The exact same question I asked when I heard about this. I was "told" by a coworker who had recently flow that lighters weren't allowed on flights but that matches weren't getting yanked?!
Dunno' but that's the only explanation I've been given and it sounded like B.S. to me - I've not flown since the 11th...
That's actually pretty sad then. I need to check this out - runWIN2K but have never had anything that I felt needed to be encrypted. I seem to recall that the Admin gets an escrow key and that it can be removed from that account (?) at the risk of losing data if things go badly but... If all yo uneed is a password and no per file kind of key then it pretty well sux unless you encrypt everything and even then.... YUCK! Going to have to research this some because if that's the case then the cracking they did had NOTHING to do wiht the 40bit encryption and had everyhing to do with the crappy LanMan hash stored by default. Hell there are tools that will inject the password of your choosing as Admin and allow you to get in and grab the other account's hashes for cracking pretty easily. So long as you can return the original SAM to it's previous state (easy) then you can crack a second admin account, logon with it, and then pop the Administrator account. Been there, done that - it really wasn't that hard. It took 5 machines to crack those passwords? They must've been in a big hurry (lol). If your right this is a joke:-)
Okay, breaking WIN2K passwords - no biggie. Getting around the NTFS file permissions, no biggie. Cracking a WORD password, brute force later versions, others trivial, no biggie.
Getting the file decrypted that had been encrypted using the WIN2K filesystem?
Umm, okay I want to know what software was used to attack this please. I've yet to see anything out there designed to break file system encryption in WIN2K but if someone has a link I'd REALLY appreciate it:-) Just to hang on to mind you, no real use for it of course...
Oh, and two guys bebopping around in Afghanistan had ready access to this? I think I smell fish here!
Why is he an idiot? He had C4 of some sort in the shoes and det cord that could've ignited it had he managed to get the match to light the cord. It WOULD have worked. Ask a military or demo person about it. The det cord would supposedly have burned hot enough to lite C4 but the downside is that det cord that can do that is HARD to light with a match. Ergo - he picked the right tool for the "job" but an observant flight attendant stopped him! Yeah, I'd question blowing one's self up but at least he was doing it in a way that would have the intended effect!
As for the encryption - duh! READ the article, it was on a HD that didn't belong to him. The report was a debriefing of the guy written by a debriefer. He had NO control over what encryption was done on it - it could've been skywritten from an airplane for all the "control" he had over it. The mistake in this case was NOT his, it was some other moron. (sigh)
It used ot be that the French version was horribly cripled. Lotus folks actually compared it to sending mail on a postcard:-)
Anyway, it was done this way becaue th eFrench did NOT want the US Govt. to have an easier time decrypting the documens than did the French Govt. so they required a really poor encryption be used in Notes. Once the US Govt. dropped it's export restricitons the French Govt. lifted this requirement since this placed us all on a "level" playing field. One of the point revisions of R5 brought nearly all of the versions together except the French I THINK. Due to the extreme crippling they had to do the French may have had their own upgrade or have been forced to reissue certs and IDs - I'm fuzzy on this. I believe if you spend some time on the Notes site you'll find your answer.
On a plus note - Lotus has determined that 128 just isn't good enough. They mentioned plans to upgrade the crypto at Lotusphere last year but it probably won't be there till RNext goes gold. If there's one product out there that actually seems to care about security and was WAY ahead of the certificate thing it's Notes. And no, they aren't perfect...
Try reading the FAQ dumbass. It's a diesel though so it probably pollutes more than an LEV gas vehicle but it's not the SMOG monster you thought it was.
This wasn't meant to be bought by Joe Consumer. It's custom built from scratch on top of a Mercedes chassis. It costs "more than a Hummer less than a Boeing". I cannot imagine a celebrity taking the time to go get a trucker's license to drive one either.
It weighs like 20Klbs and can't be terribly "fast". What would the possible attraction be, even for folks like Arnold. This is a true expeditionary vehicle, I cannot imagine owning it myself as the maintenance alone would kill me. Water warmed fuel tanks?! Ouch this thing is built like a tank!
It's the same cabin height as the original chassis. It's not top heavy, according to the designers, because heavy things like fuel tanks, generators, batteries, etc. etc. have been mounted down low. It's also got an adjustable suspension so I would assume that high angles of attack could be compensated for.
