I think this is a great step in the right direction. I was getting rather tired of having an OS shoved at me. If I wanted it I would go out and purchase it myself. I dont want to be FORCED to use anything....
This sounds almost dead-on identical to a program at the Univ. of North Texas in Denton (tiny little town a little north of the metastasizing cancer that is Dallas-FortWorth) called TAMS (Texas Academy of Math and Science). I went there, graduated in 96. I've heard of other programs that are _similar_ in other states, but so far those I've read about didn't involve taking actual college courses, but instead courses lying somewhere between 'advanced' HS courses and collegiate courses....
I think TAMS is unique out of the 'come to college two years early' programs in that not only does it emphasize math/science it also tries to give it's graduates a good grounding in the humanities (which although it may not translate into $ does make you a broader thinker and deeper person IMHO). Most other programs seem to be either all Science/Math or all Humanities with very little of the other....
Oh, and the state pretty much pays for everything at TAMS, hehe... Too bad the food mainly sucked at the cafeterias!;^) (To fellow tamsters: remember the food @ Bruce? Two words: chicken tetrazinni (sp?). tetra = 4 = the number of times that same chicken has been on the serving line in 'other incarnations')
(At least all my "take something besides what your taking in Nat. Sci." req would be done... I've enough chem credit to choke a goat (Better living through chemistry my sphincter, try taking pchem and enjoying yourself (if you do, please seek help)! hehehe:^) ).)
I've had quite a bit (i.e. too damn much, haha) of stat experience in various courses here at good old U. Texas. Statistics is an infinitely malleable field because most folks don't understand how to interpret the results and dishonest practictioners take advantage of this. Two people who both know stat can discuss something, indeed are forced to discuss something (something = anything being considered in a statistical light), at a far more rigourous level.
That being said, a quote from Mark Twain seems appropriate: (paraphrasing slightly due to poor memory on my part) "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and statistics."

I recently Produced and Directed a play based on GEB, called "Prelude, Ant Fugue". the bell curve theory is just that. and anyway, it has absolutely _nothing_ to do with the distribution of taxation. PR is the one to thank for the trickle down theory, and the fact that proportionally more wealth is currently controlled by the top few percent of this nation than ever before.
If you're no good at math then you shouldn't major in cs. You should major in software engineering or something else, or better yet not go to college at all. CS _is_ math, and I know lots of people who are good at math, and can still program quite well. I hate it when people perpetually whine about things being to hard. You just make it so everyone's incompetant. It's ok to be stupid; just don't drag people down to your level.
And as far as proving "all unicorns are pink," you are sadly mistaken about the utility of math. If you don't understand all the math behind an algorithm, then you're nothing but an overglorified typist.
You just don't get it. We don't want to be the homecoming king/queen. We have never wanted that. All the geeks want to do is be able to do their stuff in their group without being fucked with by the jocks, cheerleaders, yuppies, ect. I was less than a year into highschool when I quit and got my GED. I couldn't take it anymore. Every day I would get up, and feel sick. If I didn't feel sick I made myself feel sick just so I wouldn't have to go to that prison called high school.
When I was forced to go I was constantly tormented, people like you would get up during your little fucking lameass prep rallys and go "lets all be equal and have fun, GO FOOTBALL TEAM" , never once mentioning the kids that sucked at sports (me) but could rip a pc apart and put it back together in a matter of hours, or use something other than AOL for internet. NEVER, NOT FUCKING ONCE WERE WE MENTIONED, NOT ONCE. Then when it was all over the same people that were up on stage, talking about how we were all "equal" (damn do I love that bullshit of a word) were bashing me and my geek friends. WTF is up with that. Where's the equality now? huh?
Thats why these kids snapped, they were sick of it. They couldn't get up another day and be called names like "fuckup", "queer", "freak", ect. It was too much, trust me I know. But no one seems to understand. They all think games or their own problems made them insane, but most likely it was this stupid social system. It's almost always the system.
Then someone like you bothers to come on here going "we don't have clics" and "I went from class loser to Homecoming Queen" thinking your cool. You not cool, your a trader. You sold out to this very system geeks and loser have been fighting then you bother to come on a geek website and tell us we should do the same. You have no right. People like you are part of the problem, not the solution, wanting people to become something we're not. Until attitudes like yours change there's gonna be alot more problems, instead of solutions, in the future.
Add this up to the hellhole that is the American education system. It's amazing that this is just now being reported, seeing as how I've read the exact same thing in a Michael Chrichton novel--Rising Sun--that was published in _1992_! I can't believe these high schools! My school must have matured way before it's time. We no longer have "clics" and the cool group is made up of the kind people. Kids just need to realize the cool people are not who they seem to be. The problem will never end. Someone will always feel left out. The real problem that no one seemed to notice is the students could not get out of the school building. Luckly, I go to a rather small school with less "security" and I could get out of any room. Students need to be taught they will make it further if they are always nice and being mean does not make you look cool. Hey with that attitude I went from class loser to Homecoming Queen...Voted in by the "geeks and nerds" of course. Yes, the old mp3s will run with this new software, so its not a big deal at all. I think Diamond would just rather get back to its real work, and put a fig leaf over the Rio in hopes that the recording industry will have an aneurism or something.
ATT sold the Unix code to Novell a while back and the trademark to X/Open (I believe). Novell renamed the code UnixWare and eventually wound up selling it to SCO. That's why SCO has OpenServer and UnixWare. From what I understand, OpenServer is the existing (heavily reworked) remnents of their (and Microsoft's) Xenix product. They're trying to phase out OpenServer (understandibly) and moving to UnixWare (while working on Gemini).
Eh, all that will do is get rid of products like the Rio, and such. But chances are, anyone that wants one, has already bought one.
And If you are talking about RIAA 'Industry' support, which I don't think you are, their support wasn't needed to begin with. MP3 won't be killed by the likes of them, or even by Diamond. The MP3 codec wasn't developed so the record companies could more eaisly make money...
Our long-term goal is to deliver a universal solution beyond just servers, and advance the technology to the client.
From my knowledge of Java (one year of heavy development) I see no reason why they would develop the VM for just server side applications. As far as I know once you have developed the JNI code it can be ported to any VM. So why is Sun placing this restriction on HotSpot, or is it just a name game?
