I will laugh so incredibly hard when EVERY Government server running NT gets cracked tommorow. I can just imagine Bill getting really pissed, and using that NSA_key to his advantage.
I also find it rather ironic that the.gov decides to get it's own url(maybe server?) for this release, but doesn't release the docs in ascii or any other large formats(ie. lotus). They also refuse to compress anything, i'll remember this strongly as i download my 432k.wpd.
good idea, but i woulnd't want to be the beta tester. If a program crashes on your computer the worst case scenario is that you loose your computer. But if a contact seg-faults you could be in for blindness.
lets take a medium sized buisness network, 200 workstations, and 8 servers.
319$ X 200 computers = 63,800 dollars.
or upgrade and its= 43,800 dollars
reinstall on the servers, each server would require the 25 user liscense. 8 X $3,999 = 31,992
or to upgrade = 15,992
Now to use linux (if they choose the expensive redhat route) it will be $70 X 200 for the workstations = 14,000
and 8 X 140("secure server edition") = $1120
so to upgrade the microsoft network it costs: $57,792
and a new microsoft network costs: $95,792
while a new linux network only costs: 15,120
now neither of those is cheap, but it's obvious that linux is a **much** cheaper route. and i don't know many people who would be happy to dish out $95,792, even if it is chicken feed, for a network. Now they could always go the cheap linux route and download redhat for free(or slackware or any other disrib).
yeah i agree. speaking also as a highschool student with a palm. Luckily I've about reached the phase where the jaws don't drop as much when i whip it out to write my homework down. However most people are stunned by the price when i tell them(especially when i tell them it was the cheap model at 230 dollars)
i see a LOT of potential for these in the future, but first they need to be water/drop/and scratch proofed. I've dropped mine twice from about 3 feet onto carpet, and that's plenty. Also a girl I sit next to has spilled juice on her books several times this year, so i wouldn't trust her with one.
I think these will really start to catch on when they're the size of one sheet of paper(8.5inchesX 11 inches, of coarse not that thin), can store the equivilant of 8 700 page text books, have color screens, and cost less than 200 dollars. Until then only the few geeks of us will us them.
yeah devel versions are cool. and the neatest thing (to me) is that i've (unknowingly) been using slackware 7.0 for about 3 days now. It just makes me all fuzzy inside.
also perhaps and addition to/. where we could specify what moderations to exclude. so if you were mr spock you could ignore everything "funny". and if you were the over worked kirk you could ignore everything but funny.
basically here's how adults seem to think of us adolesents
if he's a geek -- he's a hacker(insert cracker) who likes to break into government agencies
if he's normal -- he's hiding something
if he's odd -- give him special attention
if he's viloent -- blame soceity
if he's lazy -- blame the school system, but keep giving the military a 500 billion dollar budjet while you stiff the schools and nasa
if he's not interested in science -- make the class more boring -- subtract more money from the schools and nasa's budjet, this kid doens't like science so we have no need for them..
Yeah, how would you like it if some other busybody thought athletics was so goodfor you that it should be part of the curriculum too? Mandatory little league, basketball, etc.
kasparov wasn't playing the ENTIRE world by a long shot. I'll bet about 250,000 people at the most. Also deep blue makes logical decisions. Humans don't-we make emotional decisions. Deep blue chooses a move because it has the least possibity of error. Also you should remember that a group of 20 really good chess players could have been there. If they all voted for the most logical move it could get drowned out by the other 249,980 people. Many people would vote for a move purely because everyone else voted for it-it may have nothing to do with which move is best.
I would like to see a distributed chess match. You'd have teams A and B. Each team would get 1 month between moves. When it was b's turn team b would split all the possible moves up amoung their computers-and have each computer test all moves and all possible counter moves within their move range. Then chose the move that puts the least amount of your men at risk(rate them according to points) and gives you the best counter move(killing the highest person on their team according to points). Then let the computers go at it! I think this would be a MUCH more exciting match-because we've alread proven that a computer can beat the best human. Now we can watch the computers play each other.
because the ip numbers will go faster than we think they will(especially if sun gets their way). so we should make a wealth of them so that we aren't required to fully update the ip system anytime soon. I just hope that people make all computers, routers etc IPv7-10 compliant-so that we won't have to ditch good equipment when everyone needs to upgrade.
I have on of those write-right screen overlays that makes the palm screen seem more like paper-and it also prevents it from getting nasty scratchs. I'm wondering if this works with those? it says they go over the screen-so that may be something to concider before you fork over 70 bucks. or will i have to pay extra money for the "write-right compliant" one?
if you look in the newest linux journal there is an add for the happy hacking keyboard claiming that it now connects to palms-and it's cheaper than that other keyboard that was made for a palm.
i think most people are willing to accept that maybe a processor isn't working properly. but when the company stops orders, starts them back up, and stops them again. that's when i draw my line. I'm sure quite a few people are highly aggrivated with apple right now.
I remember Apple's promise to commitment which made many iMacs never make it to shelves. They tested the computers BEFORE they went out to market. It seems now they're loosing their quality dedication, this is the sort of problem that should have easily been noticed during all those quake3-photoshop tests.

from what i've heard there were storms in Redmond so we can't blame any of this on Microsoft

maybe they haven't spoken up because the NSA would "dispose" of them and their familys. That would be enough to persuade me to keep it shut.