You'll also find, when you read the FAQ, that this isn't an SUV for climbing hills and trails - it's for "exploring". It's supposed to be capable of some challenging offroad but it wasn't built for the "let's see what it can do" mentality. I also doubt it's meant to be driven very fast on the highway. It requires a trucker's license for vehicles equipped with "air brakes" so I don't think they were shooting for "sports car" handling. Hell, the tires weight as much as 400lbs depending on what set it's got loaded. This thing is a beast.
It's big, probably slow as heck, and not something I'd want to encounter in rush hour. Hell, if he hit the horn would I lose my hearing AND my window glass?!
Folks such as myself haven't purchased a PVR becasue we would like the option of archiving shows off to something other than crappy VCR tapes. Being able to setup a PC server with a bunch of my favorite shows or burn them to a writable DVD is a BIG attraction. I've watched the TIVO hacking with GREAT interest but it's not "there" yet. It doesn't help that they cannot even discuss this on the d*mned TIVO discussion board!
The Replay on the other hand, while apparently lacking some of the AWESOME smarts the TIVO has for program guides\recording, is MUCH easier to grab video from. TIVO just released their second revision but nothing there seems to make my needs any easier to fulfill (okay USB might make it a little easier but..) meanwhile the ReplayTV boxes look like a homerun.
I'm going to wait a bit longer before purchasing to see if the Replay hackers run into problems and to see if the TIVO folks finally get something out that will do what I want. It's a REAL shame that TIVO isn't supporting this or I'd be all over it. I still might buy a TIVO if I spot one cheap at WalMart but so far my local shop has had NONE. (shrug)
Anyway, that's why this is important to some of us. The manufacturer isn't giving us what we want but the hackers ARE and my hat's off to them for it.
P.S. No, I'm now willing to buy an ATI card and try to do this myself. I want it EASY for the woman to use too.
Sorry, it had to be said. Judging from some of the experiences of others here, why in this world would you want to use this product? Seriously, even if it were best of breed I'm pretty sure I wouldn't touch it or reccomend it to anyone based upon the way this guy treats others. This thread has mentioned MANY other alternatives, surely one of those groups could be more helpful to you?
Umm, there are a few people running WIN2K who have had MASSIVE problems even after a supposed fix was released. While this software used to be considered cream of the crop it would seem that Nero is coming on strong - for a LOWER price. Users of EX-CD were forced to pay upgrades for WIN2K and now for XP, Roxio is shooting themselves in the foot. A quick search yielded this thread which seems to confirm this.
Now that they've done this deal with GraceNote I'm certainly less than thrilled with them. Nero will probably be my next purchase if HotBurn Pro and CloneCD don't continue to fullfill my needs. Hrm, and this DMCA crap with CloneCD sux but I guess it makes a point...
Bzzzt, wrongo. Distributed.net's RC5 cracking program uses 100% of the CPU and I've had ALL of my overclocked computers working on that for YEARS now. Stable? Yup, rock solid. Granted those systems aren't pushed as far to the edge as my primary workstation but they're all overclocked and two are running dual overclocked CPUs as well. Heat load in the room is pretty bad unfortunatly as is noise.
As a result I tried using water as a coolant and using Peltiers in order to truly cool down my CPU in the primary workstation. I sourced a fountain pump, trans cooler, large bucket, and built a plastic cap from PVC placed over a standard heatsink. Below this I placed a surplus Peltier and away I went! Ran great too! I placed the trans cooler with a fan on it outside my room's window and noiced one BIG difference - NO NOISE! Talk about a relief, it was great.
Eventually I did run into a problem and it did kill some hardware. My system locked up for some unknown reason. The result was that I no longer had a heat load on the cooling device - a large block of ICE was the result. Was pretty weird to see that when I cam home too! As the outer edges of the ice melted it would drip onto my video card - doh! I ended up losing my video card and having to use a hairdryer on my CPU socket to remove the condensation that had melted. There are ways to prevent most of this but at the time they weren't well known and never thought that a lockup would have this result - I learned the hard way:-)
Thus ended my particular attempt at water cooling. I DO think it's viable though and the newer systems coming out are MUCH more professional than what I had cobbled together several years ago. I'm tempted to try again but I'm starting to grow weary of the Distributed.net contest. My registered E-mail (one registered in the first few months) is no longer valid, I no longer compete with friends for position as they've moved on, and I seldom check my ranking anymore (shrug). I've also not played a graphics intensive game lately that would require such speed. I used to be able to nearly double the speed of a CPU by dropping it's temp into the basement, now with my 1.4Gig Athlon I'm not so sure that I'll get very much out of it. Okay, it is overclocked some but not much - it's a sickness I tell you!
