This is a hack in the most classic sence of the word. If I had thought of this and thought I could get MTV to produce my own production I'd have jumped on it in a heartbeat, the only thing I'm angry about it that I didn't think of it first. Obviously his vision didn't come across and that's probably why the tone is so apologetic, it was something of a failure but I love the concept, reality hacking is the best:) I produce video and it's frustrating, any independent film maker will tell you that starting out, you lie, cheat and steal to get the actors, props, editing equipment, you'll spend hours playing rope a dope with police sending them back and forth between people who "have the permit" and try and get your shot in one take before they kick you out. This was almost slick:)
It really isn't a huge investment in time to learn esperanto. I used to work at a bar/gallery called cafe esperanto (isn't that just sooo cosmopolitan, it was a job, sue me:) One of the requirements for the job was fluency in esparanto, i'm not sure why, i never took one drink order in esperanto, never heard esperanto spoken by anyone the whole 6 months i worked there. Before I applied I picked up an esperanto book, 6 weeks later I interviewed in esperanto. I can't say everyone's experience would be that simple, I came at it with a decent foundation of latin and a good knowledge of greek roots. That seemed to help. Point is, nobody wanted to use it, no one needed to, everyone spoke english. The bar actually had a decent percentage of non-natives, but english has become the second language of choice. If you want to argue this on slashdot do it in another language than english. You wouldn't get much responce, huh?
God, I feel him on being disappointed with OS X. The first code I ever compiled was objC. I've gotten used to it, but no other platform/os I've worked was as simple and elegant. The UI was beautiful. Of all the 20 or so people I know who used NeXT, one of them is excited about OS X and is planning on developing for it. I don't understand where apple is going, what would have been wrong with supporting NeXT as a development platform, or even opening up parts of it to open source. Oh yeah, that was rhapsody...I got the rhapsody developer kit in my email one day. I really can't decide if I'm more pissed at mac users that were just terrified by the thought of losing that stupid smiley face and their windowshades and their GODAWFUL memory management, and....(do I sound bitter?), or Apple for listening to them and watering down rhapsody into rhapsody II then watering it down to OS X.
there was 120 waaaaay before alternative nation, this asshole with a fake british accent hosted it, ohhh Dave Kendal:) I know 120 was around along time before i started watching it, he may not even have been the first host
I hate the fallout from the brooklyn museum, but in a way the curators deserved what happened. I've recieved grants that were partialy funded by the NEA, and some of my subject matter I'm sure would have made Jesse Helms jet green flame out of his ass, but looking at the decisions the curators made, i can't see them as free speech heroes.
Religion and Art have been intertwined since both of them began, and even though I personally see nothing in the works in questions but some moderate art ability coupled with sensationalistic content to grab attention, I would defend funding for it. The funny thing is the artist didn't recieve any public funds, but the fallout from this has brought back the same tired jabs at the NEA. This is a Bad Thing for the art community, brought about by some half-assed jerk who was grabing for his 15 minutes of fame the easy way. Here's the real problem I have with the museums self righteous defence. Everyone involved in the decisions over the content of the show was Jewish. Last year an exibit was thrown out that had defaced stars of david and swastikas. It was considered anti-semetic. In all fairness in an age of political correctness, where anything with tinges of anti-semitism is viewed on a backdrop of the holocost it's possible that the curators completely forgot the fact that judaism is a religion. It still begs the question why did two jews give a big stamp of approval for a series of anti-catholic pieces and the boot to the anti-judaism exibit. This whole controversy is a blow to free speech, race relations, it makes me ill to think about it. The true anti-semites got a PR boost, the folks who try and kill the miserable dribble of money that the federal government contributes to art are having revival, black, black times for the arts.
I don't think they broadcast the tortures and executions on chechen stations, but i do know someone sent video to the russian government of someone executing and torturing russians and westerners. They claimed to be the chechen resistance, I dont see any reason to second guess them. I've seen some of the footage, it's grisly stuff. You'd think if they didn't send the video someone would have said something by now. I'm not going to wade off into regional politics that i have a half-baked understanding of, but I think it's sad that wars over ethnic and religious hatred are still occurring as 2000 approaches.
