I understand what you're saying (I think) but I've always wondered (and this is from a hardware-guy's perspective) wouldn't you rather have one big monitor, than two small monitors? I know there may be a significant price difference, but the whole concept of bigger=better seems to be a nomenclature that itself keeps expanding when it comes to screen size. If you can learn to enjoy the multiple desktop feature that corychristison is talking about, couldn't that be as good?
Good point. However I'd like to point out that the prison system is a private company with vested interest in having "clients". If no one breaks any laws, then these companies have a lot to lose.
I don't know. I've been on slashdot for a few years only. I posted regularly and have always had excellent karma. And yet I never got mod points. Then I stopped visiting slashdot because of all of the bitching and worthless arguing and negativity. I only came back here a few weeks ago. But right when I "rejoined" I got 15 mod points. I spent them all in one day. Then the next day I got 15 more. Also spent them in one day. I have not gotten anymore since then. So I'm in the same boat as you regarding understanding why/how I got mod points. I assume it's random, maybe based on karma?
You people who believe you'd run a functioning society without taxes and the things it pays for are completely deluded.
In a taxless society, there would be no one to run it other than those with wisdom and experience. But they wouldn't "run" the society as we understand it today.
You would not end up in some libertarian fantasy of a self regulating society. You'd end up in a shit hole of a society in which things like roads and schools don't work and don't get funded.
Again, I think you're missing the point. Roads? Why would there be this need for roads? If you walk through the forest a path will naturally develop. And schools? Why would we need schools? Do parents get paid to teach their kids now? I mean, in this taxless society that we're talking about, the need for a lot of things that we have today diminishes.
Blah blah blah. Everything you say is pure fantasy, and doesn't mean anything other than your overly romanticized notions of a world which never was, and which never could be.
Go look up aboriginals, American Indians and/or any other indigenous peoples. Also, if you think that there has always been taxes (as if they're a part of nature) then you are the one that's overly romanticizing the situation. Taxes were invented long ago, for sure, but to say that they've always been there, is wrong, and just sounds obnoxious.
If you think a modern society is possible without taxes and some things being paid for by society, you really are a drooling idiot.
This is where no one can argue, you are 100% correct. However the word "modern" is the reason. But there's no reason that we cannot have a society housing a group of people that have no "currency".
If you want to have a nice civil group of people, working to have food and shelter, this can be achieved without money. The American Indians used to live in a society where they had no money, but they were successful at trading with other tribes. Sure they fought, but there was an underlying mutual understanding that their way of life had a goal of staying in tune with Nature. "Money" is not a part of nature, otherwise all races of beings would have it, not just humans.
Well, let me start off by saying that although I do own an iPhone(4), I do not use it as a phone, and there is no sim card in it. I do not connect it to any wireless router, or anything else. Hell, I don't even carry it with me ever. I only use it for it's video capability. Originally I bought it because I thought it'd be a nice addition to my things.
However, I think that everyone is mad because something automatically was added to a list of things that they purchased, maybe I'm wrong. They're mad, not because of this event, but mad in preparation for future events. We're all meeting the reality of everyone walking around nonchalantly with a small PC slash tracking device in their pocket. If that device is also a pocket that apple gets to put it's hand in as it sees fit, then that's a bit crazy to me. But then again, I do not use the iPhone (and have not for over 3 years now) for this exact reason. Technology is no longer serving The People, it's monitoring them.
Don't forget that "googling" something only has to do with web searches. If you "youtube" something, even though it's owned by google, you're still looking up videos specifically. It's just easier to communicate when you're allowed to be non-specific. "Get in the car" is much easier to communicate than "Get in the Mazda MX-5 Miata" and we all know it. It's only assholes that require specifics in this area....and we all know it.
Not I. I'd rather the rich elite kill off all of us poor idiots that think that wisdom has meaning. That way they would have everything that they want. Then I want them to really feel that. I want their lazy, inconsiderate, reckless, venturesome, belligerent ways to only be with them, and I don't want to be here when this all goes down. Because just like anyone else that's always pointing their fingers at everyone, hating them, trying to get everyone to do things that they want, the way they want, when that person gets left alone, they are the most dissatisfied. Groups of people are like that too. A group of people that terrorize others, when left to their own ways of being, hate themselves. These people that you and I are talking about are just like planarians.
Due to the poster's usage of the past tense ("has made"), his claim cannot be explained as Gore "hopes that later laws will be voted on in a way that lands someone a lot of free money, er tax", as future laws and future windfalls wouldn't explain how he made a fortune in the past.
I see. Other than writing a book "The Future: Six Drivers of Global Change", I'm assuming that he makes his living the same way all millionaire politicians do - taking campaign contributions ($the_money) as payment for (efforts that enable) enacting laws. Sometimes this is a time-taking process, beginning with coaxing The People into a certain mindset, usually dividing The People into 2 groups. If there's anything that I've learned over the years, it's that politicians are full of shit. However if anyone is in the position to understand truly that nothing is black&white, it'd be politicians. And since that's so, when one of them goes into one direction, as was the case with Gore, with such fantastic certainty about that direction, I always suspect they're interested in $the_money. So I can't help but agree with folks like s.petry when it comes to assuming that politicians are after money.
He's peddled global warming to me quite a bit, but I don't recall ever giving him any of my money. What's his business model?
Politics is quite an art, isn't it? I think s.petry is pointing out that Gore is a politician who seems to be attempting to strike fear in as many as possible, in hopes that later laws will be voted on in a way that lands someone a lot of free money, er tax.