Oh, and I DID see noticable framerate increases by overclocking my CPUs, especially on floating point dependant games of old. These days yes mostly th evideo card is the bottleneck but for programs like Distributed.net it's sure not a problem. CPU temp rises several degrees running such a program if you've got a marginal heatsink.
Do any rendering or compiling? Password cracking? Consider overclocking, done RIGHT with adequate cooling it IS worth it. You spend DAYS rendering something right? What if you could cut 1/3rd off of that? Worth it? I'd do it - at least until I can buy a 1.5gig X 2 AMD system cheaply:-) Cracked passwords in a noticably shorter time and dual CPUs makes it even better. Until I see a good distributed password cracker that actually works for the WIN32 platform faster CPU speeds is what I need. Heh, and yes this is for legit purposes so leave me alone about it.
P.S. Yes, I hop-up up cars too. If you're afraid of monkeying with one of those then I'm not surprised you won't fiddle with a computer's guts either. BTW, what's a warranty? I've not had one on a computer in years as I build all of my own and save lot's of cash (shrug).
Ever seen a frog dropped into boiling water? He jumps right out! Now drop him in cold water and turn on th eheat - he'll happily sit there till he's par boiled and DEAD. The frog is yu with your head in the sand.
Do you even have any idea what behaviour is considered illegal? You may think you do but you may be VERY surprised one day. In states like Virginia they're passing laws that give strength to those damned shrinkwrap licenses. Since you're not a criminal and don't intend ever to be one I'm sure you read those right? How about the DMCA - have you ever READ that piece of legislation? Did you know it contains a provision specifically to protect the design of boat hulls? Yup, "Huh?!" is exactly what I said when this was pointed out to me. The DMCA session at DEFCON was most interesting, a more F*CKED law I've never seen - it contradicts itself in several places and even redefines "fair use".
How about the new "Anti-Terrorism" bills that have been passed recently. Any ideas what they have to say? Sure you've never broken any of the laws you don't know about? How come John Ashcroft has ignored SIX letters by a congressional subcomitee inquiring about these "new powers" to testify? We've had more than one THOUSAND people locked up since 9/11 who haven't been charged - seems you might not actually HAVE to break a law to be held. But hey, you'll never raise suspicion right? No chance you might not piss off someone at random who might be able to give you attention you don't deserve right? I could even be as simple as cutting off the wrong person in traffic if the abuse gets too bad.
Tell you what, you're obviously a good responsible citizen who votes and as a Slashdot reader you probably don't much like the DMCA. Why don't you go find out if your representative voted for that law so you'll know what to do come next election. What's that? It was passed on a voice vote* and you can't find out who voted for it? Gee, I guess things aren't quite as bright and cheery in your world as you thought huh?
*FWIW, I've been told that the DMCA was and was NOT voice voted depending upon who I've spoken to about it - it could be FUD. I have no doubt though that getting a rep to explain clearly their position on this piece of garbage to a constituant would be difficult. Som of the tacked on provisions to that law are a joke! The boat hull thing is a good example of this.
Provide a ref please! I smell FUD

MAME On Xbox

That's a pretty bold statement. Care to provide a reference to back it up? WHY would they come after him for releasing a game that help sell their boxes and fills their coffers? Yeah, they may come after you for having used an XBox dev kit and not paying royalty fees (if you didn't pay the fee) but that's NOT a DMCA violation! That's a licensing issue and perfectly legal even though it sux. Hell, sell the software, pay MSFT their fee, make money. He may not have the XBox license but he obviously has a good friend that does...