Maybe this is nit-picking but I've never understood the phrase judeo/christian. The two religions share 5 books together and the torah can't even truely be said to be part of the hebrew religion, judaism as it exists today is the product of millenia of change, adaptation, i.e. the neccesity of sacrafice depending on the availability of a temple and the occasional enslavement of the populace. True they share certain value's but that doesn't mean they are so monolithicaly similar that you can lump the two together in a hyphenated word. Most religions share basic values that are fairly common sence. This is why these religions have stood the test of time. Subvert anger by forgiveness. Jainism. Samanasuttam 136 The best deed of a great man is to forgive and forget. Islam (Shiite). Nahjul Balagha, Saying 201 Where there is forgiveness, there is G-d Himself. Sikhism. Adi Granth, Shalok, Kabir, pg. 1372 If you efface and overlook and forgive, then lo! G-d is forgiving, merciful. Islam. Qur'an 64.14 The superior man tends to forgive wrongs and deals leniently with crimes. Confucianism. I Ching 40: Release If you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Christianity. Matthew 5.23-24 The Day of Atonement atones for sins against G-d, not for sins against man, unless the injured person has been appeased. Judaism. Mishnah, Yoma 8.9 Show endurance in humiliation and bear no grudge. Taoism. Treatise on Response and Retribution Because all these religions can agree on the wisdom of forgiveness should we give lip service to the judeo/christian/taoist/confucian/jainist/shiite/is lamic tradition? P.S. I worship a god named lah-lah, and he thinks your all full of shit
This is probably off topic but why do most of the distro's configure eth0 for defaultroute on the routing table? When I get a call asking for ppp help 9 times out of 10 it comes down to that. Is there some advantage to having eth0 as defaultroute i'm not aware of?
I can't believe that slashdot can't manage to have a rational disscusion about race. It's nearly a new millenium and the people I like to think of as the best and brightest couldn't raise the level of discussion above "Some of my best friends are black people" and "You can be a nigger without being black". I really couldn't care less who owns nigger.com. I hope the naacp does something funny with it, makes like a redneck parady site or something. What concerns me is that people in here vascilate between acting too horrified and shocked at the word nigger that they have to censor it, or you have that charming guy with the "damn spooks" thread that kept getting moderated up and down and his people. Is it impossible to find a sane middle ground? One thing i'll agree with the above mentioned post on is the revision of history, in some wierd effort to atone for the past historians have painted the civil war and reconstruction into this grand strugle for human rights with lincoln it's saintly leader. The truth is alot more complicated and it's not easy to research, read the full text of lincoln's speechs for a start on him. What I won't agree with are these blanket indictments against racial groups. It's not my fault if someone gets tied to a bumper and gets dragged to death, it's not everyone the same color as the guy who mugged you's fault when that happens. Can't we all just get along? I have a bridge where i used to have teeth because nazi's tried to recruit from the local punks and we banded up and told them to leave town. We all had to travel in packs for a summer. At the end their house burned down, and they decided it wasn't real safe to stay. I'm still an active member of the anti-racist action committee. Nazi's and the kkk aren't stopped because the naacp bought nigger.com, they're stopped by people with baseball bats, guns, and knives.
Actually there are sulfur based life forms on earth that live around hot smokers at obscene depths on the ocean floor. They're tubeworms and clams and such so it doesn't say much about whether you could have a sulfur based skeletal system. One thing it does say though, is life can exist in places extremely inhospitable from our point of view
Actually the study was flawed, when those findings were presented subsequent studies found the percentage of xxy or other chromosomal syndromes to be no different in the prison population than in the normal population. The prison study happened to be the first wide scale experiment and the results were far off what was expected so they interpreted the data as showing xxy individuals as potential criminals. I sort of think that was the result they were looking for when they conducted the research, they found the result they were looking for. The only thing certain about xxy is that a minority of individuals with the chromosome abberation develop klienfelter syndrome, not directly as a result of the defect but because of lower testosterone levels.. I'm trying to find something to back this up, I heard about the study from my ex the other day, it was something she brought back from her genetics class
At one time i worked for a very horrible place that happens to make yearbooks for most of the elementary and middle schools in the U.S. (if you have any idea what i'm talking about it wasn't Josten's it's the other one) When I started it was an assembly line arrangement where an image aquisition team scanned and named all the pictures and a quark team filled in the blanks on a template. Eventually that was inefficient so a plotting team took over and code warrior scripts were used to build books, place images, do everything but tweak the thing into final submission When I left there was a project to get rid of the final human element which was designing the covers for these books. The script would match the school mascot randomly pick between fractal and other backgrounds, try and make a guess as to whether it was a religious school ie. if it saw st. anything it would drop some crosses and sacred hearts. They didn't have an astounding success rate and the amount of time you spent letting the maching do it then re-doing the job yourself 75% of the time made it unworthwhile but everything evolves.. I don't think this is the death kneel of the ad exec but i think in the near future it's gonna clear the field quite a bit..
