Not having reach the point where I can silence all external stimuli, that sounds like a place where I could think in peace. Too bad I'd get nagged to take the kids in there with me.
No they didn't. Cheney introduce the nasty concept of "unitary of the executive" OBL scared the shit out of politicians who didn't want to be seen disagreeing with a popular war president. Cheney got everything he wanted and no-one stepped out of line.
So, indeed, the president had no control, since the vice-president was the one with a plan.
Yes. I'm exaggerating. The recent Rumsfeld Memoir is very clear about Bush being the one asking his people to link Saddam to 9/11 ("be creative") only a few days after it happened.
This is Chicago we're talking about. "ability to go over and through obstacles in their way during a pursuit" will cover a fraction of a percent of their use cases.
I agree that they sometimes need SUVs to deal with the snowstorms, but they had somehow managed with the crown vics (note how Chicago has gotten safer in the last couple years), and not having the biggest SUV on the market still gets you 95% of the SUV benefit. I know they also moved to Chevy Impalas, which made sense from the crown vic
And yes, I am perfectly justified to complain when they replace twenty-plus year-old technology by stuff that is not more efficient. The cost of the guy driving it keeps going up, but the ride is not a negligible fraction and it should be tamed. Otherwise they need more cash from me.
You forgot to add that once the state is known to spy on everything, it can fabricate any "evidence" it wishes against specific individuals (as a state policy, or because the database operator has a grudge/political motivation), and people will believe it.
If the EU had at least the same size balls as Brazil, they would demand reciprocity. Let's see how long the Americans would tolerate their data being "safely shared" with Europe's governments.
What? A storm during thanksgiving? Snow at Christmas! Playoffs? The superbowl !!!!! (5, for insanity) What was the topic again, Obamacare?
When they bought huge expensive SUVs for the cops almost a decade ago in Chicago ("news" for nerds), the guy in charge had the balls to point out that their dismal gas mileages was not worse than the abysmal mileage of the crown vics, therefore it was fine.
I don't expect the cops to drive priuses, but that really pissed me off.
Solar pressure? The only thing that works for attitude control is peer pressure (for lack of a timeout corner in orbit).
Tell Grandpa Hubble to shame Kepler into behaving.
What's really in the "John Doe Xrays" folder?
Surgeons were one of the few who couldn't easily "multitask" on the job.
Let me also move my Cyber Monday surgery, just to be safe.
Per Murphy's law, you do need two tape drives in that deposit box.
Didn't realize it was already St Patrick's day.

But that's offtopic for /. isn't it?
Slightly offtopic, but I can't resist reposting one of the Onion's best predictions (jan 17 2001)
That's a great antidote to skynet.
Teach it to post on social websites
It will take under 5 minutes before it realizes the best course of action it to nuke itself.
We don't want no evil Canadian paraplegic terrorist to assault our defenseless citizens with kind words.
Slow news day, and a quota of Linux stories that was unfulfilled for today, to they duped last week's "bashBuntu", since it worked pretty well.
There are quite a few shiny laptops I can sell you for that.
They incidentally come equipped with the internet.
I was unnecessarily hyperbolic. It's the H265 compression which requires decent fans to keep the solid-state parts from releasing magic smoke.
The decompression is a lot easier, but by the time you do it for 4k, I don't know that you can do it fanless yet.
I missed the part where there is a sizeable population with pitchforks to convince the people in power to tame the currency's volatility.

My living room is too quiet to put an H265 decoder in it.
It's not that content can't be properly produced or formatted. It's getting it to you that's the problem.

At least on the bitcoin dupes, they get to change the numbers. /. these days, that's a lot of editing.

As long as you sell first...
This is just a hyper-volatile investment which can be bartered against goods from people who are either gamblers or clueless.
All currencies are volatile to some extent, but this thing has no fundamentals to back it up.
