  1. The dangerous path is the one where people form their opinions and ideals based almost entirely on Facebook or other social media.

  2. Was it just a regular outage that could have happened to anyone, or something very specific to their own infrastructure?

Just because a change was made at some point in the past, you don't get to just assume that everything would have been fine if Change X or Y hadn't been made. Oracle isn't a silver bullet.

This, and the obvious risk of issues anytime you make such a large change. You fix them and move on. "thousands of delayed packages" sounds like a blip for Amazon. Bad weather can do that.

  3. It was a carrot on an infinitely long stick.

I know. Of course you can install it. An appropriate slashdot question is 'will it work in barn?'

That is a complete nonsese. Let's say everyone will get $1000 UBI. Does this mean, that they will earn $1000 more of value? NO. It will inflate global prices about $1000 so prices will be (TODAY_PRICES + $1000), so they will gain no value at all. No one.

Well of course then you just raise UBI. Problem solved.

  7. Re:Why so low? on More Than One Third of Music Consumers Still Pirate Music (theguardian.com) · · Score: 1

The devaluation is causing them to do that? No, not really. The fact that they're being ripped off by the music labels forces them on the road to actually make a living more like.

Pretty much any musician isn't going to ignore recorded music simply to do live performances. That's just as fast a way to the poor house than not doing any gigs at all. Those who put a focus on live performances are likely to give recorded copies of their music away if anything (although their labels, if they have one, will most certainly forbid them from doing that.) as that's free promotion to get people to go to a show.

You completely misconstrue what I said. I never said they would forego recorded music. I said they would perform more live and hone that craft because that is where they can make more money.

  8. Re:Why so low? on More Than One Third of Music Consumers Still Pirate Music (theguardian.com) · · Score: 2

Or new music is crap and I already ripped/pirated everything I'll ever want to listen to decades ago.

There is great music still being made. I find new good stuff all the time, it just takes some work. IMO, the de-valuation of recorded music due to piracy and streaming has forced bands to make money the old fashioned way ... live performances. There are some really talented musicians out there honing their craft and putting on great shows while cranking out great recordings.

Also, Apple really focused on the I-Pad for schools. They were popular because "I-Pad" was equated with 'latest tech'. But tablets aren't good for schools, the notebook form factor is much more practical.

And then the cost factors became reality, making Chromebooks an easy choice for most schools.

Questions that come to mind are "how much emittance occurs which there is a high delta-T? How long does the coating last and how easily is it's emittance reduced by normal environmental conditions (dirt, microbials, etc)? How much would it cost? Any toxicity concerns?

  11. Ok, so any time you take a solar panel and add some kind of energy storage device, that's a story now? There are a lot of ways you can store the energy - many different battery types, pumped water storage, molten salt I suppose. This is just silly.

But this one is special, because it can "Bring Electricity To Rural and Underdeveloped Areas", unlike any other solar panel connected to a battery.

No, but if you look at the list of things the FDA is empowered to regulate, it pretty much falls into anything related to human health. Even cell phones and condoms, neither of which are food (for most I hope).