As for his statement about no one being able to play these games without an XBox dev kit check out the date that it was posted. At that time no one HAD an XBox unless they were devleoping for it. (duh) Now that the XBox has been released perhaps this has changed and it could now be played by others IF it could be released?
I have to wonder what sort of trouble he'd get into releasing MAME like this though. Sure, MAME itself isn't illegal but the RIPped ROMs can be. What sort of license is MAME devleoped under?
To date not many people have been persecuted for having ROMs but releasing code like this might just be enough to wake them from their slumber - especially if money were being made from the sale of the software. No way could they release with ROMs so folks would HAVE to go to the 'net to get them. Not quite the same as Bleem! (RIP) but close enough in what might happen after the release. He would probably win in court but those who hosted ROMs might not find the climate quite so nice afterwards. Just a guess though....
Anyway, you seem awful sure MSFT would go after them with the DMCA - show me something that proves this. A press statement to that effect would be nice but don't ASSume they would do this and state it as if it were fact please. If someone has a legal license to the dev kit and pays royalties what control exactly does MSFT have? And why exactly wouldn't they "approve" of this?
I spoke to the staff member here who's bitching loudest about this. I asked for a specific example. The example I was given was ToolTalk of all things (one of our faves!). This person claims that there used to be code out there in your database for this that had been pulled. A search I've just done turned this up -> http://www.securityfocus.com/cgi-bin/vulns-item.pl ?section=exploit&id=122 You'll note that exploit source exists. I will ask this teammate for more a more specific explanation for statement. It's possible that a specific piece of code isn't there and that the original source was SecurityFocus. If that's the case then an apology is in order although my getting this teammate to admit this might be the case is unlikely (ahem).
I will sat this about SecurityFocus - when my team is asked to evaluate a piece of software we've never heard of your site is the FIRST place I look. More than once I've found juicy tidbits that have allowed me to improve a customer's security. PacketStorm is a daily read (cough) and I try to keep up with BugTraq as well - your archive of that is a BIG help. with all of the crap going on in the security field do please pardon my suspicious nature:-)
For those of you who may not quite understand - the crap that Microsoft is pulling, along with all of these jerks who are against full disclosure, is making MY JOB harder! No one person can find everything in all of the packages out there. Most customers will not simply apply patches because a vendor says so and MANY cannot keep up with the fast pace of exploits. For that matter we've got a flippin' team that has to struggle with this and it's not easy. Frcing all of the exploits ot go underground by killing full disclosure will make this harder.
Remember what Microsoft said to L0PHT years ago about their VPN software when they were contacted? I have no doubt they would do that again today if they could sweep it under the rug. When you're working with a paranoid customer (think bank or oil company level of worry) they want a SECURE and STABLE system. That means when you tell them to make a change you'd better have a list of passwords in your hot little hands to prove your point! That means excercising the vulnerability and playing the part of a black hat. We need the code folks and no one group working alone can develop it all, it must be shared. If the punk crackers get it too then fine, they'd have developed it themselves and circulated it amongst themselves anyway....
Gee, maybe that explains why http://packetstormsecurity.org has had the rate of submissions slow from many a day to one or two every couple of days. I KNOW vulnerabilities are being found but it's REALLY hard to explain to management why they MUST rollout a security patch if I cannot PROVE to them that, yes its a problem! Has everyone rolled over?
WTF is wrong with these folks?! I can see it now - we're all going to have to sign up to some sort of subscription service to learn about the various vulnerbailities. No doubt it won't be free, right? I have a VERY hard time believing that @Stake aka L0PHT signed up for this. My opinion of those fine folks just dropped into the basement. I never thought I'd see the day when they would cowtow to Microsoft, it's a sad day indeed for the security industry.
Who are we doing this for? The children? National Security? Oh wait - Bill's cash. Seems to have greased the DOJ wheels pretty good, guess things are bad all over when the security industry sucks it up too. This just makes me sick.
Any good full disclosure sites out there taking over where PacketStorm died? If so I'd appreciate some URLs. BTW, some of the folks on our team swear the SecurityFocus has pulled data OUT of their vulnerability database in recent months. Cannot confirm it for sure but when you know you looked it up previously and then it's not there later you have to begin to wonder....
P.S. If RFP signs on Hell will have frozen over. Thankfully he doesn't appear to take cash for his efforts!
