What, you didn't keep all of your old Nintendo carts? Guess YOU are the one playing the pirated games then. Many of the rest of us still have the carts.
Yes agree. Odd that it seems to only occur after an extended period of time. My memory usage never seems to max out though so not sure what buffer is being filled but yes that seems to be it. I'd like more capable hardware but short of spending a mint I see no way to do that and I still have a POS FIOS Actiontech in the way!
I think some of this is the traffic usage. My WRT running 3rd party software reboots itself every night. If it doesn't then after about 3 days it will start acting funky. DD-WRT is the software FWIW. I seed torrents 24X7 but at a low(ish) bitrate - the many connections seem to be what is doing this.
A lot more to this guy you say? How do you know? He just FOLDED on this issue. What makes you think you can believe him on ANY OTHER issue he is talking about?
Oh heck yes! There have been multiple generations of this series. The older stuff like Tom Swift and his biplane perhaps not as interesting but there were at LEAST 3 generations after that! I actually collect some of the really old ones - now nearly 90 years old and have some of the 2nd and 3rd gen ones too, I think there's a 4th newest generation as well.
For stuff that is NOT dark, not super violent, and a decent read for younger people this stuff is great I think. It's like Sci-Fi Hardy Boys. When I was a kid I read every one of them the local library had in multiple cities.
The oldest Tom Swift books are now public domain it seems, holding one that old in your hands is pretty wild but be advised that they aren't terribly "PC" for the modern world, they depict stereo-types pretty badly in the oldest books. A window into that time I guess but I do find it bothersome sometimes. These are popular on eBay...
There was another bunch of books - Zip Zip was in the title. John Schealer was the author of these - I liked them as a kid too. Worth checking out although likely dated now like the old Tom swift books.
In general the populace of D.C. feels pretty defenseless and they are not exactly trusting of the police. For the record I live in a suburb of D.C. and know folks who live there. Corruption, lack of budget for enforcement and a whole host of issues trouble our capitol's populace. Not being able to own guns like most of the rest of our country and not having an elected representative to our Federal Govt. are two of their biggest beefs. The latter strong enough their gripe is expressed on their license tags! Many folks such as myself who live outside the city do not venture there given a choice.
It would not surprise me if a majority of the shootings revolve around drugs and gangs. The populace still feels powerless in a shooting gallery. Stray bullets have killed many and home invasions have been an issue in some areas. In general it's not a terribly nice place to be I think, at least in some of the more urban areas - much like many other cities I fear. FWIW people are already trying to purchase guns and the local Govt. is trying to place MANY restrictions on ownership - this ain't over by a long shot, people are getting angry...
I actually had a tech in a switching center call me - he concluded it was an issue with one of their peers when I could only hit certain sites intermittently and a few just fine. However when I finally got enough functionality to hit DSLreports.com I found a zillion others in my area with the same problems - days after Verizon declared it "fixed". I knew things were dorked when ONE machine out of 5 in my household worked and no others did despite multiple reboots. I never got an explanation except and only knew it was their issue after seeing others with the SAME problem.
I will give the tech guy credit though, when I let him know I knew what a traceroute etc. was he skipped the kindergarten B.S. and got down to it. Sadly none of their normal phone support had clue one about that stuff. I don't expect rocket scientists but come on bump me up or something! I couldn't even get hold of anyone till AFTER they thought it was closed - but my area still dorked. Think I got my credit? Yeah me either.
Funny you mention being kept in the loop. When they were straightening out my error the guy needed to transfer me from Texas to the repair center in Georgia. The guy started the transfer, stayed on the phone till they answered, told them who I was and why we were calling, and made sure the handoff was smooth!
Do you know how many times I have called Verizon abut an issue only to have their automated POS system dump me into the ether and drop my call? About 10 times easy - it's what they do when their network fucks up and they are deluged with calls! They just dump the overflow into the trash with no status given. Gee, what a contrast!
