  1. IT work environment does contribute on IT and Divorce? · · Score: 1

A lot of IT environments do make to hard to stay married and be the doting father and husband. The culture of IT is basically be on-call, work a lot of nights for changes, and be available during the day. I learned awhile back that you can push back on a lot of this, but only after you have established yourself within the industry a little.

Don't forget the constant self-study if you want to stay up to date. In a lot ways, IT Professionals have a lot of the same gripes that doctor's have and I bet the divorce rates are similar. Whether that's higher than the average or not I have no idea, but anecdotally I'd say IT folks to stay married more versus the general population, as do I would suspect doctor's do as well.

Face it, IT professionals are still paid well above the national average, and that helps balance out the negatives quite a bit.

  2. Re:Slashdot is going to hate this... on How iTunes Hurts Weird Al · · Score: 1

You can blame Apple all you want, but in the other major market for digital downloads (ringtones), snippets of these songs are going for 3 bucks a pop. Guess what? The big 4 record companies wanted single songs to sell for 3 bucks a pop on iTunes, too. Apple said no. Given that some albums already cost more than 10 bucks on iTunes, I'm sure the record companies were trying to raise album prices to comparable CD prices (which retail for around $18 and wholesale for around $12).

The funny thing is, no one bitches about ringtones and they sell a ton of them and they are for all intents and purposes playable only on the phone they were bought for. But iTunes is some great evil.

Folks, the recording company is totally to blame here. Apple's margins on digital downloads are comparable to a brick and mortar store (around 20 percent). The wholesale price is set by the labels and they wanted very desperately to raise it. What they pay the artists is criminal, but these artists do sign these contracts and they are adults.

Apple's stock drop had more to do with MTV's music store announcement than anything else. Which is a joke, but shows that Apple's stock is definitely in growth mode and subject to changes in price based on the littlest of news.

  4. Re:Jobs sold 300 Million USD of Apple stock on The Forgotten Apple CEO · · Score: 1

It has been reported Mr. Jobs is getting serious about diversifying is portfolio. It's pretty much Apple and Pixar right now and he, wisely, doesn't want his entire estate tied to two companies. You are right that he sees Disney as a stronger stock long-term than Pixar and will probably hold onto most of that. He is also, I believe, taking Apple stock instead of salary to be CEO. That speaks volumes about what he thinks of Apple's long term position.

Actually, Lucas wanted more money but his divorce forced him to sell. Still would have been a song at the price he sold it for. However, there is no reason to believe Lucas would have built it into the same company.

Believe me, she does not want to go to court. First off, she's probably guilty. Secondly, her costs will skyrocket either way. Paying a lawyer to do what you are suggesting is quite a bit more expensive than settling.

  7. Re:Just in case, article text on RIAA Recommends Students Drop out of College · · Score: 1

She should agree to settle and take the six month option. And then don't pay it. Probably will get sent to collections but it's better than going to court. They could try and garnish her wages, but I doubt she makes enough to be truly garnishable. She could also declare bankruptcy. She's young and can take the hit.

  8. Re:bazillion dollar company's? on On Apple vs Apple · · Score: 3, Informative

Not true. Apple Computer has the right under the last settlement to be in the music business. They do not have the right to distribute music on CDs or other physical medium. This case is about that. Does the Internet constitute a physical medium and if so, is Apple Records being damaged by Apple Computer using it to distribute music.

I think the actual case is fairly interesting. The judge could set quite a precedent here on distribution via electronic means.

  9. Re:Maybe Steve Jobs should be interrogated by Bria on The Beatles, Apple, and iTunes · · Score: 1

The last settlement gave Apple Computer the right to be in the music business. What they could not do was distribute musical content on a physical medium (Hence you had to download "The Complete U2" rather than have it be pre-loaded). The case in London is to decide if electronic distribution over the Internet is "physical". Of course, everyone hopes Jobs simplies settles and gets The Beatles exclusively on iTunes, but I think Apple Computer has a pretty good case here. And hey, the judge owns an iPod.

Talk to engineers who are in SPEEA and then talk to the ones who are not and the non-unionized workers make more money, plain and simple.

Collective bargaining was great for things like safety and working conditions. Collective bargaining is great if you are an under performer because you are getting a larger wage than you would have. Collective bargaining sucks if you over productive, though. Becauase you are getting a smaller raise than you would have gotten.

  13. Re:The Secrets of Salary Systems on The Microsoft Salary and Review System · · Score: 2, Informative

Governments agencies have been doing this for years. But you do move up the scale...just much more slowly. For example, if you are above the mid-point your raises will be smaller and if you are below it the raises will be larger. Why? Because everyone in the grade receives their raise based on the mid-point. So if 3% is the norm everyone receives 3 percent of the mid-point.

Most analyst think Apple makes about 7 cents a song now with iTMS. Certainly not a huge money maker but it is great advertising. Apple makes much more on videos, but they have some higher costs there (content providers get 1.23 a pop and Apple gets the rest according to some reports I've seen).

  15. Re:Here's what Apple needs to do... on Music Industry Threatens to Pull Plug on Apple · · Score: 1

Dish did this with Viacom a couple of years back. Viacom wanted Dish to start carrying more of their crappier channels and tried to seriously up the charges for MTV and Comedy Central. This was right before contracts expired. Dish responded by scrolling a message at the bottom of Viacom's channels telling their viewers to cal Viacom. And when Viacom pulled the plug, Dish put a notice up on each channel that was pulled. The CEO also went on one of the Dish channels and explained the whole situation, how much it would cost each subscriber, etc to meet Viacom's demands. Viacom stayed pulled for about 3 days and I believe Viacom got a slightly higher fee and no additional must carries out of the deal.