Not listed i their Hacks section and I've only found a brief mention of the DESIRE to do this in the Forums area. If you could provide more guidance as to where this is being done I'm interested!
I had researched the 501 a good bit when DISH offered me (FINALLY!) an upgrade to it somewhat cheap. The research I did at the time seemed to indicate that an upgrade was as easy as sticking in a new drive. I also found that the 501 was getting VERY mixed reviews as it's got bugs and is on the way out so support is less than stellar. Needless to say I did NOT buy it. When I saw this response I aain went looking for information on the 501 to prove\disprove what you've said - it seems I may have confused the 501 with the DISHPLAYER line. The DISHPLAYER appears to be the one with the abandoned Microsot code. Bleah! After all of the research and pondering I did before rejecting the 501 I'm pretty surprised I screwed up and confused the two so badly - thank you for clarifying this. At least my conculsion, that the 501 was NOT a box I wanted, seems to have been sound (sigh).
For those who spot this thread down the road and are interested, here's another VERY good URL that I failed to provide before - it's for general PVR informaiton and is where I (again) researched the PVR501 -> http://www.dbsforums.com/cgi-bin/forumdisplay.cgi? action=topics&forum=PVR+Information+Forum&number=1 4&DaysPrune=2&LastLogin=
"it's safe to say that the effect exists and is significant" Oh really? How exactly did you come up with this?! I thought the "jury" was still out but you've decided that it's "significant"? All on your own? Show me some data not produced by some self serving objective organization and maybe I'll start to believe this. You're one of those people that want to wrap their kids in cotton before sending them to school aren't you? No violence ever, nothing but soft sounds, can't let them live a little can you? Yuck.
You're not interested in video games, you admit that, perhaps you simply don't know squat about them? It's about competition and fun, pretend it's a fancy game of tag. I've played video games for as long as they've been out for computers and on consoles before that. I got faster reflexes, spatial reasoning improvements for finding my way out of maps, and was forced to learn more about my computer when I screwed it up:-). Do I run around with a shotgun shooting at people in real life? Nope! I can tell the difference between right and wrong. Do some people have trouble with that concept? Sure, lot's of them do. Now what makes you think those same people wouldn't find something else to screw them up if it wasn't computer games? I'm sorry, I just don't buy this idea that games are screwing people up. Do you protest WWF Wrestling too? Paintball?
Hrm, and as for playing as a "Nazi" you don't. You play as a German Soldier - did it occur to you that they were people too? We sent KIDS to fight in that war and so did the Germans. Do you REALLY think all of those KIDS were out there goostepping and believing in everything Hitler said? Kripes, they wanted to live just like our kids did.
Come bitch to me about a new game centered around running a concentration camp and I'll be right there with you but I see no reason to get upset with simply playing on one side or another. Flight sims have allowed you to fly German planes and bombers for YEARS - why did no one bitch about that?!
Quite honestly, the VERY worst in-game scene I've ever seen was the one where you play an AMERICAN soldier who encounters some of his own men captured in jail cells. Shooting them gave you AMMO and HEALTH points! That was an iD game too as I recall and I thought the idea of being rewarded for shooting your own men in their jail cells was disgusting. The men were supposed to be in pain and you were "helping them" but I found that FAR worse than anything I'd seen before or I've seen since. Sad, I can't even remember which game that was but I remember how much I did NOT like that scene. Multiplayer game play was fine though:-)
No mod points today but this guy deserves them. He has some interesting points and while I'm not sure I agree with them it's worth considering.
Yes, this is an investment protection system but one really has to wonder how much investing will be done if it didn't exist. Things cost much more to create now than they did previously, at least some things do. I'm not sure how this would all end up if these protections were removed...
Then they have NOTHING to fear! The Felton lawsuit was thrown out. Seems that the threat to sue when you don't actually follow through is perfectly okay and they refused to hear the Felton case. It's okay to threaten someone with financial ruin unless you follow through with it. This is insane IMO as if it were a gun to the head they would certainly have head the case.
I've been waiting and watching the various PVRs waiting for on that will do what I want. This one was actually looking like it might come close to it. TiVO would be perfect for me if it would allow me to get the video off and onto another media like a VCD or DVD-R but alas the work to do this is more than I'd like, it's unsupported code, and the primary support forum for TiVO usrs (not owned by them BTW) BANS discussions about doing this!