I'll take 'He said she said' for 500 Alex.
Seriously, why is this article having to say, "reportedly" and "allegedly" so many times, and drone on into the mockery of the Comcast agent's conversation? We all know that Comcast is shit, and there's nothing that can be done about it, other than stopping the use of their product, and/or all of comcast's employees striking - and no one's willing to do that (for some reason). I guess it's just Monday at slashdot?
You got modded funny - not sure why. Anyone ever heard the name "Ferguson" before a bunch of black folks decided to, as you say, "play back"? Until white folks learn to be "disobedient with good intent", they'll be slaves to richer white folks.
All what accidental deaths? The number is tiny - less than 100 a year. That number is also dropping monotonically every year, and has done so since the 1930s.
You're right, and that's good. However this is usually at the expense of the fathers that keep the guns in a safe, or high in the closet, or some other hard-to-get-to location. When you need your gun because someone's breaking in, who's got time to open a safe?
I think that one important thing that this will help end is children, showing each other their dad's cool gun(s), accidentally shooting each other. Or worse, taking the gun to school. I'm all about some guns, I own many. But I also have kids. I keep my guns in a place that keeps my kids safe, but will cost me a few extra seconds to retrieve, in the event of a break-in or something. This would allow me to keep those guns in a "faster" location.
Good point. To often people who believe that life has some 'ultimate backdrop with their favorite color' (religion), and they expect that whatever you say is you describing what you think the backdrop is (this is how most/all religious conversations go). Atheists are pointing out that there is no backdrop, and religious people are forced to straw man the conflict, as that's all religion, by nature, can do.
It's not that we're all shoulder-shrugging, because we're stupid. We're shoulder-shrugging because we're all terrified of our government. The American government has gained the ability to deem things terrorism, regardless of any logic supported by the written laws that founded the country, and that were created in order to keep government from becoming a power, rather than a service.
In America you can sell cigarettes and whiskey, but in most states if you are caught selling raw milk, your house can be raided by the military - guns in your (and your kids') face at 5:30am. We're all shrugging because we don't understand what the fuck is going on, or why. There is no answer, because there is no proper question, other than "Huh?"
So, the earth is divided into many countries. Why not just go ahead and assume that all rocks in space (the Earth is a rock in space too) are to be split up as they are on Earth? The whole idea of ownership in this way is to silly to come up with a plan in one day, given our current laws, as those laws weren't gotten in one day either. It'll take many years before anything will become of this. We haven't even gotten to the part where some religious stance claims that God sent the rock here for some Heaven's Gate shit - making it holy ground.
I should also point out that if you are allowing for an hour of your time to give to these assholes, then what makes you think that eventually they'll start to get funding from viagra, and while they have you on the phone, and you're all "bla bla bla" about how stupid you are (pretending to be), why not take that time to toss in some viagra information for you to listen to? The faults with your logic are as flawed as they can be. Hang up, don't waste your time - it's not war unless you allow it to be. Also, get in touch with your family and let them know, if you care about them. If you don't care about them, then let these scammers have their fun, what do you care?
That only works if everyone in the world calls their mother, father, aunt, grandma, etc, which is obviously never going to happen.
Why not? I can't imagine being more backwards than feeling more like staying on the phone with a scammer for an hour, than your own family for 2 minutes.
Quite honestly, some people here wouldn't know what a BB is.
...but they know what a "BB gun pellet" is?
Just havin a laugh mate. Cheers!

Anyone that does freelance IT work knows that this means $$$. Hell I'm still counting the money from WinXP's death. Yehaa!
...a BB gun pellet...
Typical scientist. Explain away all these "hard-to-understand" principals, but totally crash on a simple analogy. ;)
I'm assuming that you meant "BB".

Yup. Now "websites" will be more like "channels", just like the old days on the old TV. Basically, we're all waiting for YouTube.com to be paywalled.
but at least the government is somewhat answerable to the people.
Citation please.

The appropriate product is called the "GunVault". It can be opened in a second or so, in the dark, entirely by touch.
I never heard of such, but decided to look it up (found here). Turns out these things are quite affordable, and may be exactly what I need. Thanks!