I'd have mentioned NewEgg but I have spoken to folks who have not had the best of experiences with them. Like TigerDirect it seems that not everyone loves them. I have had success with NewEgg but then I've also not ever had to return anything. Sadly Mwave seems to be falling behind NewEgg - I used to find them nearly equal but NewEgg's site rox and so do their prices usually. Monoprice is another decent site but again - never had to deal with a return with them. Their prices are cheap enough however that if I bought something accidentally I'd just keep it and order another. (lol)
Yup, this is indeed possible. But as a profiles user I'm glad it's staying and am happy for it no matter what the motivation might have been. It really is a nice feature for families who's members have different tastes.
I agree and would add that service for my Thinkpad via Lenovo was also outstanding. I erred when I filled out the online form, they called me within an hour to clarify (operator in Texas), offered to send me a part (!) for it or let me send the machine in, included a checkbox to NOT allow them to reformat it in the shipping box, and it was fixed FAST. The DHL driver actually picked up the box with the laptop in it within hours of my calling it in as ready to be taken - at like 7:00PM. I thought sure it would be the next day so his beeping the horn in my driveway was a pleasant surprise. Oh and the laptop was fixed on the first try and NOT formatted. Wow!
Likewise Amazon has been good. $50 coupon for my HD-DVD purchase, good service when things have gone wrong, they don't SPAM me to death, and in general do it right. Even their product recommendations are for things I might actually like instead of crap. not the cheapest but I like them - ordered a Kindle tonight actually.
I use AMX for corporate travel. Once when stranded due to an airline FUBAR I called them. The ticket guy told me, loud enough for the AMX guy to hear, that it was too late for the agent to book the flight. The agent said in my ear "watch this" and I was ON that flight - boy was the ticket guy pissed off! AMX ain't cheap but they DO customer service WELL.
So yeah, some companies do it right and those that do stand out and get talked about. I like many others was thrilled to see Netflix reverse on this - my SO doesn't lose her movie list as a result:-)

I could spend much time espousing unRAID but here it is in a nutshell....
Bunch of drives of whatever size, all but the parity drive are formatted ReiserFS. One drive, the parity drive, must be as big or bigger than all others. This drive stores parity for all other drives. Files are not spanned across drives nor is parity like normal RAID. This is good in that not all drives must spin to read or write a file. this is bad in that for reading you do not have the aggregate speed of multiple drives together. For normal use at home, in my case a media server and backup solution, performance is acceptable - especially for streaming to my HTPC (XBMC on Linux).
If a single drive fails I have access to ALL data and need to replace it with a drive as big or bigger than what failed. If TWO drives fail I lose data but instead of losing the entire data set I lose just the data on those two drives. To keep from losing all data with most RAID you need spares - yucky for home use. Since the drives are standard ReiserFS I can also pull a drive and read off it's data should I need to - most RAID I'm aware of cannot do this. There are companies specializing in data restoration from various types of RAID for a reason...
So, cheap hardware, low power usage (Celeron and drives spun down), pretty safe storage of data, and it's actually not very loud - I use 5in3 SATA cages in the new box, 4in3 CM cages in the IDE. I've not had issues with mine crashing either and if you wanted an FTP server could probably be setup.
Oh 2 be fair there are some downsides. Write speed is slow, security a little weak but there is some, disk space not always used 100% efficiently, and the hardware supported while good isn't HUGE. I think you're limited to "only" 14 drives too:-P
Fire away here or on their support board if you have questions...
Umm, they were killing WITH guns beating rates of other cities that allowed them. Apparently the BAN on guns had little effect for those who were willing to break the law.
Shops in D.C. are already being approached by citizens looking to buy handguns BTW.
Been using unRAID for years now. One system is all IDE, the other all SATA. The IDE is a mix of drives all no bigger than 500gigs - 12 of them. The SATA is 9 drives with 4 of them as big as 1TB and the others at 750 or so. The software is well supported, constantly improved, the source for the GPL parts is available, and the author doesn't mind people trying to expand what it can do. It's write speed is indeed slow but they have a caching scheme now to help fix that - I've not tried it. Read speeds are as fast as I get from a Windows server and the thing is fast enough to stream multiple copies of HD video across a network. You can mount each disk as a share or setup spanned shares for data access. It doesn't support FTP out of the box and it's NOT "RAID5" but I find it superior in that I can have mixed drive sizes and spin down drives not being used.
