The icon is different, but most users wouldn't notice. The default icon for a VBS file is a document with a picture of a scroll on it (perhaps an ancient Greek "script"?), whereas the default icon for a text file is a document with some lines of text on them. The script doesn't look identical, but most users won't know the difference.

For the first, the second, and the last time, YES. Computer novices have enough trouble learning the difference between, say, checkboxes and radio buttons. It only makes matters worse when there are fifty different styles of checkboxes and radio buttons. Meanwhile, most Windows and Mac applications (knock on wood) have consistent fonts, dialogs, colors, and widgets. Obviously, things aren't perfect, but X apps still have a ways to go before they're as usable as those in other environments.

Please. If you're so concerned about what happens on the Internet, get yourself some software that blocks all sites except mainstream sources that you deem personally acceptable. After all, what you think is "racist hate" could be satire, research, or something else of value to others.

Besides, one of the principal reasons that the Internet has grown so quickly is that it is free and anonymous (for the most part, at least). People don't need to worry about things that social graces prevent in the real world. When's the last time you went to a store and were able to ask the salesperson for recommendations, features, and comparisons between hundreds of items without him/her getting pissed at you for not buying anything?

"Fighting those new Pocket PCs", uh Palm is the one with the monopoly.

Palm doesn't have a monopoly in the pocket-sized PDA market. With a market share of 70-80%, there's still plenty of room for competition. People have been buying Palms not because they're automagically bundled with their operating systems or computers, but because they actually like the product. Remember that Palm/USRobotics/3Com/Palm never even advertised in print or on television until last year, and they had sold several million units when the campaigns started running.

Imagine that. A good product is selling on its merits, and of course on the fact that Everyone Uses It, So It Must Be Good (tm). 'course, I don't want to compare the Palm with AOL any time soon, but hey, there are at least a couple of paralells.

MP3 playback is nice, as long as Sony doesn't instead go to the ATRAXX playback that caused consumers and reviewers to largely pan their Vaio Music Clip device. Who wants to pay $3 per SONG to listen to music that can only be loaded three times?

While you're scrawling commands at a prompt or waiting as X groks away the last of your memory and rejoicing "Hooray for Open Source!" the Palm users will be -- get ready now -- using their PDA's for productive use.
