    > if I wanted an FM radio I could use the one built in my phone

Yeah, well, but then you also have to carry another pair of headphones because cell phones never seem to have a standard 3.5 mm plug. It seems strange to me that Nokia and SE don't include such a connector a phone nowadays with built in MP3 players in their phones (in addition to the FM radio which has been present in most models the last few years).

    > If they want to include a radio at least include a DAB one (the digital radio service in the UK).

There are many reasons to be opposed to DAB as a whole (take a look at http://www.digitalradiotech.co.uk/), but I also believe receiving DAB is much more power hungry than receiving standard FM radio. Can anyone confirm this?

  4. iTunes and the iPod Mini on Why iPod Mini is a smart move for Apple · · Score: 1

Don't get me wrong here, when Steve Jobs first announced the iPod Mini at $249 my first reaction was just like most others (ridiculous price for such a player). The Muvo2 at $199 should in principle be a good comparison for the price point of the Mini.

However, in my opinion, the point of buying one Apple's MP3 players is NOT only the player itself -- it is the combination of iTunes and the iPod itself that makes the iPod worth buying for me. As long as it is not possible to sync any other player as easily as the iPod, the other player will never ever be on my shopping list.

    From the article:
And finally, Linux 2.6 will include improved 64-bit support on block devices that support it, even on 32-bit platforms such as i386. This allows for filesystems up to 2TB.

2 TB? Is this really the filesystem limit in the still unreleased 2.6? Wouldn't a RAID of 7 300GB drives be hitting this limit already, using hardware availiable today? 2 Petabytes or Exabytes would be a nicer limit :)

  6. $999 iBook on Apple Gives Laptops Speed Bumps · · Score: 1

Ok, so the cheapest iBook is a pretty sweet deal with the lowered price. I'm in the market for a similarly spec'ed notebook, but so far I haven't found any that beats the specs of this machine at the price. Surely at least one of the big PC manufacturors has got to have a comparable model (2.2kg, Firewire, TV-out, etc...)? Any ideas?

Yeah, real cheap compared to Minidisc media. Why on earth didn't MD take off as a data storage media? They're about $2 for 140mb.

Didn't I say I do _not_ mean macrovision? I've even tried turning macrovision off and connected the player to my TV card on my computer. I can see _strong_ artifacts and sort of pulsating picture in dark parts of movies. This, of course, varies from movie to movie. It was especially noticable in The Matrix and Sixth Sense (region 2). Comparing the picture quality with software DVD players on my computer showed a _huge_ difference in artifacts... The player sucks.

NO! It is absolutely, positively _not_ an ok player. The picture quality is really bad, you can see large amounts of artifacts and pulsating brightness on every movie... If you are easily annoyed by this, like me, you'd rather prefer to watch VHS (And no, I'm not talking about macrovision when I refer to the pulsating picture...)

Not me. I mean, I get amused by TV ads sometimes, but usually I *change the channel*.

And that's why banning commercials in the middle of TV shows is a really good thing. Here in Scandinavia TV channels are forced to place all ads (except for own shows) in between the programs. It really makes TV much more pleasant to watch. I've watched TV and the US and it makes me wonder how people stand those crap ads -- no wonder tivo is doing so well over there...

Well, excluding Win3.1, Microsoft has to support all the major versions of Windows with Office 2000 - and thus obeying the "standards" of the Win32 API. The fact that Microsoft now has so many different versions of Windows to support is actually a good thing for us. As an example, Wine was able to run Office 2000 the day it was released. From what I have read in the newsgroup, it runs pretty well, too.