How much guiness do you guys have? If i can get a find the right flight out, i might be able to save money on my bar tab tonight by coming out from chicago:)
Back in October a canadian company bought started marketing tuvalu domains out to TV show's the place had like 9000 citizens, but it's already got a UN charter. I'm not sure who you'd make the check out to, but that would cover physical land pretty effectively. If that country had a couple million ex-patriate citizens with billions of dollars in tuvalu banks other countries would be happy to work with it's citizens. Actually I thought the chest thumping on US citizenship was funny, one of my best friends was teaching English in Beijing when Tianamin Square came down, the europeans she was there with had been alerted, put on planes and were the hell out of there a week before the crackdown, the Americans couldn't get any help from the US embassy. I don't see why this couldn't work a nation comprised of geeks IS a superpower in the information age.
I could use that 100 shares personally, i think i'd have gotten an invite if i hadn't sacked my old email address', and errr other people in brown shoes got angry at the person that owned them:)
Yes, Adobe has the power to blow the OS market open, to their great advantage. And still they sit, and sit, and worry about Apple. *snip* Adobe's market isn't the home user, it's the printing industry and to a much greater extent the publishing industry. I think you'd have a hard time trying to get purup-magnum (or whatever the hell they are after that last round of buy outs) to port out drivers and configuration software to BeOS, imagesetters, plotters, high end drum scanners, it's a specialized field and it's been apple's last bastion for along time. BeOS isn't even in those people's vocabulary's. Then again what the hell could it hurt adobe to get a little crew together and port it out to Be. Guess it couldn't hurt, but far more end-users would pirate the software, than in the business world..
I wish I had a little time to go look up my references, but in a study on truth in reporting that took in a wide scope of publications that spanned 3 years believe it or not the top of the journalistic field for getting their facts straight was the national enquirer. I know it sounds odd but since they got the ass sued out of them in the early 80's they have a brutal fact checking department. New York Times actually scored pretty poorly If i get the time I'll look up the study, I have no idea if this information is on the web but I'll poke around for it. As an aside point, just maybe those holier than thou publications like JAMA should be subjected some scrutiny. Just maybe alot of good science is being flushed down the toilet by "peer review"
I get less and less comfortable with the way the way the kid's who commited this act are being marginalized in the media as psychotic, random, killers acting out. I watched all that unfold on CNN and over and over again i heard the students being interviewed describe them as "social outcasts" and over and over it was brought up that they didn't participate in school activities like that was something that made them pariah. Maybe it's just because i wen't to a white slum high school who's best credentials were mangaging to score the highest student pregnancy rate in the nation while i attended and having the most losing record of any high school football team in the state but i don't remember things being that heirarchal. I really thought that was something people had made up to sell "the breakfast club" and "heathers" I have an aquaintance on irc that lived a few blocks from the high school and knew the kids that did the shooting, he said that from the day they started school they were beaten and ridiculed relentlessly an example he threw out was that one of them was held down and given an enema. If i had went through something like that, i could easily understand wanting to hurt people. Maybe i'm out of touch, maybe thats just the structure most people live in and that it's shocking that someone on the bottom of a social pyramid would object to being beaten, ridiculed and sexually violated. I'm sure most of what they did was horrible misplaced aggression, but i'm starting to feel that some of it may have been right on target if massively excessive. There's a point where the human mind snaps and it sounds like they might have been pushed passed it. It's also possible that the depiction of their treatment i got from a third party is inaccurate or misleading, but i know that my sympathy quotient for that school took a nose dive.
