to the nearest local microsoft chronie division and maile dit from there. Rather Cute. He's now jobless. =) (Ok, maybe not, but that would have been even funnier)
I could easily see that the injuction would start at the beginning of the month.. Insurance usually doesn't just start on Mar 23 and neither do things like this.
Jokes! Jokes everywhere! So where am I gonna get my techie insider stuff today? What do I tell me editors when they ask what's going on? All I can say is "uhh...well, there's a lot of jokes out there today."
C'mon, Rob! Don't make me do my own hunting today! Bring on the real news!!
Just kidding, mind you. Though I do wish the Internet as a whole would get over this April Fools thing in the next few hours. Some of us actually have work to do!:)

Or is it a feature which I am too dense to undersand?
Am I the only one experiencing it?
Sorry for the offtopic message - feel free to demote it. Hopefully not to -1.