I think you really ought to read up on what some of those IEDs are being constructed with and from to better understand the situation. It's amazing what an artillery shell strategically placed can do. Now where do you get these shells? Perhaps by plinking someone else who is in possession of a few of them?
I somewhat agree. however I will popint out that shooting a soldier who is better armed than you is a very quick way to bump up your arms. In fact I believe that during WWII we armed a populace with guns that were only intended to be used once - to gain better arms. One need only look to Iraq where a populace with far poorer arms than our army is having an effect. Think Red Dawn here... A good hunting rifle can plink someone in a turret from quite a ways if properly sighted.
And how well exactly do you think that has worked out for D.C.? Hint: Shootings on a DAILY basis. More than once nicknamed the murder capitol. Yeah, it was a nice try but it didn't quite work out did it?
Wow! Do you like actually bleat nervously when you laugh? I'm not sure I've ever seen someone post something that so clearly makes them look like a sheep.
Certainly I can see that YOU as a sheep might not want to carry a gun but do NOT think that the way YOU feel should be forced upon everyone else! I do not own a gun, I might like to, in fact with the way things are going that urge grows every day. In a situation where I'm being mugged I might not want one, when the guy attempts to pull my SO by the hair into an alley to rape her I might very well want one!
I'm not sure I agree about the less guns being safer thing. Washington D.C. has had a ban on guns for some time but has at times been the "murder capitol" - I live nearby so I get to hear daily about all of the shootings down there. Now when they outlaw guns who exactly will be turning their's in and who will be keeping them? If someone is going to break the law to rob you why would they NOT break the law to use a gun? If you are a law abiding citizen you won't have a gun when someone kicks in your door for a nice home invasion now will you? If you could own one and the ownership was high in your area, think Texas, how many home invasions do you think would occur? Blast the first SOB back out the door with a shotgun and I promise you the others will think twice!
I live in a state that ALLOWS guns, I live in an area where gun ownership is common. In fact I have been in stores and chatted with guys who had holstered firearms and didn't get excited about it. We have concealed carry here too and I'll never forget the day 10 of my friends got to talking and ALL pulled out guns, cleared them, and passed them around to check out. I was literally the only one not packing!:-O
Presently I do not own a gun, never have. I cannot easily do the concealed carry thing either and I'm not sure I'd want to. I have seriously considered purchasing a small short shotgun for home defense purposes only - something like a Mossler Persuader. I have no need to hunt or target practice, it would be kept by my bed and hopefully never discharged.
With the upcoming elections looking like we may have restrictions on some weapons placed upon us (or more likely ammo) I'm considering an AK clone too - just to store away in the garage. Many of the folks I work with are gun rights guys and they do NOT like which way the wind is blowing - sadly I agree with them. That this decision was as close as it was is telling...
What, you didn't keep all of your old Nintendo carts? Guess YOU are the one playing the pirated games then. Many of the rest of us still have the carts.
Very secure? I thought it was still running Safari, no? And if it was so secure why did it take less than a week to break it?
How exactly is my identity going to be stolen off of my phone....
Irreversibly? Really? So those folks still do not have working phones? Yeah, thought so. Not as bad as all that now is it?
Yes agree. Odd that it seems to only occur after an extended period of time. My memory usage never seems to max out though so not sure what buffer is being filled but yes that seems to be it. I'd like more capable hardware but short of spending a mint I see no way to do that and I still have a POS FIOS Actiontech in the way!
I am seeing no D-Link routers listed on the Tomato page and certainly no N routers. Can someone elaborate? I'd love to find a more capable router...
I think some of this is the traffic usage. My WRT running 3rd party software reboots itself every night. If it doesn't then after about 3 days it will start acting funky. DD-WRT is the software FWIW.