So, TiVO ain't it. The DISH 501PVR (I'm a DISH user) apparently uses crap Microsoft code that's been *surpise* ABANDONED by Microsoft, and I see no light at the end of the tunnel for the next DISH PVR but they say it'll be Linux based.
Helllooo companies. I'm a consumer. I have money I wish to spend on a VCR like device of commercial production quality. Here are my requirements in order to pry the dead presidents from my paws:
Record shows, NOT time slots!
Some sort of "season pass" deal like the TiVO.
The ability to add larger HDs when I desire (PVR501 is cake to upgrade)
There should be support or SDK made available, there shouldn't be stupid lawsuits against people hacking the box.
The box should support multiple tuners so I can watch and record.
I should be able to pause live TV.
I want to be able to fast forward past commercials. IF they want me to watch the commercials stop making them insipid and show me something interesting - and not 50times a day!
Most importantly, give me a method of archiving on media like a DVD-R or VCD. I'd really like to be able to edit these on my PC before final archiving. I'm doing this from VCR now and it sux.
I, as a consumer, want a box like this. I will pay cash for it and I'll pay a bunch for it. You can make all the noise you want but I'll have what I want on way or another. TiVO is nearly there! If the hackers manage to get it to the point where the shows can be pulled off easily I'll buy one and mod the crap out of it to get what I want. Either build what I want and let me use it or lose my money and interest! This box was looking good - thanks alot jerks. TiVO isn't yet integrated with DISH but with the possible purchase of DirectTV it could be - I hope. These lawsuits are NOT endearing me or my dollars to the networks.

One of these days I'll own a PVR but NOT until I'm able to do what I want with it - by hook or by crook.=!
So long as you can return the original SAM to it's previous state (easy) then you can crack a second admin account, logon with it, and then pop the Administrator account. It used ot be that the French version was horribly cripled. Lotus folks actually compared it to sending mail on a postcard :-)
IF this is kosher then it should be visible to all.

:-)
:-) Cracked passwords in a noticably shorter time and dual CPUs makes it even better. Until I see a good distributed password cracker that actually works for the WIN32 platform faster CPU speeds is what I need. Heh, and yes this is for legit purposes so leave me alone about it.
There are ways to prevent most of this but at the time they weren't well known and never thought that a lockup would have this result - I learned the hard way
Thus ended my particular attempt at water cooling.
Worth it? I'd do it - at least until I can buy a 1.5gig X 2 AMD system cheaply
:-)
I will sat this about SecurityFocus - when my team is asked to evaluate a piece of software we've never heard of your site is the FIRST place I look. More than once I've found juicy tidbits that have allowed me to improve a customer's security. PacketStorm is a daily read (cough) and I try to keep up with BugTraq as well - your archive of that is a BIG help. with all of the crap going on in the security field do please pardon my suspicious nature
Thanks!

For those who spot this thread down the road and are interested, here's another VERY good URL that I failed to provide before - it's for general PVR informaiton and is where I (again) researched the PVR501 -> http://www.dbsforums.com/cgi-bin/forumdisplay.cgi
Yuck.
:-). Paintball?
:-)
You're not interested in video games, you admit that, perhaps you simply don't know squat about them? It's about competition and fun, pretend it's a fancy game of tag. I've played video games for as long as they've been out for computers and on consoles before that. I got faster reflexes, spatial reasoning improvements for finding my way out of maps, and was forced to learn more about my computer when I screwed it up
Hrm, and as for playing as a "Nazi" you don't.
Multiplayer game play was fine though
Must wait 2 mins - bleah! :-)
I've been waiting and watching the various PVRs waiting for on that will do what I want. This one was actually looking like it might come close to it. TiVO would be perfect for me if it would allow me to get the video off and onto another media like a VCD or DVD-R but alas the work to do this is more than I'd like, it's unsupported code, and the primary support forum for TiVO usrs (not owned by them BTW) BANS discussions about doing this!
. cg i?action=topics&forum=TiVo+Underground&number=6&Da ysPrune=10&SUBMIT=Go [TiVO Underground]
