to offset the idiotic masses, voting power should be based on knowledge. for example, before each election, voter would take aptitude and knowledge test. that person's vote would then be multiplied by appropriate 'voting power'.
It only helps the 'squatters' that have been at a particular place for a long time. This obviously encourages inefficient use of space. New renters face higher rents because supply is artificially constricted by people not moving from their rent control apartments. Rent control also leads landlords into many unethical means of evicting tenants in order to get fair market value for their property. GET RID OF RENT CONTROL. The free market is far from perfect but it's much better than BS government regulation.
It's true! This probably was true ~2 yrs ago. I live in SF for social reasons but housing is not exactly cheap either. A decent 1 bedroom in same bulding as my condo just got rented for 1800/month.
One factor that needs to be controlled when discussing the value of degrees is IQ! I'd rather hire a MIT grad than some State U grad not because the wonderful course work but because he is statistically likely to have higher IQ. However, I'd take the State U grad (or high school dropout) if I knew his IQ was higher.
The reaction by school admins is mindless. If some other Goth dressing person was contemplating murder, would banning certain types of clothing make that person less or MORE likely to snap?
My employer tests at start of employment. When I was told of this, I told HR what an stupid policy this was (esp. in San Francisco) and ineffective drug tests were. The HR lady dropped her jaw when I admitted to being a pot smoker. I was still able to pass the stupid pee test...
aside from stress and age, another reason drug use could be high in tech is that tech people think independently and reject much of the govt BS about drugs and am willing to 'experiment'. I'm not saying drugs are safe... just that much of the "just say no" stuff has no real science behind it.
College is IMHO an inefficient means of obtaining knowledge. Intelligence is pretty much static at this point of one's life and real work teaches much more knowledge than class room environment. Geez... I learned more in first 6 months of work than in 4 yrs of school.
I doubt the various idiotic remarks were intended for the slashdot audience. For better or worse, the avg American voter is clueless and they will likely be fooled by Gore. The housewife in Peoria probably thinks Gore is 'cutting edge', 'plugged into the Info Highway', etc.
I hope some slashdot readers have/will send emails to mainstream news organizations so they might start potraying Gore accurately as the ignorant oppotunist that he is.
